Jenny Hester, Assistant Principal Chuck Wolfram, Student Services Coordinator

Dear Students and Parents, On behalf of the faculty and staff of South Warren High School, I want to welcome you to another exciting school year. As we move forward, we hope to have fewer growing pains, so we may focus on developing the Spartan tradition that will carry on for generations to come. Opening SWHS last year was both challenging and rewarding. The most pleasant aspect of being a part of this was getting to know such outstanding students and parents and the community members that surround South Warren. We want to build on these relationships so together we can be committed to establishing one of the premier high schools in Kentucky because we are dedicated to delivering academic excellence and preparing our students for their future endeavors, including their post-secondary plans. I am extremely grateful for the support and confidence you have shown in South Warren High School. I encourage you to continue being involved and supporting your students in their endeavors. With all of us working together, it is my belief that the coming year will be one of excellence for both you and our school. Sincerely,

Terry M. Cook

ACADEMIC INFORMATION Grading Policy

A syllabus will be distributed to students at the beginning of each course.

Teachers will explain the grading system in each class and describe their policies in regard to cheating, homework, and make-up work.

Grading Scale

The following grading scale will be used in all regular classes: A = 90-100 B = 80-89 C = 70-79 D = 60-69 F = 0-59

Grade Point Average Calculation

All regular (non-Advanced Placement “AP”) classes are calculated on a 4.0 scale: A = 4.0 points B = 3.0 points C = 2.0 points D = 1.0 points F = 0 points

AP classes are calculated on a 5.0 scale to take into account the degree of difficulty of this level of class:

A = 5.0 points B = 4.0 points C = 3.0 points D = 2.0 points F = 0 points

Both methods of grade point calculation will be used in determining GPA and class rankings. Grade Reporting

Teachers are expected to report grades in a timely manner and communicate with parents of struggling students.

Students and parents can access grades via the parent portal within the Infinite Campus website <infinitecampus.warren.kyschools.us/campus/portal/warren.jsp>.

Students will receive quarterly grade handouts. Grade reports will be mailed at the end of the first semester, and grade reports may be picked up at the school at the end of the school year.

Credit Distinctions

Credits required for grade placement are as follows: Sophomores = 6 credits Juniors = 12 credits Seniors = 18 credits Graduation = 24 credits

Contact the Guidance Office for 2012 graduation requirements.

6

Graduation Requirements

Two levels of diplomas are offered: Academic and Scholastic. Each has specific requirements, which may be found in the Appendix.

Completion of a writing portfolio above novice is required for graduation from Warren County Schools.

Completion of the ILP is required for graduation from Warren County Schools. Exit Exams

Exit exams will be required in four core classes: Algebra II, English II, U.S. History, and Biology I.

The exams will be given at the end of the school year and will count for 10% of the year average. Credit Recovery/Summer School

Students who fail to complete requirements for coursework may have the opportunity to recover credit through summer school or Novel Star.

The Guidance Office will monitor these programs and notify students/parents when credits are in need of recovery.

Homework

The homework policy for each course will be provided by the teacher of that subject in the class syllabus at the beginning of each course.

Teachers determine the frequency and value of each homework assignment.

Students are expected to complete all assignments deemed necessary by the teacher in a timely manner.

Cheating/Plagiarism

Cheating and plagiarism are serious offenses! Teachers will define their respective cheating policies in the course syllabus and will discipline according to their policies.

Plagiarism occurs when students take ideas or words from another and present or claim them as their own.

Plagiarism includes using work from a source (e.g. the Internet, an encyclopedia, a textbook, any other published or unpublished work, or an oral interview) without proper citation or reference.

Plagiarism includes the unauthorized use of images, music, and video that are not original creations; these must also be cited to avoid copyright infringement.

GENERAL INFORMATION Accident Reports for Student Injury

An accident report form must be filled out immediately following injury of a student.

The student’s teacher, coach, supervisor, or first-aid designee shall obtain a report form from the office.

Athletics

A wide variety of sports are offered at South Warren High School. Students are encouraged to participate in these school sponsored teams, which include cross country, football, basketball, volleyball, soccer, softball, cheerleading, baseball, golf, swimming and diving, tennis, and track and field.

Students must adhere to all KHSAA rules to participate. These rules include a required yearly physical and a minimum number of credits per year.

For students to be eligible, the KHSAA and South Warren High School require students to be successfully passing a percentage of classes during the season of play for each particular sport. Refer to bylaws on <KHSAA.org> for more information.

Tryouts, open gym, and practices will be announced well in advance of each season.

The Spartan athletic teams represent our school; therefore, South Warren High School encourages all students to support them.

Student athletes will receive an athletics handbook explaining policies specific to SWHS athletics. Cafeteria

The school food service is a vital part of the overall health program of the school day. Breakfast - $1.15 Lunch - $2.00 Visitor Lunch - $3.25

Students should practice good hygiene in the cafeteria by washing their hands before eating, cleaning their areas after finishing by placing all food and condiments on trays and emptying the remains in the proper area, and returning trays to the tray drop area.

Neither food nor open containers are to be taken from the cafeteria.

Food allergies are a serious issue for some students. Do not share personal pre-prepared food with others. Products containing peanut oil and materials with latex are particularly troublesome to students with certain allergies. Refer to the Safe Schools policies if you have any questions on this issue.

Students are expected to obey all school rules and cooperate with cafeteria staff, monitors, and other students during their lunch periods. Loud talking, physical contact with other students, and general horseplay will not be tolerated!

Students serving lunch detention must follow administrators’ orders. Other students should not associate with students serving lunchroom detention.

Lockers

Each student will be assigned a locker that he/she must keep with an embedded lock.

If there are any maintenance problems, contact the office.

Students are prohibited from sharing lockers.

Please keep lockers neat and clean. Avoid placing food, gum, and other unnecessary items in the lockers.

Lockers are school property and are subject to be searched or inspected periodically without notice, a search warrant, or student/parent consent. For further information, please refer to Warren County Board of Education policy.

Parking/Driving Privileges

Driving to school is a privilege for those qualified by law who have a valid driver’s license, automobile insurance, purchase a $5.00 parking permit from the main office, and obey all SWHS parking lot regulations.

Student drivers will sign a contract upon purchasing a parking permit agreeing to abide by all SWHS parking regulations.

A student who obtain his/her driver’s license throughout the school year must purchase a parking permit and sign the student driver contract before using the student parking lot.

The parking pass should be clearly visible on the rearview mirror. Failure to display a parking pass properly at all times while in the student parking area will result in a $10 fine.

Tickets and fines will be issued if students fail to meet parking lot regulations. Fines must be paid within one week or drivers will suffer a loss of privilege.

Students should enter the parking lot via the Nashville Road side entrance and proceed immediately to their numbered designated parking spaces (see map in Appendix). Students should exit the student parking lot via the Nashville Road traffic light. Students living in the Rich Pond Road vicinity will be allowed to exit behind the school but must turn right onto Rich Pond Road.

Each student must park within the boundaries of one assigned parking space. This numbered parking space must match the number on the displayed parking permit.

In accordance to state statute (KRS 59.051), the NO PASS NO DRIVE LAW, students must meet certain academic and attendance standards to maintain the privilege of driving to school. For other driver’s license regulations, see Warren County Board of Education policies.

Student drivers who accumulate more than 6 unexcused morning tardies per semester may lose their driving privileges.

Students who violate driving/parking guidelines may be prohibited from driving to and from South Warren High School.

Vehicles may be towed at owners’ expenses due to parking violations.

Upon arrival at school each morning (see map in Appendix for entrance routes), students should leave their vehicles and come immediately into the school building. Students will not be allowed to reenter their vehicles unless specific permission is given by an administrator or a valid note/excuse is provided.

Do not loiter on school property.

All school policies remain in effect while en route to and from vehicles and in the parking lot.

All cars should be locked throughout the school day. South Warren High School is not liable for any stolen articles or damage inflicted on student vehicles.

10

Textbooks

Textbooks are furnished by South Warren High School at no cost to students. Students are responsible for the condition of their textbooks and must take proper care of them.

A textbook form will be issued by each teacher. The teacher will keep record of textbooks provided. All textbooks should be returned to the issuing teacher upon completion of the designated class, dismissal from school, or in the event of transfer.

Lost or damaged textbooks will result in an assessed fee based upon the percentage replacement cost. Report cards and school privileges (such as driving, prom, graduation activities, etc.) may be withheld until all materials are returned or fees/fines paid.

Some courses such as dual credit or AP classes may require a student to purchase books to supplement the textbooks.

RULES AND REGULATIONS Expectations of Student Behavior

To maintain a safe and effective learning environment, students are expected to learn and obey all rules provided by South Warren High School and the Warren County Board of Education.

Student Discipline

Student disciplinary infractions at South Warren High School and all school-sponsored events will be handled according to Warren County Board of Education policy by the administration and staff on site. A chart is provided in the Appendix of this handbook that categorizes offenses and disciplinary actions.

The administration reserves the right to discipline certain student behaviors on an individual basis.

The Alternate Learning Center (ALC) will be used for in-school suspension violations. Students who are assigned to ALC will receive work from their respective teachers. Behavior problems and/or rules violations while attending ALC shall result in an out-of-school suspension or, in some cases, a referral to the Alternative to Suspension Program (ASP).

The Alternative to Suspension Program (ASP) is offered by the district as an alternative to out-of-school suspension. Students may be required to spend up to 10 days in ASP. Transportation to and from ASP is provided by the school. Class work will be sent to ASP from South Warren High School teachers.

Cafeteria Detention may be assigned for minor discipline infractions. Students assigned to cafeteria detention must report directly to the tables in the back of the cafeteria and should wait for an administrator to allow them to eat lunch.

Tuesday afternoon detention will be used for students accumulating excessive class tardies.

Teachers may assign before school or after school detention on an individual basis. Student Dress Code

Students are expected to dress in a manner which promotes a positive learning environment. Students should dress appropriately and avoid extremes in dress, cosmetics, and hairstyle.

The following guidelines are requirements for student dress during the school day:

Outer garments should be of acceptable length and completely cover the torso.

NO cleavage or midriff should show.

Shoulder straps should cover at least half of the shoulder.

Shorts and pants should be worn at waist level and should remain there during normal activity.

Shorts/skirts/dresses should extend to the fingertips while students are standing in a normal position.

Undergarments should not be visible at any time.

Extremely tight or extremely oversized clothing is prohibited.

Headgear such as hats, caps, bandanas, visors, or headdresses may not be worn unless they are necessary for health or safety purposes or cultural/religious requirements.

Pajamas or house shoes/slippers may not be worn.

12

Inappropriate symbols/pictures/advertisements on any article of clothing or the body is prohibited. This includes but is not limited to the promotion of alcohol, tobacco, or vulgarity and sexually explicit or racially inappropriate materials.

Trench coats or full-length overcoats are not to be worn during school hours.

See-through and/or cut-away style garments that expose any part of the body normally covered by dress code is prohibited.

Jewelry or chains should not be distracting or warrant health or safety problems.

Hairstyles should not be distracting or extreme.

Administrators may modify the dress code on pre-announced days.

Proper outerwear may be provided if students cannot contact someone to bring suitable clothing.

Public Displays of Affection

Intimate contact and other public displays of affection (prolonged hugs, embraces, and/or kissing) are inappropriate for an educational environment.

Students should refrain from PDA while in the school building, in the parking lot, and at athletic/extra-curricular events.

Repeated violations will be considered an act of defiance, and disciplinary measures will be taken.

Bullying/Harassment

Bullying and harassment will not be tolerated and will be subject to disciplinary measures according to Warren County Board of Education policy 9.42811.

Alcohol/Drugs

No student shall possess or use any form of alcohol or drugs or any controlled or mind altering substance on school property or in a school vehicle unless authorized by a medical doctor.

All prescription medicines and over-the-counter medicines (including but not limited to aspirin, ibuprofen, and acetaminophen) must be turned in to the office at the time of arrival to school.

Authorized personnel will dispense medication in accordance to the directions on the container.

Prescription and over-the-counter medications must be in their original containers.

Over the counter and prescription medication paperwork must be completed by a parent or guardian before school personnel can dispense. Medication paperwork can be obtained by parent or guardian in the school office.

Students may not transport medication on the school bus. Tobacco/Smoking

No student shall possess or use (including chewing, dipping, or smoking) any form of tobacco product in or about the school building, grounds, or buses. Violations shall result in disciplinary actions per Warren County Board of Education policy 4220.06.

Cell Phones/Personal Computers/Music Devices

Cell phones, other types of communication devices, and electronic gaming devices must not be handled, used, or heard during instructional time or while being instructed or under the

13

supervision of a faculty member for the purpose of academics. This includes ESS and detention. If one of these devices is seen being handled, is used in any way, is heard, or is otherwise a distraction, it will be confiscated immediately and the student will receive disciplinary action.

Students will be allowed to use cell phones in hallways, restrooms, and the cafeteria before school, between classes, and during their assigned lunches. Cell phones should not be used during class or during cafeteria detention. The privilege of using cell phones may be revoked at any time if class tardies increase school-wide. Tardies will be reviewed on a weekly basis.

Inappropriate use of cell phones, cell phone cameras, or internet on cell phones at any time will result in immediate confiscation and consequences. Additionally, cell phones must not be heard, handled or used during class.

When a cell phone is being confiscated due to a policy infraction, the phone and all components within it shall be surrendered to the staff member immediately.

Students must keep their own devices secure at all times. The school is not responsible for lost or stolen devices.

When a student violates the cell phone device policy using a borrowed device, both the handler and the owner will incur disciplinary measures in accordance to the disciplinary chart (see Appendix).

A confiscated cell phone may only be picked up by a parent or guardian of the owner of the device.

MP3 players, iPods, and other music devices are allowed before school, during lunch, and during class changes. However, these devices may only be used during class if the teacher permits. Each teacher has the authority to determine if/when these devices may be used in his/her respective classrooms.

Cell phones may NOT be used during instructional time to listen to music. Weapons

Students shall not carry, bring, use, or possess any firearm, other dangerous or deadly weapon, dangerous instrument (including knives, destructive device, or booby trap), or any look-alikes (example: toy handgun) in the school building, on the school grounds, in any vehicle, or at any school-sponsored event.

Students caught in possession of weapons will face disciplinary measures at school, which may include suspension or expulsion. Also, the state of Kentucky has made unlawful possession of a weapon on school property a felony punishable of up to 5 years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

Students are critical in helping to maintain a safe learning environment. Any student hearing of or seeing a weapon of any kind should contact a staff member immediately.

Transportation/Buses

Each student living within the South Warren High School district lines will be provided transportation via bus on a daily basis. Students are encouraged to ride the bus, but it is not mandatory, and it is a privilege that can be revoked at any time.

Bus routes and schedules are determined by the Warren County Board of Education transportation department. Questions regarding bus transportation can be answered by calling one of the following numbers:

(270) 842-8311 (270) 843-3703 (270) 842-3476

14

Buses are part of the school grounds, and students are expected to follow the same rules and procedures outlined in this handbook. Also, students who ride the bus must follow all rules and regulations provided by the transportation department in the district handbook.

Failure to adhere to the rules and procedures can result in immediate disciplinary measures, and bus riding privileges may be revoked.

Students must go directly into the school building after evacuating the bus.

Students should go directly to bus upon release from school. Car Riders

Students should be dropped off and picked up in the front of the building at the main entrance via the Nashville Road side parking lot entrance (see map in Appendix).

Car riders should exit the school grounds at the stop light on the Nashville Road side of the building (see map in Appendix).

Unauthorized Areas

Students are expected to be in their assigned areas under the supervision of an adult at all times. Disciplinary measures will be taken if any student is found in an unauthorized area.

Upon arrival at school (school doors open at 7:00 a.m.), students should proceed to the cafetorium, library, gym, or foyer area via the main entrances. Students should not be in the classroom hallways for any reason unless supervised by a staff member or approved by the administration. The bell will ring at 7:20 a.m. for students to proceed to lockers and classrooms for first period.

Students are not permitted to use the elevator unless accompanied by a staff member.

Students should not sit on railings or in/on window sills.

Students are not permitted in the auditorium or the hallways in front of or behind the auditorium without proper supervision.

Prom

Students may attend the prom provided they attend a full day of school the day before the prom (a valid excuse must be presented to the attendance clerk before 3:00 p.m. the day before prom), have fewer than 7 class tardies and are not considered truant, and have not been suspended from school.

Suspended students failing to meet school and/or board disciplinary policies will sign a contract forfeiting prom attendance.

Students will be searched upon arrival to prom, and any contraband will be confiscated.

Guests of SWHS students must be approved by SW administration and may be refused attendance/admittance at the discretion of the administrative staff.

SWHS and board policies remain in effect during the prom, and SW staff retain the same authority over students as they have during school.

Authorities will be immediately notified in cases where a violation of the law has occurred. Field Trips

Teachers are encouraged to schedule field trips and off campus trips that are educational in nature.

15

All South Warren High School and Warren County Board of Education disciplinary policies and regulations shall be in effect on all school-sponsored trips. Students who fail to abide by these policies will be disciplined upon return to school.

Students who have been suspended from school or have more than one referral to ALC will be prohibited from going on field trips. Students must also have satisfactory attendance before attending such trips and cannot be considered truant.

Students must have all teachers’ approval and be in good class standing before attending field trips.

Outside Food and Drink

Breakfast and lunch items must be eaten in the cafeteria.

Students are not allowed to bring open beverage containers into the school building.

Food days must be administrator approved.

16

ATTENDANCE POLICY Why an Attendance Procedure?

It is the law. We know students can boost their academic achievement with regular school attendance. When absences are necessary, parents are asked to call the attendance office on the day the student will be absent.

May my child provide the school with a note if I want the absence or tardy to be considered “excused”?

Yes. STUDENTS MUST BRING A NOTE, signed by a parent/guardian with an approved Warren County Schools absence listed on the note, upon their return to school. A valid doctor or dentist note will also excuse an absence for health or dental issues. All written absence excuses must be received within five (5) school days of a student’s return to school. If notes are not received within five school days, the absence(s) will be UNEXCUSED, and teachers will not be required to assign make-up work. If a child’s absence is unexcused, all assignments for that day shall receive a “zero” and will not be allowed to be made up. Upon return from an absence, students should take their note to the attendance office. Please do not ask the attendance clerk to make exceptions to the rules. She is not authorized to do so.

Is there a limit to the number of notes a parent may provide to obtain “excused” absences?

Yes. A maximum of five (5) parent/guardian notes are allowed per semester. A parent/guardian note is only valid for one day of absence/tardy. A doctor’s note will cover a health event of consecutive days. Once a student uses all their parent notes for that semester, only a third party note, document or other information requested by the school may result in excuse of the absence or tardy. Otherwise, all absences and tardies after the 5 excused ones each semester will be unexcused. Partial absent days will be added for an accumulation of whole-day absences.

What does the Warren County Board of Education consider to be an excusable absence or tardy at the high school level?

Death or severe illness in the student's immediate family;

Illness of the student;

Court appearance of the student pursuant to a warrant, subpoena, or citation;

Testing for driver's license if accompanied by parent or guardian and upon approval of Principal or designee;

Religious holidays and practices;

Participation in school-related activities approved by the Principal or designee;

Documented military leave;

One (1) day prior to departure of parent/guardian called to active military duty;

One (1) day upon the return of parent/guardian from active military duty,

Visitation for up to ten (10) days with the student’s parent, de facto custodian, or person with legal custody who, while on active military duty stationed outside of the country, is granted rest and recuperation leave,

Other valid reasons as determined by the Principal or designee, trips qualifying as educational enhancement opportunities.

17

What is Truancy? Truant defined: KRS 159.150 provides that within the previous twelve (12) months, any public school student who has been absent from school without a valid excuse for three (3) or more days, or tardy without a valid excuse for three (3) or more days is a truant.

What is Habitual Truancy?

If a student accumulates six unexcused absences, six unexcused tardies, or a combination of both equaling six, the student is considered habitually truant and court action may be taken to improve attendance. Additionally, any school student who has been reported as a truant two (2) or more times is an” habitual truant”.

What action will the school take in case of truancy?

Once a student has at least three unexcused absences/tardies, the parent/guardian will receive a letter of notification from the school. If a student reaches at least five unexcused/absences, a school official will meet with them at school. Students reaching the status of habitual truant, six absences/tardies, can expect to receive a home visit from a school official. Continued absences and/or tardies after the home visit will be cause for the school to file a petition with the courts alleging the student is habitually truant.

Can my child’s college visit be excused?

During their senior year students may make up to two college visits that will be considered an excused absence. The visit must be made to an appropriate institution such as a college, university, junior college, vocational or technical school. Prior permission from the guidance office, along with written confirmation from the college will be required before the visit. It must be a scheduled campus visit with the school’s admissions office. Upon returning to school, students must present documentation from the school visited to the attendance office.

What is the procedure for early dismissal?

Parents/guardians wanting to pick up students during the school day should go to the attendance office and sign the log with student name and reason for dismissal. The school is responsible for the safety of each student, therefore, parents (or any other adult picking up a student) must show identification before students can be released AND must be listed on the DISMISSAL & EMERGENCY CARD which is maintained by the school. It is the parent’s/guardian’s responsibility to make sure the DISMISSAL & EMERGENCY CARD information is current. Before a student will be permitted to leave with anyone on the emergency card, the parent or guardian must be contacted by front office staff.

Following the steps below can save time for parents, students, and staff members:

If a student needs to leave for an appointment during the school day, s/he should take the note to the attendance office upon arrival at school.

The attendance clerk will call to verify permission from the parent. This call will be made regardless of the student’s age.

The attendance office will phone the teacher to dismiss the student.

The student is to report to the attendance office to officially sign out.

Students will need to bring in any excuse notes from doctor, dentist, court, etc. within five (5) days to have the absence excused.

18

When the parent/guardian signs the student out, a written excuse may still be required to excuse the absence.

May my child makeup assignments missed because of absence from school?

It is the responsibility of each student who misses school to acquire his/her missed assignments from the teachers. This should be done upon the student’s return to school, even if the missed classes are not meeting that day. If the student misses two or more consecutive days, the parent may call the Counseling Office or check the teacher’s website for the student’s homework and or assignments. Due dates will be determined by the teacher. When a student knows of an exam before an absence, s/he should be prepared to take the exam upon returning to school.

What should my child do if he/she becomes ill at school?

Your child should notify his/her teacher and then ask the front office staff to contact parent/guardian.

If it is determined the child will leave school due to illness, the child will be dismissed out of class once the parent/guardian or other person listed on the DISMISSAL & EMERGENCY CARD arrives to get your child.

Your child must be signed out through the attendance office. If a parent checks a student out is a note is still required?

Yes Can my student take medication at school?

School personnel are NOT permitted to dispense any medicine (including pain relievers) without a doctor’s note. Parents/guardians must register medications with the office to be dispensed to students. Front office staff will follow guidelines as outlined in the Medical Administration training when dispensing over-the-counter and prescription drugs.
