History of Sydney
Sydney, Australia was founded when the first fleet of eighteen ships arrived at Port Jackson, New South Wales on January 26th, 1788.
Sydney was named after Thomas Townshend, the First Viscount (a British peer who ranks below an earl and above a baron)Sydney of England.
People and Region
Sydney is the largest city in Australia and also has the largest population. There are about 4,505,000 people in Sydney.
Sydney, Australia is a large city in the country of New South Wales.
Recreation and Activities
There are two very popular sports in Sydney. They are Rugby and Cricket. Cricket is Sydney’s #1 sport in the summer. A single game of cricket can last from three to five days while playing six hours each day.
Sydney Harbor Bridge
The building of the Sydney Harbor Bridge began in 1926. It took about eight years to complete.
The bridge took about sixty years to pay off.
The bridge is about 4,000 feet across.
Sydney Opera House
The Sydney Opera House was opened on October 20th, 1973 by Queen Elizabeth II.
It is one of the busiest performing acts centers in the world. The Opera House hosts over 1,500 performances a year, with about 1.2 million people attending.
A few groups that perform at the Sydney Opera House are Opera Australia, The Australian Ballet, The Sydney Theater Company, and The Sydney Symphony Orchestra.
