Massacre at Munich

Who?

• Olympic athletes, coaches and referees from the national Israeli team were taken hostage and murdered at the 1972 summer Olympics.

• Murdered by a Palestinian terrorist group called Black September.

The Victims

What took place

• Black September killed eleven Israeli athletes and officials and one German police guard.

• They stormed into the lightly guarded athletes apartment in track suits and masks. They were holding duffel bags filled with AK-47 rifles.

• They left with only 9 hostages after killing one resisting Israeli, Yossef Romano.

Did all of the hostages die?

• Not at the hands of the terrorists.

• After bound up on the air strip, in the confusion of gun fire the remaining five athletes were shot by German police.

• The Helicopter exploded.

• The terrorists killed all that were left after explosion.

What did the want?

• The terrorists demanded in turn for the athletes lives the safe passage to Egypt of 234 Palestinians and non-Arabs jailed in Israel.

• Two German terrorists that had been captured and were being held.

How did it come to this?

• After WWII, the persecuted Jews needed a land to inhabit. They held the belief of Zionism.

• Unfortunately, this was the current home of many Palestinians.

• Now the Palestinians, who had been relocated from their homes were upset.

Black September

• Formed after relocation of Jews to Palestine

• Military rule of King Hussein resulted in the deaths or expulsion of thousands of Palestinians from Jordan

• Determined to take revenge on King Hussein and the Jordanian army.

1917

British gov. states that they favor a Natl. home for Jews in Palestine

1936

The first Olympics are held in Berlin. Presided over by Adolph Hitler

1970

Black September is founded by angry Fatah men who wanted revenge on King Hussein's military rule

1972

Olympics held in Munich to erase old hurts from Hitler's Regime. Massacre at Munich.

1973

Israel launched the Operation Spring of Youth. Their main targets were the heads and masterminds of Black September
