Fire seasonThe Wildfire Mgt Branch is sending 31

firefighting personnel to the Yukon to aidin fire suppression efforts there. Tenthree-person initial attack crews and oneagency representative left yesterday.

The request for assistance was madethrough the Canadian Interagency ForestFire Centre, which co-ordinates the mu-tual sharing of firefighting resources be-tween BC and other jurisdictions. Allassociated costs are covered by the juris-diction that requests the resources.

Considering the current and fore-casted fire situation in BC, sufficient per-sonnel and resources remain in theprovince to respond appropriately to anyfire activity here. Crews can be deployedout-of-province for up to 19 days, butthey can be recalled at any time.

Another 21 personnel, 4 fixed-wingaircraft and a helicopter are currently sta-tioned in Alaska.

The 77 firefighters and 1 agency rep-resentative that are currently deployed inAlberta are expected to return home onWednesday, June 24.

The forecast for today is 27°C, thentemps are going up: 33° tomorrow, to 39°for Saturday, dipping only slightly to-wards Monday. And this at a time ofyear, normal temps range around 24°C.The fire danger rating is high in our area, and all around the province.

In total the Wildfire Mgt Branch has responded to nearly 500 fires already thisyear, approx. half were lightning-caused and half were human-caused. Over 60,000hectares have burned to date, well above the 10-year average of 16,327 hectares.

They’ve already spent $52.5 million of the $63 million budget for this year. In thepast, when necessary, the provincial government has drawn cash from its contingencyfund to cover the extra expenses. 2014 was the 3rd worst season on record, when1,424 fires consumed more than 359,000 hectares, costing the government $293 millionin firefighting efforts. The worst fire season was 1958 when fires burned 859,000hectares. In 1961, when 483,000 hectares were burned.
