GUIDING VALUES (continued)

Branches and community-based Program Centers are energy centers that generate financial resources, nurture volunteers, and develop staff to meet the needs of their divergent communities. " At every level, we will encourage collaboration and provide leadership for inter-branch and inter-organization cooperation that maximizes human, financial, and facility resources " Clean, attractive, well-maintained facilities and program equipment invite participation and are fundamental to our ability to meet our goals.

Our programs are founded with a commitment to provide education, recreation and services that promote family wellness and good health . " We operate the YMCA in a fiscally responsible manner and within approved financial policies with managed growth and adequate reserve to provide for the unexpected.

We believe that the individuals making up our staff are exceptional and are the key to the Y's service to the community.

The YMCA has 80 full-time staff members and over 300 part-time and seasonal employees. Of the 380 total employees in 2004, 247 (65%) are women, 144 (38%) are members of a minority group, and 8 (2%) are persons with disabilities .

SPECIFIC PROGRAM DESCRIPTIONS AND PROGRAM SERVICE ACCOMPLISHMENTS

YMCA AQUATICS - YMCA Aquatics programs are a part of the Y's overall goal of building healthy spirit, mind, and body. In addition to providing specific swimming and water safety skills, they promote good health through regular exercise . They also promote teamwork, self-confidence, and leadership. These programs are offered at fees affordable to the community-at-large, with financial assistance for those who can't afford the full fee.

As residents of a riverfront community, people in this community could be subject to traumatic incidents around water. Our aquatics programs help to prevent deaths and injuries . In 2004, 1,921 participated in aquatics programs, infants through seniors. Approximately 1,094 children took progressive lessons at the Y, and 487 adults participated in aquatic exercise programs . Over 200 participated in our arthritis and other specialty rehab aquatics classes, which increase joint flexibility and help relieve pain, a healthy alternative for people who are unable to participate in regular exercise classes. Over 52 teens learned lifeguarding skills in our lifeguard classes .

YMCA FAMILY LIFE PROGRAMS - Strengthening families and meeting the needs of children have always been central to the YMCA's mission of building healthy spirit, mind, and body for all. The central focus of all YMCA pre-school and school-aged childcare programs is to foster growth and development, not only in children but also in their parents and families . Accordingly, parents play an important role in policy and program decisions . YMCA childcare curricula helps children develop moral and ethical behavior, self-esteem, and leadership skills . Y childcare allows parents to be gainfully employed, knowing that their children are thriving in a safe, supportive environment. YMCA financial assistance policies help ensure that the YMCA is a safe place where children of all economic levels, from the affluent to the disadvantaged, receive the same quality care in the same setting.

YMCA Child Care is offered at 17 sites throughout three communities and serves over 950 children per day.

The YMCA is proud to be a family organization . We give families a safe, reliable, and affordable place to go. Our Families First program, which meets weekday nights, allows families to relax and enjoy each other. Family swims and special family activity events bring groups of families together and allows parents to learn from each other and from their children in an enjoyable way.

YMCA HEALTH AND FITNESS - The familiar YMCA triangle emphasizes the oneness of spirit, mind, and body, and YMCAs have been offering health and fitness programs since the 1880's . YMCA health enhancement programs help achieve this unity through wellness-based programs that stress proper exercise, nutrition, stress management, avoidance of drug and alcohol abuse, and health education.

YMCA's offer a lifelong progression of wellness-based health and fitness activities, experience, and education, including programs for children, teens, families, and seniors . Programs and services include Lifestyle and Fitness evaluations, Blood Pressure Screening, Youth Fitness, Beginner- Advanced Fitness Classes, Aerobics, "Back-on-Track progressive rehab program, Pulmonary/Cardiac Rehab Maintenance Program, and Weight Management . A Youth Wellness Center opened at the Central Division in September 2001, to provide children the opportunity to

workout in a safe, age-appropriate environment. A new personal workout room was designed for women prefer a more private exercise environment. The "PWR" Room opened in February 2004.

People with disabilities and those with chronic ailments such as arthritis, cancer, and heart disease find YMCA programs that are tailored to them. YMCA programs are designed to attract people of all ages, all abilities, and all incomes. YMCA's offer a welcoming atmosphere where new exercisers can feel comfortable and receive the support they need to improve their health. Most people can afford low-cost YMCA health and fitness programs . YMCA financial assistance policies help low-income people who are less likely to exercise and to have adequate health care gain access to the YMCA.

The YMCA also offers a variety of fitness programs for our senior population . These programs address the needs of Active Older Adults through low-impact Water Fitness and Strength Training. We also meet the needs of less active older adults through our Chair Exercise, Chair Aerobics, and modified strength-training programs. Our programs are conducted at our main branch as well as numerous retirement facilities, senior centers, and schools throughout the area .

In 2004, an average of 1,000 individuals participated in Y fitness classes per month.

YMCA CAMPING - YMCA day camps develop self-confidence and self-respect when campers meet challenges and learn to cooperate . Y camping programs are educational; they promote spiritual awareness, mental development, physical well-being, social growth, and a respect of the environment. Through a variety of activities and the use of natural surroundings, YMCA camping seeks to help participants achieve their fullest potential in spirit, mind, and body. Low-cost YMCA camping programs also are a safe, high-quality alternative for working parents. Knowing that a child is being cared for in a Y camp program enables these parents to remain gainfully and productively employed . As in the case of other YMCA programs, financial assistance is available for those who cannot afford the customary fee .

The Springfield YMCA purchased a resident camp, Camp Norwich, from Springfield College in late 2002 . During 2003, significant improvements were made to begin the long process of preparing the camp to reopen .

In 2004, 1,247 children attended Springfield Y camps . Of these, 227 (18%) received financial assistance totaling $126,050.

YMCA TEEN LEADERSHIP - YMCA youth and teen programs give kids good role models to help develop self-esteem and good values, including : cooperation, respect for the body, good citizenship, and a strong work ethic. Teen activities are among the most rapidly growing YMCA programs, reflecting the growing awareness that adolescents need structure and activities, especially in the after-school hours.

The YMCA is the lead agency of the North End Youth Center that is operated in collaboration with the New North Citizens Council and several other community-based organizations. The center has 750 young people registered, all of whom are subsidized .

The Lower Liberty Heights Youth Center opened in September 2003 to serve young people and their families in the economically challenged neighborhood of 2,500 residents . In its first year, the center had over 300 participants in its programs and activities .

YMCA SPORTS AND RECREATION - These programs promote an appreciation of one's own worth. YMCA youth sports programs are based on a very simple formula: fun, fitness, and fair play . Every child plays one half of every game. YMCA youth sports programs also help to strengthen families . Parents coach teams and turn out, often with brothers and sisters, to watch kids play. Young people participating in sports build lifelong positive attitudes, habits of healthy exercise and good nutrition, and learn ways to have fun as adults .

Both adult and youth sports value cooperation over competition, fair play over winning at any cost, good feeling and good health over a good score, and good self-esteem over beating the opponent . The YMCA knows that with this approach everyone wins - undefeated in spirit, mind, and body .

The Youth Basketball League was co-sponsored by the Balise Motors in 2004, which enabled more young people to participate, and helped enhance community-police relations. Over 300 youths participated in youth basketball, t-ball, and soccer in 2004.

YMCA RESOURCES AND SERVICES - The YMCA offers permanent, single-room occupancy affordable housing for young people, the elderly, veterans, people on disability, and individuals recovering from some form of addiction.

The purpose is to provide a wholesome environment designed to foster good citizenship and sound character . A variety of services including referrals to appropriate social services, counseling, and use of the gym and pool are available.

The YMCA has 104 units that were completely renovated in 1998 .

YMCA INTERNATIONAL PROGRAMS - The YMCA is a worldwide movement . YMCA international programs promote international understanding through education, development, overseas opportunities, and leadership training in 130 countries around the world.

COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT - The YMCA serves the communities of Agawam, Chicopee, Longmeadow, Springfield, and West Springfield from our Springfield Branch (275 Chestnut Street, Springfield, MA), and the communities of East Longmeadow, Hampden, Ludlow, Monson, Palmer, Sixteen Acres, and Wilbraham for our Scantic Valley Branch (85 Post Office Park, Wilbraham, MA).

The Scantic Valley branch was a "non-facility" Y that utilized rented space throughout the community during 2003 to provide a full range of YMCA programs and services . A new 42,000 square foot facility that includes a zero-entry therapeutic warm water pool was opened in September 2004.

The YMCA has also played a major role in the redevelopment of the Lower Liberty Heights neighborhood in Springfield . Over $500,000 has been raised under YMCA leadership to renovate the Emily Bill Playground, renovate an abandoned bathhouse as a community center, and the construction of a water park. The Y offers programs at no charge to neighborhood residents throughout the school year . The YMCA also operates the "Summer in the Park" program at Emily Bill 9 :00 AM - 4:00 PM. Monday-Friday during the summer at no charge for neighborhood children .
