Thankyou to all the kids who represented

Sydney Indoor Hockey Association

along with their parents in

2015 - 2016

3

It is with great pleasure the committee at Sydney Indoor Hockey Association Inc present the 2016 magazine. We hope you find it interesting and informative.

The 2015 season might be described as a bumpy ride with a lot of confusion around the change in representative indoor hockey. Even the Sydney competitions suffered with the confusion and fell dramatically in the number of teams participating.

We cannot let that worry us and SIHA views 2016 as a start where full concentration can be applied to the local stuff. The biggest focus will be on generating new school competitions. We have a strong belief that indoor hockey works well with school children and lay’s the first stepping stone on a journey to club field hockey.

Competitions in themselves are reasonably easy to run. The problem is getting enough teams to participate and grow hockey in general. Communication is the big issue in the light that if you do not know about a competition you are not going to participate. If indoor hockey is to survive and re-grow a lot of marketing of the competitions needs to take place. The assembly of a marketing committee is being viewed as a good start and volunteers would be most welcome.

We look forward to a great indoor hockey season and thank our No 1 sponsor JUST HOCKEY for their continued sponsorship.

Alan Wiggins

I have been involved in both indoor and outdoor hocket for 30 years and in that time I have had the privilage of:• Playing in teams that had both father and son.• Coaching teams in which siblings were playing members.• Working with twins that umpire.

The most remarkable though is a father and son umpiring team. Like all umpires you start at a level comensurate with experience and I have seen them come a long way, improving remarkably over time.

Without these two umpires the Sydney Junior Indoor Competition at Hurstville would not be able to run.

Every week they turn up even though they do not have a junior playing in the competition. They help set up and pull down the boards.

When they are in doubt over a decision they have made during a game, they seek clarification to improve themselves for future games. They both have my upmost respect.

I would like to thank Marcus and Zach Jones for their support for the Sydney Junior indoor competition at Hurstville. It is individuals like Marcus and Zach who give back to hockey, that make the games possible every year. I hope that they will continue to support me and the SIHA. I would also like to thank all the Senior men who supported me in umpiring last year and for the finals also. I would like to take this opportunity to invite any junior umpires who wish to umpire in Sydney Indoor hockey in the 2016 to contact me. I will be more than happy to provide coaching. THE RESULTS OF THE CHAMPIONSHIP GAMES

Brilliantly umpired byTegan Lindsay and James Ellis

The northern schools all stars championship is an annual event which started in 2010. The concept of the event is to select the stronger players from all the schools playing in the Mosman competition and the same for those playing in the Abbotsleigh competition. The stronger players effectively form a representative team for the venue to which they played in term 4 of each year. There are 3 games within each championship with representative teams from each venue being under 13, under 15 and under 18 girls. The championship is a filmed event and you can watch the games by going to www.sydneyindoorhockey.com.au home page and select a game from the player list.

Junior TeamsUnder 9sThe Under 9 Competition is directed at school children with no hockey experience. There are 6 players on the court including the goalie, but it is recommended to have 8 to 10 players in the team and interchange throughout the game.

Under 11, 13, 15 and 18There are 2 to 3 grades depending on the number of teams. Teams are made up of boys and girls in any combination.

Northern Schools' CompetitionUnder 13, 15 and 18There are 2 grades where possible, within each age group.U15 and 18 Mixed has a restriction of no more than 3 boys on the court at one time.

Senior TeamsMen's and Women's Premier and A GradeThere is space for a maximum of 16 teams, 8 in Premier and 8 in A grade. These competitions are the highest grade. Preference will be given to club-based teams.

Men's and Women's B and C GradeOpen to all men's and women's teams below the top 16.

Mixed B GradeMixed B grade is strictly social - designed for girlfriends, boyfriends, families or groups of friends to play together.

The following are brief descriptions about various competitions and the philosophy used when grading. A game is 2 x 20 minute halves and there are approximately 7 rounds plus semis and finals. Choose your preferred home venue. To reduce travel SIHA are moving to home and away games. Where possible 2 games will be scheduled for the away venues, halving the number of long trips.

All players are welcome to play, from a novice to an Australian rep. The important exception is that we do not encourage all rep players to play in one team. The grades are split into B1, B2 and B3, which is based on the final makeup and standard of the teams.Umpiring is usually at the lower end of skill level, but adequate for this social event that doubles as a lovefest. It is recommended to have about 8 players in a team, with 6 on the court with regular interchange. Mixed hockey for seniors has a restriction of no more than 3 men on the court at one time.
