New Court is the prestigious new head office complex constructed for Rothschild Bank. The 75 metre high project has become an iconic presence in the city as it is the fourth building occupied by Rothschild Bank on this site since 1809. Rothschild project manager Tony Chapman said:

”Rothschild has made a commitment to the City of London that has endured across six generations. The new New Court is of significant historical and architectural importance and continues this commitment.”

The building is the first London project by Rem Koolhaas and Ellen van Loon of OMA Partners Architects and only their second in the UK. The 21,000 sq m of office space is set out over 15 storeys with views of St Stephen Walbrook Church, St Paul’s Cathedral and the city beyond.

A combination of structural steel and glass creates plenty of light for the open plan office space, reflecting its opulent surroundings. By creative use of stone flooring inside, the architects have achieved a natural flow with the exterior hard landscape, The seamless integration results in making the glass ground floor facade almost superfluous, whilst adding an air of solidity to the structure. A similar effect is achieved by ingeniously linking the stone soffit with the stone ceiling. The highly polished stone ceiling and soffit exactly mirror the stone flooring, in every sense of the word. These visionary elements give the impression that you could almost whip away the doors and windows and the building would remain in place. Rather akin to pulling away a tablecloth and leaving the crockery and cutlery intact.

The Ceiling

Szerelmey installed an innovative suspended ceiling at New Court which offered a range of distinct advantages to the client and theoverall construction process.

The unique travertine and stone suspended ceiling enabled the air conditioning and electrical equipment to be stored in the void whilst still giving the grand appearance of solid stone. As such it provides all of the traditional benefits of a suspended ceiling in a style that befits its surroundings.

It was assembled off-site in separate panels eliminating the inefficiencies of the traditional ‘wet trades’ involved in a stone ceiling.

These efficiencies were not only construction related. The emphasis that Szerelmey place on value engineering design and research paid dividends in

every respect. The system only took 20% of the time it would have taken to install a traditional stone ceiling. Time on site is a very expensive commodity, especially in London. The expertise that Szerelmey can offer with design and installation resulted in a substantial saving.

Darren Moore, the Szerelmey project manager explains

“A great deal of electrical equipment relating to lighting and security cameras is hidden above the ceiling panels at New Court, yet the client still has what appears to be a sophisticated stone ceiling”

“ Installing a traditional stone ceiling is heavy work and time consuming, it requires dedicated access, lifting gear and heavy duty steel fixings. The prefabricated suspended ceiling system we used at New Court was easier to install and gave the client more options. We are excited about the future prospects the system has to offer due to the significant value engineering benefits it provides. Travertine stone was used at New Court but the same could be achieved with any stone. We expect to be working on similar projects at other offices, luxury hotels and residencies that require the style that this system can achieve”

Material List:840 square metres of travertinestone. 420 sq m internal and 420sq m external.

The Floor

The natural travetine floor throughout the internal ground areas has the look of a grand, hard finish solid stone floor, but still provides all of the advantages of a raised floor permitting space beneath for electrical equipment.

Stone floors add style and sophistication to buildings but may be overlooked by architects because of the challenges of theinstallation. Szerelmey considered all of the possible disadvantages and designed a system to overcome them.

When laying a traditional stone floor a screed or cement bedding is usually required. This takes a long time to dry sufficiently, causes access problems and involves a lot of dust and mess. Careful planning is required to avoid damage to anyfixtures and fittings that are already in place. A solid floor leaves no room for building services and once it is down, cannot be changed.

The Secret

We don’t want to give too many secrets away but the system was designed specifically to allow a speedy installation with the minimum of fuss. There may well be logic in approaching a leading installer rather than a manufacturer on this basis.

The floors use calcium sulphate boards which contain a high proportion of recycled material and also provide good acoustic properties. The monolithic strength is achieved by using large format boards which are routed to have matching tongue and grooves. The layers of stone or other hard floor finishes are then pressure applied to the boards off-site saving time and disruption.

Because of the advanced system, changes to the floor can be achieved with minimal disruption allowing access to underfloorservices.

Material List:Internal Travertine raisedaccess flooring 420m2 stone from Pacifici,1200 x 600 x 20mmpedestals, floor board, gluesand mastics from Mero TSK,Germany.

“Although the floor israised, BRE tests haveestablished thatSzerelmey’s raised flooringsystem can accommodatea 30KN point load”
