Parkette’s History When Joe Smiley opened the Parkette on November 11, 1951, he had a dream. He was a pioneer and a visionary in the restaurant industry. Joe created his own version of the double-decker hamburger called the “Poor Boy”. Joe brought this burger idea with him from West Virginia. He named it after the lifestyle he saw there at that time. Joe said “When the coal strikes were on, every body was starving”. When Joe came to Lexington, he said “Lord God, this town’s wide open for a drive-in”. When Parkette was built, it was surrounded by nothing but dirt roads. His first night open, there was a rain storm and Joe was afraid the customers would get stuck in the mud, so he hired a tow truck driver to help folks get in and out. Joe believed that good food at a good price would bring folks in. We agree! We still use fresh ground beef and fresh chicken (and we’re still using Joe’s original famous fried chicken recipe). The famous Parkette sign was built in 1957 and is a symbol of Lexington. It stands as a monument overlooking New Circle Road. The Parkette sign has moving cars, moving arrows and a Car Hop that stands over New Circle, ready to serve all who pass by. The sign itself is a landmark and a point of reference for this section of the city. Our Story Jeff and Randy Kaplan are the Co-Owners of the Parkette Drive-In Restaurant (2008). Jeff has been a Subway franchisee, here in Lexington, since 1992. Jeff and his wife Carol came to Lexington from Tampa, Florida where they met in college at the University of South Florida. It was in Tampa that Jeff and Carol first discovered Subway. As a Subway customer himself, Jeff saw the potential for success that Subway restaurants could have and he wanted to be a part of it. Jeff’s entrepreneurial spirit took over and he and Carol decided to come to Lexington to be with family and to open their first Subway franchise. Jeff and Carol have grown their company and now own several Subway locations here in Lexington. Randy first came to Kentucky in 1983, graduating from Eastern Kentucky University with a Law Enforcement Degree in 1984. After 2 ½ years on the Atlanta Police Department, Randy missed the Bluegrass and returned, to join the Lexington Police Department in 1986. Upon retiring from the Lexington Police Department in 2005, Randy worked for the Fayette County Attorney’s Office, a short period of time. Jeff recruited Randy to join his Subway team, in order to build a Marketing, Catering & Security Division for his Subway stores (which they still have today). Randy could not turn down an opportunity to work with his brother, so he accepted the challenge. After working together for the past few years, “we discovered that we complimented each other so well, that we wanted to partner up on an independent project together” (with Jeff still keeping Subway, of course). Jeff and Randy decided to purchase Parkette (2008) and return it to its glory days. We could not let this Lexington landmark and icon be destroyed (it had closed in 2007). It took more than 8 months to renovate the entire restaurant, including the kitchen area, and a total transformation in the dining room. We knew that Lexington needed the Parkette to look and feel like the “good ol’ days”. A place where families can go to feel good. A place for great food, with great service and a great atmosphere. We also felt it was equally important to keep the car bays with the call boxes, along with our Car Hops, in order to maintain the tradition of the Parkette. We also felt it was important to continue with the Hot Rod and Car Club shows as well. We hope you agree. It is our pleasure to bring that to you. We feel that it is an honor to re-open the Parkette for the city of Lexington, and for the nostalgia and Drive-In lovers everywhere. Welcome to the ParketteWe’d like to thank you for coming in to visit us today. And we’d like to:

Welcome You Back To The Good Times.

The Parkette is part of Lexington history and we are proud to be a part of it. The Parkette is known all over the Country and we are very excited to be able

to bring it back to its glory days.

Making HistorySince re-opening in March 2009, Parkette has continued to make

history in Lexington.

On August 10, 2009, Lexington Mayor Jim Newberry issued a Proclamation declaring August 10th Parkette Day. Vice-Mayor Jim Gray presented Parkette

with a plaque at our Grand Re-Opening ceremony.

Parkette was featured on the Food Network’s Diner’s, Drive-In’s & Dives, featuring Guy Fieri.

Our episode aired on September 20, 2010. This was a great honor for Parkette and Lexington.

This feature put us on the International map!

Parkette was featured in two publications during the World Equestrian Games at the Kentucky Horse Park (October 2010).

This was a once in a lifetime event.

Since re-opening, Parkette has been featured on Television News and Cable, in the Lexington Herald-Leader, Local Radio,

Business Lexington Magazine, www.visitsouth.com, Tops In Lex Magazine, Southsider Magazine, a Chevrolet

Commercial, Lane Reports Prep Magazine, Kentucky Monthly Magazine and many other features across Kentucky.

We’ve launched a series of TV Commercials on Insight Cable. We also launched a Web Site, Facebook Site and a Twitter Site.

And we’ve only just begun!

Parkette’s HistoryWhen Joe Smiley opened the Parkette on November 11, 1951, he had a

dream.

His first night open, there was a rain storm and Joe was afraid the

Joe believed that good food at a good price would bring folks in. We agree! We still use fresh ground beef and fresh chicken (and we’re still using Joe’s

original famous fried chicken recipe).

The famous Parkette sign was built in 1957 and is a symbol of Lexington. It stands as a monument overlooking New Circle Road. The Parkette sign has

moving cars, moving arrows and a Car Hop that stands over New Circle, ready to serve all who pass by. The sign itself is a landmark and a
