SYDNEY PACIFIC ‘MEMBER PROTECTION POLICY’
The Sydney Pacific Athletic Club fully supports the ‘OneSport’ strategic focus of Athletics Australia
which encompasses Little Athletics (6-17 years of Age), Senior Athletics (11 years of Age and over)

NOMINATION FOR 2016 NSW SPORTS AWARD
Congratulations to Peter Crombie on being named as a Finalist in the 2016 NSW Sports Awards for
‘Masters Athlete of the Year 2016’. The award will be announced in February 2017. Peter, 72 years of age,
recently won 5 Gold Medals at the 2016 World Masters Track & Field Championships that were held in
Perth. Well done Peter!!
THE 2016 100km WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS IN SPAIN
The 2016, 100km World Championships
were held in Los Alcazares, Spain on 27
November 2016. There were 187
finishers from 37 nations at the
championships.
The male winner was Hideaki Yamauchi
(Japan) in 6:18:22. The female winner
was Kirstin Bull (Australia) with a time of
7:34:25.
This was the first time in any ultra
running World Championships that an
Australian has placed 1st.
Sydney Pacific Coach, Athlete and
Committee Member Gary Mullins,
representing Australia, finished 46th
overall in a very impressive 7:32:26.
Great effort Gary!! Congratulations.
Gary also races in track events - usually
starting with the 800m - a sprint
compared to 100km! Gary’s race tactic
in the 800m is to start at the back of the pack and make his way through the
field. He does this exceptionally well.

ATHLETICS AUSTRALIA UPDATE
Athletics Australia (AA) is currently finalising its OneSport Strategic Plan. In its 2016 Annual Report
(please click/tap here) AA presented a Draft Vision and Purpose for the Sport of Athletics in
Australia:
Draft Vision: ‘OneSport, with well-supported, seamlessly connected programs and events,
delivering a range of conventional and complementary athletic activities to all Australians.’
Draft Purpose: ‘To improve health, social, well-being and performance outcomes of
Australians through their involvement in walking, running, jumping and throwing.’
ATHLETICS NSW UPDATE
The Chief Executive of Athletics NSW Duncan Tweed has provided news items and updates to ANSW members
in both December and January.
For the December 2016 News please click/tap here. In this ANSW December News, Duncan discussed
progress against the ANSW objectives for the 2016/17 summer season:
1. Providing meaningful competition for athletes across all event groups
2. Making access to ANSW Summer Series events easier for Little Athletics members as well
as for people who might want to try athletics for the first time
3. Ensuring that there is a strong inter Club competition program, and
4. Building capabilities within our Member Clubs.
In a 14 January 2017 email, Duncan referred to the Athletics NSW Strategic Plan progress and the updates
that will be provided in parallel with input to be elicited from ANSW Members during January and February.
From Duncan’s email:
‘You will recall that all Clubs were asked to participate in a brief survey towards the end of last year to
assist in the framing of a strategic plan for athletics in New South Wales. This OneSport plan is intended
to be relevant not only to ANSW but to the whole of the Athletics Movement in the state. Accordingly,
work on this plan has been carried out in conjunction with Little Athletics NSW as well as NSW Masters
Athletics.
We are pleased to confirm that a first draft of the OneSport plan has been prepared and we would
like to provide further opportunities for all stakeholders to find out a little more about the process.
In the coming weeks there will be three opportunities to be a part of this discussion:
ANSW Country Championships in Dubbo. The session will take place at the track at 4:00pm on
Saturday 21 January, prior to the commencement of the evening session of competition
Hunter Track Classic. Exact time and place are yet to be finalised, however the session will take place
prior to the commencement of the program
ANSW All Clubs forum. As notified at the end of last year, we will be holding an All Clubs forum
in the Grand Prix room at SOPAC on Saturday 11 February. This forum will kick off in the morning
and finish prior to the commencement of the All Comers meet being held that afternoon. A more
exact program for that meeting will be distributed closer to the date.
Hopefully all Clubs have an opportunity to attend one of these sessions, which will give us an opportunity
to present where this process is up to and what the future might hold in store. It is important that we
continue to get feedback from as many groups within the Athletics Movement as possible in the
preparation of the final version of the OneSport plan.’
