Methodology

Data was collected in December 2006 through interviews with stakeholders, house-to-house surveys, FGDs, and transect walks.

Information in each category was finalized in a meeting after brainstorming and discussions with the TSC cell members.

STRENGTHS WEAKNESSES1. 48 natural and 66 man-made lakes with a

total area of 1,200 hectares; 8,000 km² of coastline; 175,714 km rivers

2. Main fishing grounds include Black Sea, Marmara Sea, Aegean Sea, Mediterranean Sea

3. 947 known marine species of fish and molluscs

4. There are 25 fishery colleges at present and more than one thousand students enrol each year

5. Increased number of aqua feed industry – there are 9 at present

1. Inadequate cooling chain (deep freezing) at the stage of marketing

2. Heavy bureaucracy in governmental procedures

3. Low technical level of fishery sector in Turkey compared with EU

4. Present laws do not meet the requirements of the industry

OPPORTUNITIES THREATS1. Increasing demand for fish as diet food2. Change in preference of consumers from red meat to

fish and chicken meat due to the occurrence of the Bovine Spongiform Encephalopaty disease in the UK

3. Preference of Turkey consumers on fast food especially those that serve fish and chicken at low prices compared with red meat

4. Financial aids from other countries e.g. Japan, France5. The demand for fish is expected to grow proportionately

to the growth of population in Turkey6. Long range of prices of fish in the market gives

consumers choices7. Financial aids from local credit cooperatives

1. Over fishing and pollution in the Black Sea – production is decreasing year by year
