1. Skaltek System X Pay-offs and Take-ups are the fundamental modules in System X. Already in 1975 Skaltek had a concrete vi-sion about the futuristic cable factory, based on automatic reel handling and optimal ma-terial flow. (See Skaltek Futura 2010, pages 22-23).

2. The Skaltek Classic Design from 1976, with self centering pintles and adjustable portal design, was the foundation for this de-velopment. Skaltek started the development of System X already in 1981.

3. Skaltek’s ambition is to be responsible for a total solution. To make this possible, Skaltek had to focus on Simplicity, in order to obtain the highest level of reliability. The best experience from the Classic Pay-offs and Take-ups served as backbone for the further development. Skaltek’s ambition was to build the “Best of the Best”.

4. The System X Pay-offs and Take-ups were

introduced in 1982. One of the main inven-tions was the system with tires driving the ro-tation of the reel on the rims of the flanges.

5. The new solution eliminated drive pins and provided a “built-in” gear ratio, as

smaller reels could be rotated at higher rpm while larger reels were rotated at lower rpm – a result of the geometry between the drive wheels and the diameter of the reels.

6. In 1989 System X had a major break-through. Skaltek earned the confidence to develop a complete reel handling solution for a new cable plant in Norway. Based on the earlier machine design from 1982, Skaltek presented the customer with de-tailed factory layouts and showed slide pre-sentations of animated material flow, based on paper models built in scale 1:10. The customer felt confident and placed an order for 25 machines and complete take-up and pay-off applications with accumulators, etc. Maybe most groundbreaking of all was the Automatic Guided Vehicle system which was included in Skaltek’s solution. Four new Sys-tem SX AGVs were included in the order.

7. The entire solution is based on the self centering pintles, in order to be able to per-

form a fully automatic reel change without operator supervision.

8. Another cornerstone of System X is the ro-tation of the reel with tires driving on the rims of the flanges. The drive wheels are standard automotive tires, which ensures long durabil-ity, low cost and availability for replacement. Initially a concern raised by customers was the lifetime of the tires – today we know from experience that this was a totally unfounded worry. Drive wheels can have a lifetime of at least ten years in full production!

9. The position of the drive wheel in relation to the rim of the flange is always correct and does not have to be adjusted by the operator. A simple and brilliant geometrical solution for the positioning of the drive wheel is built into the machine – when the portal height (reel diameter) is adjusted, the drive wheel automatically moves accordingly. When the reel is raised from the floor by the pintles, the flanges press into the tires enough to provide the needed contact and friction for secure reel rotation.

10. Depending on the application, either one or two drive wheels are needed. If a machine is delivered with one 4 kW drive unit, for a slow or low tension application, another 4 kW drive unit can be added (for high-speed) in the future, if the application/needs change. The solution with drive wheels also provide for better emergency stopping of reels, which further adds to the operator safety.

11. Today the System X Pay-offs and Take-ups are abundantly supplied in most ap-plications, for conventional reel handling without AGVs. Customers who have expe-rienced the advantage of eliminating the drive pins, of having a greater flexibility of reel sizes and line speeds without having to select gearsteps, and many other significant advantages, have increasingly standardized on the tire driven System X machines.

Result – Reward – Return of InvestmentIn 1992 NKT Cables in Denmark built a fu-turistic power cable plant which was based on System X, with automatic reel handling. The project was a success and System X is still creating Customer Value and Confi-dence today.

2. The rotation of the reel is done by two AC-controlled drive units. The machine is equipped for speed control mode as well as torque mode. At an extra charge, the ma-chine can be equipped for torque mode.

3. The machine is equipped with a Siemens touch screen panel. The display is used to set the reel size and cable diameter. The text display can, of course, communicate infor-mation to the operator, to educate and avoid errors, as well as provide feed back in order to maintain peak performance.

4. The take-up is equipped with a digitally controlled servo motor for accurate laying control. The PLC-program and the digital Servo Control makes it possible to position the take-up at an exact starting point (at the inside reel flange). The machine will contin-uously calibrate its exact position, in order to ensure optimal laying quality.

5. The pintles are raised and lowered ap-proximately 60 mm, which enables quick reel changes. At the same time, full connec-tion is established between the tires and the rims of the flanges. When the portal height (reel diameter) is adjusted the geometrical design provides for automatic adjustment of the drive wheel position according to the ac-tual reel diameter.

6. Depending on the application and the safety requirements, the machine can be equipped with guard doors on the front and/or the rear. As an option, these guards can also be supplied with light curtains.

7. The machine is traversing on steel rails, which are embedded flush with the floor lev-el. The rails are supplied in standard lengths of 5 meters to accommodate any required traversing length, layout, material flow, etc.
