A. ASTRONOMICAL EVENT AT VBITDate: 6th June 6, 2012

Timings: 9:30AM-10:30AMVenue: Vignana Bharathi Institute of Technology

ON the account of transit of Venus, IEEE-VBIT SB hadorganized an astronomical event of observing the transit

in the college campus by making a telescope arrangement withfilters. On June 6, a rare celestial event called a transit of Venustook place, and it won’t be repeated in anyones lifetime. Theevent of Venus passing in front of the Sun is called the transit. This is equivalent to an eclipse with the Moon replaced by theplanet Venus. During this transit, Venus has passed directly infront of the sun from Earth’s perspective, appearing as a small, slowly moving black dot.

The transit events are very rare. In the eternal motion aroundthe Sun, planet Venus overtakes the Earth once every twenty

Synapse June 2012

Page 4: Synapse June

. Dr. Jayant Kulkarni, Vice Prinicpal, VBIT observing the transit

two months. However at that time it need not be aligned withthe Sun. As seen from the Earth, it may be above or belowthe Sun. The orbital planes of Venus and Earth are different.Hence the two planets will be in line with the Sun only whenVenus is exactly on specified points which can be either inJune or in December. The June events can recur in an intervalof 243 years; so can the December events. Moreover, theyoccur in pairs separated by eight years. They occur in pairsseparated by either 105.5 years or 122.5 years depending onthe nodes (southern or northern). Thus the sequence is 1631and 1639, 1761 and 1769, 1874 and 1882, 2004 and 2012.The above figure shows that after 2004 there are five synodiccycles within 8 years bringing back Venus and Earth to theline of nodes in 2012. The figure formed by joining theseconjunctions is called a pentacle.

. Students keenly witnessing the rare celestial event)

So to observe this rare transit we IEEE-VBIT SB made atelescope arrangement at our campus. As the Venus was cast-ing its shadow on the Sun, it was considered as a partial solareclipse. This partial eclipse was covering 0.1Eclipse shouldntbe viewed with naked eyes as they cause retinal damage. Forsafe viewing filters are required. Filters usually have a thin

layer of aluminum, chromium or silver deposited on theirsurfaces that attenuates ultraviolet, visible, and infrared energy. Some filters available are 14 welder’s glass, aluminized mylar, completely exposed and fully developed black-and-white filmwith silver emulsion, medical x-ray films with images onthem, smoked glass, photographic neutral density filters andpolarizing filters. So the student branch members had madearrangement for filters too.

THE IEEE Educational Activities Board (EAB) organizeda symposium on Teacher-in-Service-Program (TISP) to

commemorate 10 successful years since the program startedwithin IEEE. The Symposium was held between May 18th-20th, 2012 at Tampa, Florida, USA and was well attended byover 35 TISP Champions and several pre-university educators(high school teachers) from 16 countries from around theworld representing various Sections and geographies

Symposium Agenda and HighlightsDay 1 May 19th, 2012Welcome- Serge Beauzile, Florida West Coast Section Chair andFreddie Wong, Symposium Chair/IEEE Houston Section

Group Activity : Lesson Plan Development - Brad Snod-grass, IEEE Central Indiana Section This was a hands on groupactivity when the participants broke out into 6 groups witha geographic distribution, and worked on coming up with abrand new lesson plan outline. Each of the groups discussedseveral modern areas of technology like mobile computing, electronic circuitry and so on and how the same can besimplified into a 2 hour lesson plan that can be adopted inthe classroom. The educators played an instrumental role ininforming TISP volunteers about the subjects being coveredin each grade and what topics would be most appropriate forinclusion into the training program.

This was followed by a Panel Discussion on Strategies toSupport a Teacher Professional Development Program.Theyspoke about the challenges they face in their school systemsand how programs like TISP can go a long way in makinglearning of science and mathematics a lot more fund and

the things that cannot be changed, courage to change thethings which should be changed, and the wisdom to distinguishone from the other. He went on to describe how the TISPprogram has been a change in mindset within the IEEE andoriented a good amount of IEEE resources towards focusingon pre-university education system from an earlier focus onengineering students and professional member programs.

The day concluded with a presentation by Yvonne Pelham,Manager IEEE Educational Outreach. Yvonne covered themechanisms used to measure the TISP programs includingmetrics like number of teachers covered, extent to which thehands-on experiments are being used in classrooms, numberof TISP programs in each country and so on.

TISP Best PracticesBrad Snodgrass from the Central Indiana Section (CIS) isone of the early pioneers of the TISP program and shareda number of best practices from his Section. In 2009,Central Indiana Section originated what they call the TeacherGrant Program. This program provides money for teachersto purchase materials for classroom presentation of TISPlessons. As of now, CIS remains the only section in IEEE toactively support such a program.

FundingA common theme from most volunteers was on how to createa sustainable model of funding for TISP programs. This topicwas brought to the fore by Dr. Moshe Kam in his keynoteaddress on May 19th where he outlined the key challengesthat the TISP program is facing, including the fact that mostof the funding is coming via NIC and Humanitarian ad hoccommittee. He stressed the need for TISP to be more self-reliant and raise funds locally.Concluding Remarks

Synapse June 2012

Page 14: Synapse June

In summary, the TISP program was a highly successfulevent that allowed volunteers who has been working locallyto come together for the first time at an international leveland discuss and share their work, thoughts and recommenda-tions with each other. It allowed the participants to establisha global network on TISP and coordinate activities acrosssections within and outside geographical boundaries. Withthis exposure, we at Hyderabad, should be able to take upTISP in a big way and improve the quality of high schooleducation by bringing in more scientific and practical elementsto the regular classroom training. In this context, TISP shouldbe not only viewed as a simple training activity but also asocial contribution from engineers to the more underprivilegedsections of our population who lack teaching resources andfacilities.
