ATMOP objectives
• DTM: Development of an advanced semi-empirical Drag Temperature Model
– that has the potential to be adapted for near-real-time operation and – that is accurate enough to meet the requirements set by space agencies for orbit
computations..
• PHMOD: Physical modelling of the thermosphere• PROX: Define and assess new proxies to describe the external
(EUV and geomagnetic) forcing of the Thermosphere by the Sun which take advantage of the present state of the art in observational and data analysis capabilities.
• THERM: Support European research activities on forecasting techniques:
– by upgrading assimilation of thermospheric data into an existing semi-empirical model for near-real time prediction
– by developing thermospheric data assimilation based on a global physical thermosphere-ionosphere coupled model (CMAT2)

NADIR Focus Areas:
NADIR PI Jeff Forbes presented the project to ATMOP in Toulouse on 14 June and the existing collaboration - items I and IV - is expected to be extended to include II, III, V, VI and VII.
A joint workshop in Boulder is planned for October.

Mission objectives: High-resolution gravity field of the Earth
Mission orbit: Sun-synchronous, dawn/dusk, at 255 km
Payload: Gradiometer (accelerometers), GPS
Drag control: Ion thrusters commanded in closed-loop
• GOCE mission extended to 12/2012 (and second extension will be requested);
• Mission altitude expected to remain at 255 km thanks to weak solar cycle;
• First density results expected by the end of the year.
