SwediSh CompanieS in BangladeSh
It is our great pleasure to present the first ever Sweden-Bangladesh Business Guide. Bangladesh is the world’s eighth largest country and it is undergoing a rapid modernization, social development and economic growth. With the Government’s Vision 2021 plan, Bangladesh will accelerate its growth and is likely to reach the middle income country status within a few years.
Bangladesh’s 160 million inhabitants, with more than 30 million in the middle class segment have seen growth rates above 6% annually for the last decade. Through a demonstration of tremendous hard work, the country has transformed itself into being competitive in a number of sectors. The medium and long term potential of this market should not be underestimated.
There is a potential for stronger commercial relations between Sweden and Bangladesh. The positive image of Sweden in Bangladesh contributes to promoting Swedish export industries, for example in clean energy, environment, transport, high-end technology and health. There are good opportunities for Swedish companies to further explore production, purchasing or investment in the fields of textiles, readymade garments, leather, pharmaceuticals and other industrial areas.
Many Swedish companies are already present in Bangladesh since several years and they contribute to modernization and development. There are significant opportunities for both new and old companies in Sweden and Bangladesh in the areas of trade and investment between the two countries. We hope that this guide will be of help.

THE SWEDISH SOCIETY AND ECONOMY
Sweden is consistently ranked as one of the most competitive economies in the world by the World Economic Forum. It is known for its rich natural resources, innovations, high-tech companies and caring society. Freedom of expression, gender equality, a deregulated economy and reformed central government finance combined with an efficient welfare and social security system have contributed to the social and economic development.
In an international comparison, Sweden is very open to international trade and investments. Exports account for almost half of Sweden’s GDP, consisting largely of manufactured goods such as vehicles, machinery, pharmaceuticals and forest industry products. Trade in services is large and growing, especially in areas of business services, travel and transportation.
Export to Asia is increasingly important for Swedish companies, even larger than the North and South American markets combined. Imports to Sweden from Asia have also grown over the years.
Sweden is a world leading research nation. As an advanced industrial country, research plays a key role for economic development as well as for society at large. Innovation and co-creation are important for tackling major challenges. Today, Sweden ranks as one of the most innovative countries in the world.
Sweden has a long history of international commitment to pursuing active global cooperation on sustainable development. Sweden is now in the forefront of developing new environmental technologies and sustainable system solutions. This includes renewable energy, green buildings, waste management, air and water treatment, sustainable fuels and battery-driven vehicles. Swedish industries are in particular innovative also when it comes to life science, IT/telecom, automotive industry, mining and pulp and paper.
Sweden is a strong player in the cultural and creative industries. These industries play an increasingly important role in the growth of the Swedish economy and

are driving forces for innovation in other sectors of society and industry as well. Creative industries include professionals and entrepreneurs within fashion and design, film, communication, literature and music, performing arts, computer games and gastronomy.
Swedish citizens are encouraged to take the chance and start new businesses, which is one of the key factors to the development of many successful Swedish companies. According to the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) 2014, the numbers of entrepreneurs in Sweden have doubled since 2006.
SWEDEN BANGLADESH BUSINESS RELATIONS
The commercial links between Sweden and Bangladesh trace back more than a hundred years, when the East Bengal market was covered from Swedish companies’ offices in Kolkata.
Swedish development cooperation with Bangladesh began soon after the country’s independence in 1971 and has exceeded US$ 1,7 billion since then. The cooperation is focused on the areas of health in particular sexual and reproductive health and rights, inclusive economic growth focusing on employment, skills development and industrial relations, human rights and democratic governance, primary education, urban environment and climate change. Sweden is working closely both with the Government of Bangladesh and with international and national development partners in the country.
In 2014, the Swedish Government adopted a new development cooperation strategy with Bangladesh for the period 2014-2020. It provides for a total development envelope of US$ 0.18 billion. Its overall aim is to contribute to improving the conditions for people to raise themselves out of poverty, strengthening democracy, respect for human rights and gender equality, and to contribute to sustainable development.
Trade has grown impressively over the years. The overall character of the bilateral relations changes as the relative importance of development cooperation decreases and trade and investment expand. There are already more than 50 Swedish companies represented in Bangladesh.
Telecommunication equipment and various kinds of machinery are the most important export products to Bangladesh. Other engineering products, paper, wood, ore, iron, steel and chemical products are also important.
The most important export items from Bangladesh to Sweden are clothes and textiles. Most Swedish fashion brands have found Bangladesh to be a competitive sourcing market and the market is growing.
