LEARNING FROM LAS VEGAS: THE FORGOTTEN SYMBOLISM OF
ARCHITECTURAL FORMUGLY AND ORDINARY ARCHITECTURE
- ROBERT VENTURI, DENISE SCOTT BROWN, STEVEN IZENOUR
ISSUEConnotative architecture is dry, irresponsible
and irrelevant in a time where architecture should embrace iconography and mixed
media in a world of fast pace and commercialism.
THEORIES PROPOSED• Architecture should depend on its perception and creation of the past
experience and emotional association.
STARHILL GALLERY, KUALA LUMPURThe intention of the Architect of Starhill Gallery is to
create an iconic shopping mall in Kuala Lumpur, which shows irrelevance to the site and surrounding
context.
BALNA, BUDAPESTBalna, although it is an iconic building, it has also taken consideration in surrounding context and cultural aspects which gives the building its current form and is enriched through layers of meaning.
The circulation of Balna mimics the direction of flow of the river beside it. Other than that, it also integrates the belief that "The Whale" is a good symbolism. Thus, forming the shape of the building.
