Swimming Upstream “Swimming Upstream” is a feature of the Bear Tracks for

2017-18 presented by the Brockman Parent Education

Committee. It is designed to provide words of support for our

Brockman family as we journey this Montessori path, in a

culture that often seems to be at odds with our philosophy.

Effective discipline means that we’re not only stopping a bad

behavior or promoting a good one, but also teaching skills and

nurturing the connections in our children’s brains that will help

them make better decisions and handle themselves well in the

future. Dr. Dan Siegel,

No Drama Discipline: The Whole Brain Way to Calm the

Chaos and Nurture Your Child’s Developing Mind

As a new year approaches, we often think about how we might make changes to bring about positive results in our lives. In January, the Parent Education Committee and the Brockman PTO are co-sponsoring a second session of “Modern Montessori Family: The Adventure of a Lifetime” for parents, paired with a family-style meal for attendees’ current Brockman students. This event will build on the foundation of September’s gathering and will focus on supporting the development of responsibility/accountability in children and on helping them learn how to “choose respect” in their interactions with peers and parents/adults. Set aside this date in the new year--Tuesday, January 30—to spend time with like-minded friends who are learning what it means to provide the support our children need now to help them become the moral leaders, confident learners, creative thinkers, peacemakers, and socially responsible adults of the future. We must help the child to act for himself, will for himself, think for

himself; this is the art of those who aspire to serve the spirit.

Canned Food Drive Huge Success!

By Penelope Mann and Sawyer Wren

Our school collected almost 1,700 cans of food for our

MLK annual food drive. This exceeded our goal of

1,500 cans. We would like to continue collecting cans

for the Souper Bowl of Caring. Please continue to

donate cans. The cans can be placed in the bins in

the cafeteria. Thank you for the help with our service

project. Way to go Brockman!

We

wish you

all the

joy and peace

of this holiday season.
