both 2009 and ‘10. Laura Gorinski then competed in a trio of individual events at the NCAA Championship when she did so in the 2012 edition of the meet.

In addition to the team’s success in the water, the program under Morrison has been regularly recognized as an Academic All-America Team by the College Swimming Coaches Association of America and has accounted for 86 placings on the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll over the last 10 seasons. These recipients include Kelly Zahalka, Gorinski and Ellen Bradford, all of whom have been selected as the Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year for their sport.

Morrison’s hiring in 2004 returned him to The Yard where he served as an assistant coach to Dick Purdy for four seasons beginning in the fall of 1993. The Purdy-Morrison duo coached the Mids to a 33-14 record and to league titles during each of its four years together.

After leaving Navy following the 1996-97 school year, Morrison served as a volunteer assistant men’s coach at Tennessee during the 1997-98 season in which the Volunteers placed fourth at the NCAA Championship, followed by one year as an assistant at Rutgers. After serving as the head coach and aquatics director at the Ocean County YMCA in his hometown of Toms River, N.J., for two years starting in 1999, he was named as the head swimming coach at Lehigh in 2001. Morrison coached the Mountain Hawks to a combined 31-27 record during his three seasons in Bethlehem, a period highlighted by the men’s team winning the 2002 Patriot League title.

A successful athlete in his own right, Morrison earned four letters in swimming and in golf while a student-athlete at Toms River High School and was selected as a member of the school’s inaugural Hall of Fame class in the spring of 2004. He would go on to earn four letters in swimming at North Carolina, helping the Tar Heels win a pair of Atlantic Coast Conference titles in the process.

Morrison would enter the coaching ranks in 1991 as an assistant swimming coach at Washington & Lee where he helped coach four NCAA Division III All-Americans. He also assisted with the school’s 1992 water polo team that won the Division III Eastern Championship and served as the interim golf coach.

Morrison and his wife, Amy, have a 15-year-old son, John, and an 11-year-old daughter, Avery Grace.

John Morrison is entering his 11th year as the head coach of the Navy women’s swimming program, as well as his 15th year of being associated with the team, in the fall of 2014.

Morrison and the Mids have tallied a record of 77-15 –– which includes two undefeated seasons –– with five first-place and three second-place showings at the Patriot League Championship over the last eight seasons. In all, Morrison has guided the Mids to a 93-25

record and either first (five) or second-place finishes at the Patriot League meet nine times in his 10 seasons. He has been tabbed as the Patriot League Coach of the Year four times and as the ECAC Coach of the Year twice.

The Mids ran their streak of consecutive Patriot League titles won to three –– as well as four in five years –– with their performance at the 2014 championship. Navy totaled eight event titles over the course of the meet to earn its league-best 13th team championship in 23 seasons. The Mids, who also won the 2014 ECAC crown, com-piled a 5-4 record during the 2013-14 regular season, a campaign that included the program’s 25th-straight win over Army and losses to nationally-ranked Virginia, Penn State and North Carolina teams.

One year prior (2012-13), Navy posted a 7-3 record during the regular season on its way to winning the Patriot League title. Three of the team’s four losses were to North Carolina, Virginia and Penn State, teams that went on to place 12th, 18th and 29th, respectively, at the NCAA Championship.

The 2012-13 season came one year after the Mids scored a league-record 933.5 points to win the program’s 10th Patriot League title in 2012, won its first ECAC championship and qualified a trio of Mids for the 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials.

The 2009-10 season was a record-breaking campaign for the Mids. After post-ing a 10-1 record during the regular season, with Navy’s lone loss coming to No. 11 Virginia, the Mids totaled 14 event victories on their way to winning the Patriot League title for the first time in three years. Additionally, 2010 graduates Tara Chapmon and Thuy-Mi Dinh made their second and third, respectively, appearances at the NCAA Championship in 2010.

Navy also posted the program’s first undefeated season during the 2008-09 campaign, part of a winning streak that would span to 25 meets before the aforemen-tioned loss to the Cavaliers in the 2009-10 season.

Individually, a Navy swimmer has earned at least a share of eight league swimmer-of-the-year accolades during Morrison’s 10 years, while the Mids have won a league-best 86 swimming event titles at the Patriot League Championship under Morrison’s guidance.

The program also has made strides at national events during Morrison’s ten-ure. Navy swimmers are regular participants in U.S. Swimming meets such as the USA Short Course National Championship, ConocoPhillips National Championship and the World Championship Trials. The 2008 season saw Dinh become the first women’s swimmer in Patriot League history to attain an ‘A’ cut qualifying time for the NCAA Championship, then she and Chapmon advanced to the national meet in

“We want our swimmers and divers to attain success both in the pool and in the classroom. Continuing to have success during our regular season, at the Patriot League Championship and striving to be competitive at the NCAA Championship will always be key foundations of our program, as is having both individuals and the team garner academic recognition. But we as coaches are here to do more than that.

“Developing a person away from the pool and fostering a sense of fam-ily within the team are also very important to us. The U.S. Naval Academy is known for producing great leaders, and we want the women’s swimming and diving program to reflect that, as well.

“Additionally, being a member of our program should be a fun and enjoy-able experience. We want the relationships and memories developed as a member of our team to last a lifetime.”–– John Morrison

“The goal of our program is to provide an outstanding environment that allows every team member to reach their academic, athletic, and overall personal potential. We desire to be thought of as the premier service academy for those who want to: 1). Serve their country, 2). Receive an outstanding education, and 3). Compete at a high collegiate level in swimming and diving. Additionally, we expect to compete annually for a conference team championship while also sending individual athletes to NCAA, U.S. Swimming and Olympic Trial meets.”–– Bill Roberts

Bill Roberts enters his 12th season as the head coach of the Navy men’s swimming team and his 15th year as part of the program’s coaching staff in the fall of 2014. Roberts has led the Mids to the Patriot League title in each of his 11 sea-sons on The Yard. Navy has tallied 138 swimming event crowns at the meet over his time, with the remainder of the league winning a combined 59 event titles. In addition to the team’s success at

the Patriot League Championship, Navy also has won five ECAC Championship crowns in the last six seasons. Roberts has been named as the ECAC Coach of the Year on each of those title-winning campaigns. Navy also has been successful during the regular season under Roberts. The Mids have posted double figure win totals in eight of his 11 seasons and an overall record of 121-41. Six of Navy’s 10 losses over the last two seasons have come to nationally-ranked foes North Carolina, Virginia and Penn State, with another coming to Princeton during the 2012-13 season. The Mids posted a 7-4 record during the 2013-14 season –– which included their 22nd-straight win over Army –– on their way to sweeping the Patriot League and ECAC titles. Seven Mids would then go on to compete at the 2014 NCAA Championship. The 2011-12 season was another memorable one for the Mids. Navy defeated both Virginia (15th at 2012 NCAA Championship) and Penn State (23rd at NCAA Cham-pionship) on its way to tallying an 11-1 record during the regular season. The Mids then became the first team in Patriot League history to win all 18 swimming events at the league meet, a performance that led Navy to its ninth-straight Patriot League title, and won the ECAC title for the fourth time in four years. The year concluded with 13 Mids qualifying for the 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials. Navy’s 2011-12 campaign came on the heels of a successful 2010-11 regular season that was highlighted by the Mids becoming the first team in the two-decade existence of DeNunzio Pool to defeat Princeton. The Mids posted a 167-133 win over the Tigers that day to snap Princeton’s home-pool winning streak of 94 meets. The Mids then established a new team points tally at the Patriot League Championship for the third consecutive year (1,031.5 pts.) to win the meet by 452.5 points. The year was capped off by Navy winning its third ECAC title in the last three seasons. With the success of the overall program, Navy also has consistently qualified individual athletes for national meets under Roberts. The program returned to the NCAA Championship Meet for the first time in nearly a decade during his inaugural season of 2004, with four swimmers competing in a combined six individual events at the national meet –– which included Noah White’s ‘A’ cut time in the 50 free –– and earning a pair of Honorable Mention All-America certificates in two relay events.

Navy again sent multiple swimmers to the 2009 NCAA Championship, with both Adam Meyer and Erik Hunter competing in a trio of events. Meyer would join the illustrious list of Navy swimmers to have garnered All-America accolades when he received Honorable Mention All-America honors that year. He then duplicated his efforts in 2010 to become the first swimmer in 40 years to garner multiple All-America accolades in a career. Meyer’s brother, Mark, joined Justin Vagts in competing at the 2011 NCAA Championship. Navy’s seven NCAA qualifiers last year was one short of tying the school record of eight (set in 1946, ‘61 and ‘65). Tom Duvall would advance to the championship final in the 500 free to bring another All-America accolade back to The Yard. Additionally during the Roberts era, Navy swimmers have annually taken part in national meets such as the World Championship Trials, the World Military Games, the ConocoPhillips National Championship and the USA Swimming Spring Championship. Success has also been achieved by the men’s swimming and diving team in the classroom under Roberts. A total of 132 Mids have earned Patriot League Academic Honor Roll accolades over the last 11 years, and the team as a whole has been recognized multiple times as an Academic All-America Team by the College Swimming Coaches Association of America. Roberts first arrived at Navy during the summer of 1997 when he joined Lee Lawrence’s coaching staff as an assistant coach. In three seasons together the Lawrence-Roberts duo guided Navy to a 27-10 record, including an 18-9 mark in the Eastern Intercollegiate Swimming League. Roberts coached Navy’s 200 freestyle relay team that won the 1999 EISL title, and helped develop sprinter Clint Cornell to a 2000 Olympic Trials appearance and to the 2001 EISL 50-yard freestyle title. A 1992 graduate of Springfield College, where he was a four-year letterwinner and served as team captain for two seasons, Roberts began his coaching career upon graduation as the head coach of the women’s team at Wells College in his hometown of Aurora, N.Y. After two seasons at Wells, he served as a graduate assistant coach at East Carolina, where he also earned a master’s degree in athletic administration. In the summer of 1996, he joined the Villanova program for one year before coming to the Naval Academy. Roberts left Navy in 2000 to become the head coach at Colgate, during which time his men’s and women’s teams combined to post a three-year record of 39-36. Roberts and his wife, Nicole, have three sons –– Will, age 15; Nick, age 13; and Jackson, age 11.

Rich MacDonald begins his second season as Navy’s men’s and women’s diving coach in the fall of 2014.

MacDonald’s inaugural 2013-14 season was a successful one as his nine divers entered into the Patriot League Championship combined to score points in 17 of their 18 events and compiled 12 berths in the championship finals of four events. Individually, Wil Mayo won both boards to be tabbed as the Patriot League Men’s Diver of the

Year, while MacDonald himself was selected as the league’s diving coach of the year. Additionally, Mayo, Ben Freedman and D.J. Principato qualified for the NCAA Zone ‘A’ Championship.

MacDonald arrived at Navy in the summer of 2013 after having served as the head diving coach at Virginia for the previous four seasons. One of his div-ers advanced to the NCAA Championship in each of his last two seasons. Briggy Imbriglia placed 13th on the platform at the 2012 national championship while J.B. Kolod placed 12th on the three meter –– the highest finish in an event by a Virginia diver at the meet in school history –– in 2013. The two are the lone Virginia divers to have earned NCAA All-America recognition.

Additionally, a minimum of three Virginia divers qualified for the NCAA Zone Championship meet in each of his four years, with all nine of his divers advancing to the 2013 event. Virginia swept the men’s and women’s Atlantic Coast Conference swimming and diving team titles and recorded a combined seven top-20 showings in the final team standings at the respective NCAA Championship meets during MacDonald’s four-year stint.

A 1997 graduate of Rhode Island, MacDonald began serving as the diving coach at his alma mater immediately upon his graduating from the school. He would coach a pair of conference champions and three NCAA Zone Championship meet qualifiers in his three seasons at Rhode Island.

MacDonald then became the first full-time diving coach in East Carolina his-tory when he accepted the position in 2000. He guided at least one diver to the NCAA Zone Championship meet in all but one of his nine seasons at the school. Additionally, MacDonald’s divers broke every school diving record during his stint at the school, he saw eight of his divers final in multiple events at the conference cham-pionship and he coached Christie Icenhower to the 2005 Conference USA Freshman Diver-of-the-Year award.

In addition to his 16 years of coaching on the collegiate level, MacDonald has also spent considerable time coaching on the club level. This includes six years at the Fort Washington Swim Club in his hometown of Fort Washington, Pa., nine years at the Emerald City Dive Club in Greenville, N.C., and four years as the founder, owner and head coach of the Wahoo Diving Club in Charlottesville, Va.

Rob Lias returns for his ninth season as an assistant coach with the Navy women’s swimming program in the fall of 2014.

A full-time member of the coach-ing staff, Lias has been an integral part of Navy’s regular season and postsea-son success over the last seven sea-sons. The Mids have compiled a 77-15

regular season record during Lias’ time on The Yard, while winning five Patriot League title and placing second at the meet on three occasions.

Lias himself was selected as a 2012 Honorable Mention Assistant Coach of the Year by CollegeSwimming.com.

Additionally, Lias served as the stroke coach for 2008 U.S. Olympic Trials com-petitor and three-time NCAA Championship qualifier Thuy-Mi Dinh.

Lias, who serves as Navy’s recruiting coordinator and designs the team’s dry-land and strength program, came to Navy after two seasons as a graduate assistant coach for the men’s and women’s programs at Auburn. After the men’s team won the NCAA championship during his initial 2004-05 season, both teams claimed national titles during his final year at the school. He began his coaching career during the summer of 2002 when he served as a volunteer assistant coach at New Paltz High School. After one season on the prep level, he moved on to the collegiate ranks as an assistant at Mount Union College. A 2000 graduate of Mount Union, Lias was a four-year letterwinner for the Raiders and served as the team captain during his senior year. He earned his way onto All-Ohio Athletic Conference teams 13 times during his career, won a pair of indi-vidual event conference titles (1999 in the 100 and 200 breaststroke events) and was named as the team MVP during his junior and senior years. In addition to his coaching experience, Lias also has run technique based swim-ming camps across the country through Total Immersion Swimming, Inc. Lias and his wife, Courtney, have a son, Cameron, who will turn two in October 2014.

Mark Liscinsky begins his second season as an assistant coach with the Navy men’s swimming team in the fall of 2014. Liscinsky spent the previous seven seasons as the head assistant coach for the American men’s and women’s teams. Serving as the sprint group coach for the overall program, his

swimmers set seven school records –– men: 50 free, 100 back; women: 50 free, 100 free, 100 breast, 200 medley relay, 400 medley relay –– and won four event titles at the Patriot League Championship. In addition to his work at American, Liscinsky also served as the head coach of the Washington Golf and Country Club team for six summers (2007-12). His teams won a trio of (Washington, D.C.) Country Club Swim & Dive Association titles –– 2009 (undefeated record, first title in 50 years), 2010 (undefeated record) and 2012 –– and placed second once over his final four seasons. A 2004 graduate of American himself, Liscinsky was a highly decorated swimmer in his own right. He set school records in five events –– four of which remain American records –– and was tabbed as the Colonial Athletic Association Rookie of the Year in 2000 and as the Patriot League Swimmer of the Year in 2002 and 2003. Liscinsky totaled 10 CAA Championship meet event titles (five individual event, five relay event) as a freshman and sophomore before adding 12 Patriot League Championship meet titles (six individual event, six relay event) as a junior and senior. A versatile swimmer, he won titles in five different individual events (100/200 back, 200/400 IM, 200 free) and in five different relay events (200/400/800 free, 200/400 medley). Additionally, despite competing in the Patriot League for only two seasons, his 12 combined titles at the meet ranked fourth in league history at the end of his career and, more than a decade later, still ranks sixth all time. On the national stage, Liscinsky competed in the NCAA Championship Meet as a senior, was a finalist in multiple events at the U.S. Senior Nationals, qualified for three U.S. Olympic Team Trials and was a member of the U.S. team that took part in the 2003 World University Games. Liscinsky and wife Kate are the parents of Sam, age three, and Maggie, who will celebrate her second birthday in November 2014.
