About Our Community

Syracuse, Indiana is a small rural town of approximately 3,000year-round residents. It is located in Turkey Creek Township,

which has a population of approximately 9,000. In the summer-time, the population then increases to around 20,000 due to thepart-time lake residents. It’s because of the wonderful lakes inour community that the population increases so drastically everysummer from Memorial Day to Labor Day.

There are over 100 lakes in Kosciusko County and Syracuse ishome to both Syracuse Lake and Lake Wawasee, the largest nat-ural lake in Indiana! Thus, our rural area is also a tourism destina-tion. Syracuse sits in the northeastern corner of KosciuskoCounty, with easy access from US 6 to SR 13 from the north andfrom US 30 to SR 13 from the south. Syracuse has a total area of3 square miles, of which, 2.2 sq. miles is land and 0.8 sq. miles iswater.

There are severalactivities and eventsoccurring on and offthe lakes throughoutthe entire year.During the wintermonths, residentsand visitors mayenjoy ice skating,snowmobiling, skiing, snow kiting, ice boating and icefishing…just to name a few. In January, Syracuse hosts theAnnual Winter Carnival highlighting snowmobile drag races onSyracuse Lake.

May 15, 2015, marks the 27th Annual Cruise In. Held in down-town Syracuse, this event focuses on showing off antique and

modified vehicles ofall sorts as they lineMain Street. Inaddition to the cars,the downtown ispacked with foodvendors, games, abusiness trade expoand live music. The

following day, Saturday, May 16, is the Car Show, which bringsparticipants from all around the area!

July is a very busy time of the year for our small community!The week of July 4th kicks off with“Art Blast” the last Saturday in June.The two weeks surrounding the 4thof July are always full of events,from a 5k run, to Flotilla (boatparade), Tour des Lakes Bike Rideand, of course, lots of fireworks!

With the reopening of the newand improved Oakwood Resort, visi-tors can experience first-hand theawesomeness of our beautiful LakeWawasee. Whether planning aweekend visit, a wedding, or just aday trip…there is much to enjoy at

the OakwoodResort. Alongwith that,Chautauqua-Wawasee,based out ofOakwood, hasseveral culturaleventsplanned this

year that focus on four pillars – Education, Recreation, Religionand the Arts. Some of these events include Oakwood Fine ArtsFestival, Sept. 5; and “Oak”toberfest, Oct. 4, just to name a few.

Syracuse hasalso becomeknown for itsunique shops,art galleries andantiques. In2013, the Townof Syracusesigned a resolution that designated an area near the downtownas a “Riverfront District”. This will allow for more specialty shopsand restaurants to inhabit our fine community. Also in 2013 thecommunity was blessed with the Harold Schrock SportsComplex, offering the opportunity for kids of all ages to partici-pate in baseball, softball and football. In 2014, a Fitness Trail was

added to the complex.The Syracuse Artisan & Farmers

Market has become a must-dofor all residents and visitors toour community. This eventbegins May 9, 2015 and is heldevery Saturday through Oct. 10from 9am – 2pm at Veteran’sMemorial Park at Crosson Mill.From fresh, locally grown pro-

duce and flowers to homemade bakedgoods and fine art, the Market is fullevery Saturday in Syracuse! The FallHarvest Festival is slated for the finalday of the Market, (Oct. 10) and will beheld at Lakeside Park this year, as thisevent has outgrown the previousvenue of Memorial Park.

SYRACUSE PARK FACILITIESSyracuse maintainsa very fine systemof parks to add tothe recreationalopportunitiesenjoyed by resi-dents and visitorsalike. The SyracuseCommunity Centeris a hub of activityfor the whole fami-ly from seniors tochildren. It is locat-ed at 1013 N. LongDr. and includes a gym/multipurpose room, service kitchen, SeniorActivity Room, the Syracuse-Wawasee Historical Museum, computerlab, fitness center and is available to rent for events up to 240 people.

LAKESIDE PARKLakeside Park datesback to the 1930’swhen the area wasfilled and leveled toprepare the park inanticipation ofSyracuse’s centen-nial. It is now thelargest of the townparks and includesmany trees, abeach, restrooms,gazebo and picnic area. Family reunions and weddings are popularactivities at the park. Hot summer days find busy lifeguards overseeingthe swimmers that flock to the beach.

Many activities are planned each year for the parks.These include concerts, weddings, family reunions, a fish-ing tournament and much more. Volunteers spend manyhours planting and maintaining all of the beautiful flow-ers seen in the parks and setting up colorful lights for theChristmas season.

VETERAN’S MEMORIAL PARK AT CROSSON MILLVeteran’sMemorial Park atCrosson Mill isnamed forSamuel Crosson,another founderof Syracuse and isthe home to theSyracuse Artisanand Farmer’sMarket from May-October. The parkwas the site of early gristmills that utilized waters from Syracuse Lakeand Lake Wawasee to generate their power. A city-owned water con-trol structure is now located in the park which controls the water levelsin both lakes. A veteran’s memorial and clock serve as a reminder ofheroes who lived in our area.

THE HAROLD SCHROCK ATHLETIC COMPLEXComplex is located at 900 W. Brooklyn Street and was designed andbuilt to give Wawasee Youth Baseball and Wawasee Pee Wee Footballa permanenthome. TheSchrock Complexincludes: 4-base-ball/softball fields(2 with lights), amulti-purposefootball field, walk-ing fitness path,concession standand batting cages.

HENRY WARD PARKHenry Ward Park islocated on the TurkeyCreek Channel onMedusa Street. Thepark is named forHenry Ward, aSyracuse founder. Thesite was once used bythe B&O Railroad toprovide water fromSyracuse Lake for its steam engines. The park now has a pavilion, rest-rooms, fishing pier and playground equipment. An Indiana Departmentof Natural Resources public boat ramp is also located here.

Hoys Beach – located on Front St. in Syracuse, is asmall public beach on Syracuse Lake to swim and picnic.

The Skate Park – located behind the SyracuseCommunity Center, just across from the Syracuse PublicBeach.

The Municipal Pier is located at the curve where E.Main St. turns into N. Long Dr. in Syracuse. This pier isdonated by Sudlow’s Pier Shop of Syracuse for boats todock and walk to the downtown area to shop and dine.

Located in the Syracuse Community Center across from LakesidePark, the Syracuse-Wawasee Historical Museum has been offering aglimpse back in time for the Lakeland area since 1987. It was foundedwith funds gained from the Syracuse Sesqui-Centennial Celebrationand occupied a room in the Syracuse Public Library until June 2002,when it moved to its current location.

The main attraction at the museum, the Mier Car, is available on a postcard for purchase, only $1 plus tax.

The Syracuse-WawaseeTrail is a network of exist-ing and future trails con-necting the town ofSyracuse, Lake Wawaseeand Syracuse Lake. Voters RegistrationTo register to vote it is required that you be a U.S. Citizen, 18 years ofage by the time of the general election, a resident of the township forat least 60 days and a resident of the precinct 30 days by the day of thefall general election. Applications are available at the Syracuse Library,the township assessor’s office and the town clerk’s office. You must beregistered at least 30 days prior to the election. Primary Election is heldon the first Tuesday after the first Monday in May of each year in whicha general election is held, at which time state, county, city, town ortownship officials are elected. General Election is held on the firstTuesday after the first Monday in November following the Primary.

Driver’s License and Automobile RegistrationThose who are new to the state of Indiana must obtain an IndianaDriver’s License and register their vehicle within 60 days of their arrivalto the state. Both a written and visual test must be passed. The oldlicense, social security card, birth certificate and a bill with the newaddress are required. Instruction manuals may be obtained from theLicense Bureau or at the BMV website, www.in.gov/bmv.
