IntroductIon

After speaking to you, the visitors, and you, our exhibitors, we thought the time was right to present a complete evolution of our past events. Taking what worked, and adding the elements you asked for, in 2013 we bring you a new name, a new look, and a new approach. Welcome to the first edition of our global event: (Sydney) Indesign, The Experience.

The showrooms remain the stronghold of what the event is all about. The personality and hospitality to be found across the precincts are second-to-none and we urge you to take advantage of all there is on offer. This is your opportunity to see what the industry is up to, right now.

Of course, we’re also launching a little thing called Galleria. For the first time Sydney Indesign will incorporate a central hub to keep the footprint of the event manageable. So, although we have more exhibitors than ever, there are less locations – meaning it’s easier for you to get around and be inspired. We’re expecting great things in the Galleria space and are just as excited as you to see how it all rolls out.

Both design practitioners and design consumers will enjoy our new speaker series. Brought to you by Indesign (WorkLife) and Habitus (LiveLife) magazines, issues will be discussed and debated over the extended three day event. Come along and get involved – we want to hear your thoughts on the topics that matter to you, and to the wider community.

Look forward to seeing you there.

IN PARTNERSHIP WITH INDESIGN, PANELWALL WILL BE LAUNCHING THEIR SPECTACULAR NEW SHOWROOM AS PART OF SYDNEY INDESIGN’S FRIDAY NIGHT PROGRAMME.

The showroom, designed by KplusK Associates Hong Kong, is set to be one of the most breath-taking showrooms in Australia. Boasting an innovative ‘Echo Panel’ ceiling and a 3D glass forest, the showroom is certainly not to be missed. As the Australian representatives of JEB International, Panelwall certainly comes from a family of great designers. JEB has for long created a design frenzy all over the world, and Panelwall is set to do the same at this year’s SID event.

This event is also the international launch of JEB’s “KIOSK Communication Booth” so make sure you come along and see what the future holds for commercial interiors!

THE FUTURE OF DESIGN THO UGHT: WORKLIFE VS LIVELIFE

The workplace is one of the fastest-changing areas of design, driven as it is by new technologies. But how would the Australian A&D (architecture and design) industry rate their response to this challenge? “To be completely honest, the A&D profession is lousy at reflection and assessing results,” says James Calder, speaker at the WorkLife series presented by Indesign magazine. “We need to spend more time discussing and sharing with each other, as every project pushes the boundaries in new directions in one way or another. A regular forum would benefit all of us enormously and consolidate our place as market leaders.”

WorkLife takes place on Thursday August 15 at the Indesign Podium. If you missed out on a ticket, you can watch the discussion post-event on IndesignTV

This sums up the establishing principle behind WorkLife, with its inaugural seminar, ‘The Future of the Workspace’ opening Sydney Indesign 2013. The seminar consists of four panel discussions, curated to spark debate. In ‘Nabbing the Future’, Calder is joined by Leonie Lorrimer and Simon Pole, to explore the ideas behind the NAB at Docklands – and what these ideas might mean for the future.

‘Who’s Afraid of ABW – Is the Party Over?’ questions how much we even understand this concept – and whether it’s already obsolete. Speaker Rosemary Kirkby, Head of Sustainability at GPT, represents the property sector, and her perspective contrasts with that of Futurespace Director/Co-Founder, Stephen Minnett and Principal at HASSELL, Matthew Blain.

‘Workstations or Playstations – How Productive Is Your Workplace?’ confronts our assumptions about higher amenity leading to higher productivity. As speaker Laurie Aznavoorian says, “There hasn’t been any

effective study on productivity in traditional workplaces, let alone new contemporary workstyles!” She leads this discussion with Simon Trude, Mark Elliott and Jeremy Hocking, and her approach includes “appreciating the true costs of distraction, busting the ‘collaboration myth’ and the emotional toll of a free address environment.”

Led by Gijs Nooteboom, Bill Dowzer, Toby Read (Director of Sales Australia, Wilkhahn), and Lisa Dinham, the final topic ‘Lawyers Are People Too’ asks why certain industries have been impervious to workplace design revolution. Gijs’s imaginative and insightful approach involved directly interviewing lawyers: “If we know their nightmares and dreams about the way they work we can probably make their lives easier.”

“ With so many pivotal industry brains joining the conversation we’re expecting sparks to fly. This is how you catalyse the evolution of design practice and philosophy”

photographer, Tom Ferguson, and Development Director of Crown Group, Tim Campbell. They will be asking what quality multi-residential development is and how to achieve it, looking at recent examples and the role they play in creating new precincts.

In Australian architecture, Carol Marra, Director of Marra + Yeh Architects, notes, “Technology has allowed us to ignore the particulars of place, basically making the responses to place lazy.” Marra is one of the speakers leading the discussion on ‘Placemaking in Australia 2013’, joined by architects Peter Stutchbury and Fergus Scott. Hosted by Jardan, the discussion will consider important factors of placemaking architecture, like “the fragility of the land and the specifics of climate.”

Hosted by Spence & Lyda, ‘Can I Live in the Suburbs?’ will examine good suburbs, bad suburbs, and whether ‘Garden Suburbs’ are still feasible. The panel discussion is led by Principal at Woods Bagot, Domenic Alvaro, Mullum Creek representative Adam Wright, as well as architect and founder of Tribe Studio, Hannah Tribe.

THE FUTURE OF DESIGN THO UGHT: WORKLIFE VS LIVELIFE

Presented by Habitus magazine, LiveLife identifies this decade’s most pivotal issues in residential architecture. The Habitus Editorial team has curated each panel with a focus on interesting, diverse voices from a range of industries.

For instance, one of the speakers is Tim ‘Rosso’ Ross, comedian, radio personality and mid-century architecture/design aficionado. Ross joins the panel discussion ‘Is Old the New New? ’with Dr Caroline Butler-Bowdon, Assistant Director of Creative Services at Sydney Living Museums, and Bruce Eeles of Eeles Trelease Architects. Hosted by KE-ZU, this topic asks whether we’re making the most of what we have, and addresses the issues around protecting and repurposing old architecture. “Many houses built 50 to 60 years ago stack up better than the average suburban home built today,” Ross says. “That said,” he continues, “not all old houses are worth keeping and we do need to still build the great and historic houses of the future in their place.”

Looking in the complete opposite direction, the topic ‘Ant Heap or Home?’ looks at multi-residential living in the 21st Century. Hosted by Corporate Culture, the panel includes town planner and Senior Development Manager at UrbanGrowth, Vy Nguyen, Tony Owen of Tony Owen Partners, architect and design

LiveLife is hosted by various showrooms on Friday and Saturday. See the Timed Events section for specifics

THE PROJECTSYDNEY INDESIGN 2013

the projectUnleashing fresh creative energy through unexpected collaborations

The Project is a unique way of matchmaking different creative forces and giving them total design freedom. Architects, designers, visual artists – creatives in any medium – will be collaborating with high-end brands to push product to its most imaginative potentials. The theme this year is ‘Process’, which connotes both mechanical and biological systems, learning through doing, experience and change. This is always one of the most energetic and surprising components of Sydney Indesign, so be sure to check out the ‘Process’ installations.

CafE CulturE with StaCkDiscover the process of imagination in Cafe Culture’s woodlands. Their installation celebrates inspiration and insight, and it will certainly change the way you perceive creativity.

ChriS hardy with BEllwoodChris and Bellwood cut to the core of the theme ‘Process’ by responding with their own concept – ‘Link’. Just as the links between ideas move the creative process forward, Chris and Bellwood used the concept ‘Link’ to visually illustrate the process of developing a new product from concept to manufacture.

ClaSSiquE with duriE dESignFor Classique, Sydney Indesign marks the beginning of a new era. Their collaboration interprets ‘Process’ in light of this evolution – literally. They’ve used the forms of DNA to express Classique’s evolution towards new design collaborations, with DNA strands surrounding a Gallery within the Galleria. From this emerges the DNA double helix – the symbol of life’s evolution.

CoCo rEpuBliC and SmEg with futurESpaCEIn cinematic darkness, visitors are confronted with the need to make a choice. Two different journeys are possible; the visitor embarks on a high drama of two cultures, celebrating the craftsmanship and design process of the Italian Smeg or the English Timothy Oulton exhibition.

EuropanEl with gEyEr and thE initiativEBruce Mau says: “Whoever enters our orbit brings with them a world stranger and more complex than any we could ever hope to imagine… We fold their world into our own, and neither party will ever be the same.” Europanel, Geyer and The Initiative have crafted a unique orbit, the Indesign Podium: a complex sculptural form that integrates experiential relationships with the built environment to create a community space that challenges the senses – always changing, never twice the same.

EviE group with kikki.kTaking the inner workings of a designer’s mind as their inspiration, Evie Group and Kikki.K tell an insightful story by constructing a geometrical installation that expresses the key idea “2D to 3D: From paper to product”.

The installation is transformed by suspended elements and controlled light, blurring borders and creating them. Also UTS Industrial Design and Interior Design students draw their notions of ‘the design process’ directly onto a giant lounge, with visitors welcome to join in.

JamES riChardSon with daniEl dalla rivaLao Tzu on ‘Process’: “Nature does not hurry, yet everything is accomplished.” In an environment that advocates Slow Design, visitors are inspired to stop, explore, evaluate and reflect on their design ideas and processes. A tea-themed installation nurtures and stimulates, conveying the value of breakout furniture beyond its perceived functionality. Visitors are invited to become active participants in the design process, leaving their footprint.

kE-zu with yEllowtraCEAccording to KE-ZU and Yellowtrace, “The Process of Designing is about questioning the limits between the real and the imagined possibilities, creating alternate landscapes and environments.” Together, they look at the Creative Process of Designing Spaces, beginning in their window with an exploration of idea formation through free sketching. This progresses into concept planning, 3D studies and design development, ultimately demonstrating the creative process of designing spaces, and the role furniture plays in this journey.

LAUNCH PAD 2013SYDNEY INDESIGN 2013

OUR 2013 FINALISTSThis year’s designs encapsulate the creative

energy bursting out of the Australian design scene.

It’s all About the Approach

Andrew WattsStudio Black Navy studioblacknavy.com_

Dollop Light

Ash AllenAsh Furniture ashallen.com_

When a chair first hits the world, it is immediately categorised by the consumer to serve a purpose. This subconscious approach is due to a visual understanding of how we are meant to approach, sit and converse while being supported by a chair. This assumption allowed designer Andrew Watts to design for a certain space and environment utilising pre-conceived notions that the public provide.

Inspired by a dollop of cream falling off a spoon, designer Ash Allen wanted to create an asymmetric, yet perfectly balanced pendant light. Dollop is full of contrasts – slender at the top yet voluminous at the bottom, soft in appearance yet hard to touch. The glossy internal walls of the shade reflect the intense, directional light from the LED, to softly illuminate the space below.

Numeral

Andrew Southwood-Jones / Alexander KashinKINK kink-fab.com _

When designers Andrew Southwood-Jones and Alexander Kashin observed a gap in the industry, Numeral was born. Attributing their motivation to a lack of interesting number designs on the market, the two adopted the sculptural nature of stone and concrete to produce the number. With a warped and disorientating appearance, Numeral responds to a market opening that is seldom answered.

Dusk Pendant

Edward LinacreEdward Linacre Design edwardlinacre.com _

Franco Crea’s Mesa table and stool collection is aimed squarely at Australian architects and specifiers in a bid to encourage and enhance the Australian-made and owned ethos. Taking advantage of the available technology in Australia, the Mesa collection has a focus on high-quality craftsmanship, and a high-performing material to achieve an affordable product that can be specified in a broad range of projects.

Atmospheric ambience. These are the only words to accurately describe Edward Linacre’s Dusk Pendant. Filtering the light through a transparent amber shade, the lamp produces a warm, distinctive mood, enhancing the positivity of any environment where it is present. Derived from the sun at dusk, the Dusk Pendant communicates that familiar feeling of sunsets in summer – ethereal and dreamy.

Me & Me Too Lamps

Paul Townsinpaultownsin.com.au _

Informed by watching his children learning to play together, Paul Townsin was inspired by the way his youngest daughter developed by mimicking her older brother. The proportions of the lamps were influenced by the concept of one looking up to another with adoration. Townsin was determined to develop a light that not only provided an interesting light source but a striking and contemporary aesthetic.

Ella Table Lamp

Edward Wong Studio Make Made studiomakemade.com_

The Ella Table Lamp, designed by Edward Wong, challenges the archetypical form of the traditional table lamp. Inspired by the mechanics of an umbrella, the final shape was found and moulded out of a series of stacked plates, glasses and bowls straight from the dining table. The result? An ethereal, archetypal and abstract presence that oscillates between reality and dreamlike states.

Chevron Pendant

Richard [email protected] _

The Horologist

Roberto [email protected]_

Flexi-Bollard

Seaton McKeonZachume zachume.com_

An optical illusion of wavy black and white lines was the inspiration for Richard Harrod’s Chevron Pendant design. Intrigued that an image so obviously fixed could appear dynamic, Harrod’s design is an attempt to translate this illusion of movement onto a static, three-dimensional object. With a futuristic concept, and harnessing the magic of 3D printing, the Chevron Pendant indeed marks the wave of the future.

For designer Roberto Pereira, the motivation for The Horologist was to create a design piece which serves both a purpose as well as being aesthetically unique. Displaying the time of up to six cities, and a shape representative of a playing jack, The Horologist is designed to encourage the user to explore and engage with the object while allowing them to establish the time in various places around the world.

Seaton McKeon is inspired by travel – and the Flexi-Bollard system is a reflection of that inspiration. Street furniture is a marker point in time, reflecting current design trends, manufacturing processes and politics. McKeon set out to create a product relevant to a variety of public needs, malleable enough in design aesthetic to transcend local design bias.

Wait and Sea

Timothy Grisbrook Timothy Tuppence timothytuppence.com_

The forms of Timothy Grisbrook’s Wait and Sea range was inspired by the ocean – its waves, and the raw effect of erosion over time on our coast. Wait and Sea is a collection of tableware, made from solid timbers, for consuming great South Australian food and wine with company. These products evoke a feeling of connectivity, where each piece is unique in its own right, and carries a sense of human touch.

KEY GUIDE:

Sydney Indesign unites the five established design precincts of Sydney: Alexandria, Chippendale, Eveleigh, Redfern/Waterloo and Surry Hills, with this year’s addition of Galleria, our Milan-style super studio in Eveleigh.

YOUR EVENT MAP15–17 AUGUST2013

Choose your own adventure! Using the Timed Events section, map out your day to ensure you don’t miss any of the Sydney Indesign experience.

Our complimentary hop-on/hop-off buses will help you move easily between precincts, running all day Saturday in continuous loops, with a stop at every showroom. If you feel like a lazy Saturday stroll, most showrooms are within easy walking distance of each other, making it a breeze to see everything at Sydney Indesign.

On Friday, take advantage of our stylish transport partner Uber’s private car service. Just download the Uber app and use the code ‘sydneyindesign’ to redeem free travel.
