A little about me…

Page 3: SXSW Recap

SXSW is Spring Break for Nerds“The reason we’re at SXSW, and the

reason everyone else is here, is that it’s the most concentrated influx of exciting, fun, early adopter, tech people who are willing to try out anything at least once.”

- Seth Priebatsch – SCVNGR

๏ 20,000 attendees (almost 40% increase over ‘10)

๏ 1,000 talks over 5 days by 2,000 speakers

๏ Ten different locations

๏ Every hour there were 25 – 35 sessions

Main SXSW Themes๏ 3 big themes were mobile, personalization and location-based

apps and how these personal interactive technologies were being applied to diverse businesses and social problems.

๏ Other Themes:

๏ Group Messaging – exploded at SXSW

๏ Sharing – advice, apps, panels, entertainment, etc.

๏ Hyper Crowd Sourcing – research, mapping, tagging, innovation, consulting services

๏ Relevance – For customers and ourselves.  How do we innovate - for ourselves, our agencies and our clients?

Page 8: SXSW Recap

Amusing but a little Desperate๏ Businesses / Entrepreneurs tried every way to attract attention, from

ridiculous get-ups to free parties.๏ Surprised that clearly a lot of work was placed into an idea or app

without much thought about marketing, financing or a business plan.

Large crowds can help…๏ Raised over $40K in 1 day and last I heard over $100K

Page 16: SXSW Recap

Some of the quotes I heard…๏ Marissa Mayer (Google) – “Experimenting is crucial to

the Google brand… Release Early, Release Often. There’s success but not without failure.”

๏ Gary Vaynerchuk (Author / Wine Library) – “The reason people love their parents is because they loved you first. Brands should consider the metaphor and give to their customers before asking things from them.”

๏ Genevieve Bell (Intel) – “When Wall Street Journal starts referring to people who don’t use Facebook as Facebook refusionists that’s when we start realizing how much we can’t be disconnected from these networks.”

๏ Guy Kawasaki (Author, Apple Fellow) – “The ultimate response to Thank You is I know you would do the same for me. Let people know that they owe you.”

To Reply Or Not To Reply

๏ Some people will just hate your company so only reply when it’s an actual complaint

๏ Companies like Delta are moving complaints off the wall and into a tab

๏ Social media is not a marketing medium. Treat it like a conversation.

Interactive TV๏ TV is not PC. PC is not TV. Kick back experience.๏ 86% of TV viewers have no idea what they want to watch.๏ TV should know what you like since they watch you watch TV.๏ Most people go to guide or flip around

since in US have over 500 channels. UKhas 100 channels so not as much choice.

๏ Using personal devices can solve thiswith a rich interface since 40-60% userswatch with another device in their hands)

๏ Better interface for discovering content. Tablet UI much easier comparing to updown remote) personal interactive ads.

๏ More than 70% watch with someone elseso an ad is too general. Can't interact download coupon, etc.

Game Layer is replacing Social๏ 22-year-old Princeton drop-out named

Seth Priebatsch, founder of SCVNGR.

๏ Priebatsch opined that the era of social is overand will be replaced by the “game layer.”

๏ He believes that everything from education toglobal warming could be more effectivelyaddressed if we applied game theory to it — building rewards into the system to generate enthusiasm and emotional connection.

๏ He believes it will provide a technological framework for "influence," since games influence people to take actions through both social interaction and game mechanics. The power that games have to shape people's actions, he said, is "fascinating, very cool, and just a little bit frightening.”
