Synaesthesia exercise

Synaesthesia is a condition where a sensation in one of the senses, such as hearing, triggers a sensation in another, such as taste. For example, some people with synaesthesia can taste numbers or hear colours. The relationship between sound and vision in your music video can make spatial and temporal sense and have a visceral impact.

In lesson we had to do a synaesthesia exercise based on the music video by George Michael – A different corner. It is an 80’s song so none of us had actually seen the music video before we listened to the song, so here is what I came up with.

The song was actually quite peaceful, so I imagined a blossom tree blowing in the wind, on a summer’s night.

I set the scene as being like Vincent Van Goghs painting ‘a starry night. This was where I got the idea of having a high contrast of colours.

I imagined there to be cutaways and fade transitions into the artist’s memory. Perhaps the flashbacks would be shown in black and white, to establish a passage of time, and how he has moved on with his life.

The artist would often look at the camera to show raw emotion.
