PRESIDENTS WELCOME

On behalf of the South West Slopes Stud Merino Breeders Committee I would like to welcome you to our 2017 Stud Merino Breeders Field Day to be held at the Harden Showground. This event is one of the largest gatherings of merino studs in Australia and is a fantastic opportunity for people to view 57 studs in the one place and on the same day. I would like to thank our major sponsor Landmark and all our other sponsors and supporters that make the day such a great event. The Field Day is all undercover and as well as stud sheep, includes sheep related displays and industry representatives. It has become one of the major events on the merino calendar. The merino industry is reaping the rewards of record prices for mutton, lamb and wool at the moment and together with a good season the future looks bright. The merino is the backbone of the large majority of sheep livestock operations and having the right genetics is extremely important to the productivity and profitability of your enterprise. The Field Day is a fantastic opportunity for producers to view and assess the different genetics available within the industry as the majority of the top producing studs in NSW will be on display. The South West Slopes Stud Merino Breeders Field Day is a day not to be missed by anyone in the merino industry and we look forward to seeing you there!

Regards,

Steve Phillips, President.

SWS STUD MERINO BREEDERS FIELD DAY JUDGES

Ben Simmons - Return Judge

Ben Simmons resides in Dunedoo Central West NSW

in partnership with his brothers who run the Talbragar

Border Leicester Stud on the family’s mixed farming

enterprise, comprising of irrigated lucerne and prime

lambs.

Ben has worked full time at Langdene Merino Stud for

the past 6 years.

He won the National Merino Junior Judging Event in

2011, and since then has judged at a number of shows

and associated at ewe competitions as well as South

West Slopes Field Day in 2011.

Tony Inder - Competition Judge

Tony Inder commenced his career in shearing from 1984

which spanned a 15 year period and married his wife Penny in

1991. Together they have raised three daughters on their first

block purchased in 1989.

In 2000 Tony and Penny purchased Allendale Merino Stud

from Eric Woods upon his retirement where at the time he had

300 ewes and was selling approximately 15 rams per year.

Today Tony & Penny have their home property Nyrang, located

at Wellington, where the stud of 900 ewes is based and also a

grazing block at Walgett. Tony now joins 6000 ewes over both

properties and has an irrigated lucerne farm on the Bell River.

At his last on property sale he sold 70 rams for an average of

$1670 selling over 100 rams a year.

St.ClementsAT GALONG

People come to St Clement’s Retreat and Conference Centre, Galong, for many reasons. The historic property on which St Clement’s stands passed into the care of the Redemptorist

Fathers in 1918 when they founded a monastery and boys’ college. After the college closed in

the 1970s, a retreat house took its place.

Today, the Redemptorists offer hospitality to a wide clientele - from those seeking spiritual

renewal to others with interests as diverse as the environment, education, history, writing,

embroidery, art and music. Special events such as operatic performances and historical events

are part of the cultural life of the centre. Some visitors come for a day, but many stay longer

to enjoy the ambiance and solitude.

Guided tours of the monastery and homestead precinct

are available along with generous country-style morning and afternoon teas, lunches and

dinners served in the dining room or by special arrangement in Galong House (c1850). There

are extensive grounds and a nearby historic cemetery to explore. The surrounding district

offers much for tourists, including quality restaurants and wineries, an abundance of fruit

from local orchards, art and craft and delightful rural vistas.

The centre is ideal for groups seeking conference and workshop facilities with a difference

and a variety of accommodation and meal packages are available for more than 100 people at

a time. Nutritious country-style meals are prepared in the kitchen and are a feature of the

hospitality offered at St Clement’s.

A spacious and well-lit conference room seats up to 100 people theatre style. There are several

other spaces available for smaller groups to gather indoors as well as on verandahs and in the

beautiful landscaped grounds.

For more information about St Clement’s, or to make a booking, contact Sue by either

Jack Whitechurch is a foundation member of the South West Slopes Stud Merino Field Days.

Jack is highly respected among his fellow stud breeders and has always dedicated

his time to help organise the South West Slopes Field Days. It was Jack who first

donated the Wendouree Shield, which is a pen of 3 rams and this has been a highly

contested event. Jack has won the South West Slopes Ram of the Year and his

sheep have won many championships at shows over the years. The Wendouree

Stud has produced many top sheep and his rams are keenly sought after. It is very

fitting and highly deserved that Jack becomes a life member of the South West

Slopes Stud Merino Field Day Committee.

For a sheep producer this is a staggering price to stomach given the current wool and sheep market in Australia is booming.

Eradication of lice would save so many $$$$$.

If you have sheep lice this year you can bet you will have it next year. Particularly if the lice are left untreated or not treated correctly.

Infested sheep have evident behaviours of being lousy and will attempt to alleviate the irritation by scratching, rubbing, biting and pulling at their fleece. Typically you will be able to see the tell tale signs on fences around your property where the sheep have rubbed leaving their cotted wool.

By examining your sheep the classic signs to look for are matted fleece, fleece colour change, reduced appetite and body condition.

It only takes one neighbours sheep to enter your property and mix with your mob. It only takes one newly introduced sheep into the mob to spread the lice like wild fire.

Do yourself a favour and give us a call today and eliminate lice in our state of the art mobile sheep cage dip!

Coddington Dipping

Did you know... that lousy sheep cost the Australian Wool Industry over $123 Million dollars a year?
