43.40.Yq SYSTEM AND METHOD FOR MONITORING TORSIONAL VIBRATIONS AND OPERATING PARAMETERS OF ROTATING SHAFTS

Dana A. Walker, Arnold, Maryland 21012 and Michael D. Walker, St. James, New York 11780

19 October 1993 (Class 73/650); filed 22 July 1974

Two sets of finely spaced line segments (5 to 10 per mm) parallel to the shaft axis are provided on the shaft, separated by some distance along the shaft axis. Near each set there are mounted two sensor units on opposite sides of the shaft, with each sensor unit consisting of light sources and a photo detector. A Ronchi grid mask in front of each detector serves to average out small scale irregularities in the line spacing while permitting collection of more light. The periodic signals resulting from the detection of light scattered from the line grids are processed to produce phase difference and line count information to determine shaft speed, twist, and torsional strain instantaneously.--EEU

43.40.Yq METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR MONITORING MULTIPLE POINTS ON A VIBRATING STRUCTURE

John E. Judd et al., assignors to VibraMetrics, Incorporated 26 October 1993 (Class 73/579); filed 12 November 1991

This patent pertains to means for measurement of the vibrations at multiple points on a structure essentially simultaneously, permitting the cal- culation of mode shapes. Each vibration sensor (accelerometer) is connected to an anti-aliasing filter which removes all frequency components above a selected cutoff frequency, corresponding to the highest frequency of interest. The filter outputs are fed to an analog multiplexer, which is driven by a clock to sample each channel at a frequency that is at least twice the cutoff frequency. An analog-to-digital converter is connected to the multiplexer's output, and the resulting digital signal is stored for further processing.-- EEU

43.40.Yq BEARING CONSTRUCTION AND VIBRATION DETECTING APPARATUS

Hiromitsu Okumura, assignor to Denshi Seiki Kogyo Kabushiki Kaisha

26 October 1994 (Class 73/660); filed in Japan 10 April 1991

This patent pertains to a shaft support system for use in unbalance measurements. It consists of a semicircular support for the shaft with means for feeding pressurized fluid between the support and the shaft, plus means for detecting the displacement of the rotating shaft relative to the support.-- EEU

43.40.Yq MICROWAVE ACCELERATION TRANSDUCER

Aron Z. Kain, Los Angeles, California 90035 16 November 1993 (Class 73/517R); filed 17 October 1991

A dielectric resonator, mounted within an electrically hollow cavity, is excited at several of its resonant modes selected so that several vector com-

ponents of the displacement of an object located near the resonator can be determined. If this object is elastically supported, and deflects as the result of an acceleration of the assembly, detection of changes in the modes per- mits evaluation of the acceleration vector.--EEU

43.40.Yq ARRANGEMENT FOR DETECTING AN OBJECT BY MEANS OF SOUND CONDUCTED THROUGH A SOLID BODY AND METHOD OF USING SUCH ARRANGEMENT

Bruno Muller, Stettfurt, Switzerland 30 November 1993 (Class 246/124); filed in Switzerland 12

January 1990

In order to detect an impact sound (such as that procured by a rail vehicle approaching a construction location) a structureborne sound vibra- tion sensor is mounted on the transmitting medium (e.g., the rail). An evalu- ation circuit triggers a warning signal when the sensor's output signal in a predetermined frequency range passes through predetermined threshold val- ues during predetermined times.--EEU

43.40.Yq ACCELEROMETER SENSOR NOISE REDUCTION METHOD AND MEANS

Donald J. Scheiber, Columbia City, Indiana 46725 7 December 1993 (Class 367/140); filed 27 July 1992

This patent is applicable to reducing the noise that is caused in direc- tional hydrophones (which basically act as accelerometers) due to pitching motions of the hydrophone. The sensor is located along the vertical axis of the platform at the distance from the platform's center of rotation at which

the horizontal accelerations at the platform's pitching frequency are can- celed by the radial gravity component on the sensor.--EEU

43.40.Yq MULTICOMPONENT ACCELERATION SENSOR

Edmund Schiessle et al., assignors to Mercedes-Benz AG 4 January 1994 (Class 73/517R); filed in Germany 17 March 1990

An essentially uni-axial sensing component is attached to each of the six faces of a mounting cube to constitute an arrangement that provides signals corresponding to acceleration in three orthogonal directions. Each sensing component consists of a short, thin cylindrical shell that is fixed to the mounting cube at one end and carries a mass at its free end. The shell's outer surface is partially covered with a layer of magnetoelastic material, and a coil surrounds the shell so as to sense changes in permeability that result as the magnetoelastic material is compressed due to the inertia force produced as the mass is accelerated axially.--EEU

43.40.Yq THICK FILM ACCELEROMETER

Bradley R. Knigga et al., assignors to General Motors Corporation and Delco Electronics Corporation

11 January 1994 (Class 73/517R); filed 8 April 1992

This accelerometer, intended to be suitably rugged for use in automo- tive applications, is preferably formed from an alumina substrate. A U-shaped cut separates a rectangular plate into an outer U-shaped flex- ure member and an inner support member. Piezoresistors mounted on the two sides of the two legs of the flexure member are connected to form a Wheatstone bridge, whose output voltage provides a signal that corresponds to the strain in these legs, and thus to the acceleration.__EEU
