Bulletin Article Requests: Please email proposed bulletin articles to [email protected] by 6 pm, Wednesday, 10 days before the intended issue (earlier for holiday weekends).

We’re back in Ordinary Time, but things aren’t so ordi-nary. The COVID-19 pandemic is not over, although we move about a little easier with precautions. But COVID-19 is not the only pandemic we are dealing with. We are also forced to confront the pandemic nature of racism. Racism is a systemic pandemic, deeply rooted in every aspect of our American socie-ty. Solving it won’t occur in my lifetime, maybe not even my son’s. But we could perhaps start to do something about it at the point of Matthew’s gospel today. Jesus, in today’s gospel uses the simple phrase not once but three times, “do not be afraid”. Mat-thew tells us that Jesus told his disciples to be fearless in facing the world. That fearlessness Jesus talked about ought to be a mark of our Christian discipleship.

So how can we start to be unafraid to solve racism? We can start by calling it what it is – a sin. It was just announced recently that Merri-am-Webster’s Dictionary, founded in 1831, will update its definition of racism in response to a request from Ms. Kennedy Mitchum, a twenty-two year old Missouri woman who asked Webster to consider includ-ing the phrase “systemic racism” in its definition. I learned that rac-ism is systemic at least 50 years ago and even taught it as an activist in my 20s as part of undoing racism retreats. Ms. Mitchum was fear-less in her quest to email Webster’s about the inadequacy of the definition. Importantly, Webster seems fearless to no longer deny that racism has deep roots in our American history and in every facet of our society. Indeed our own government (our constitution) didn’t intend for blacks (slaves at that time) to ever be regarded even as citizens with the full dignity of human rights.

Fear (an unpleasant often strong emotion in anticipation of aware-ness or danger) can perhaps best be exemplified by Amy Cooper, the white woman who on reflex, called the police on a black man in Central Park, Christian Cooper (no relation), a bird watcher who simply asked her to follow the park rules to curb her dog. It was Ms. Cooper’s fear, or worse her phobia (an extreme or irrational fear of or aversion to something), that put her on automatic pilot to lever-age her privilege as a white woman. (Privilege - a right or immunity granted as a particular benefit, advantage or favor; a prerogative). As Fr. Bryan Massingale says in his video interview with America Me-dia, www.youtube.com/watch?v=ONiie2oYJCQ&feature=youtu.be Ms. Cooper modeled the dynamics of whiteness and privilege that sustend1 the entire system of racism by “…assuming her race would work in her benefit, assuming she would carry the presumption of in-nocence and that Mr. Cooper would carry the presumption of guilt…” Was it also Ms. Cooper’s ignorance (lack of knowledge or information) that caused her fear in the first place? Ignorance is no longer an excuse for fear as was demonstrated by Mr. Cooper who pulled the pin on the race grenade with his calm videotape of her rant.

Today, we know too much about racism in America not to act. America can no longer plead ignorance or fear. It’s time for a con-version – a conversion of heart and mind, and of the way we oper-ate. And as Catholics who profess to believe in the dignity of human life at all stages, it’s time to be honest with ourselves that inherent in racism (America’s original sin) is disrespect for life – black lives.

Fr. Massigngale says that his ministry is trying to “help the Church to catch up with God” to finally be a Church that gives all people of God, including those of us who are people of color, equal dignity of value and worth. But it will take being unafraid. It will take Fearless Discipleship. Phyllis Stone

Smile with Your Family

While having their evening dinner together, a little girl looked up at her father and asked, “Daddy, you're the boss in our family, right?" The father was very pleased to hear it and confident-ly replied, "Yes my little princess." The girl then continued, "That's because mommy put you in charge, right?" ☺ Dad: Son, if you keep pulling my hair, you will have to get off my shoulders. Son: But, Dad, I’m just trying to get my gum back! ☺ A Father’s Day card read: “Being a father can be expensive, time-consuming, frustrating, con-fusing and emotionally draining. Actually, it’s a lot like golf!”

Marriage Tune-Up

Father's Day: Think of how your life honors your father.

Also acknowledge the fathers who come by their role indirectly (foster and adoptive fathers, fathers-in-law, stepfathers, and those who have been like a father to you.) Honor an honorary father this week.

Parenting Tune-Up Teach your children the importance of appreciating their dad. Ask them to list what they like in their dad and ask them to express it in some concrete way.

Sunday Reflections

Father’s Role in Family & Society

According to the Catechism of the Catholic Church, the vital im-portance of the father’s role comes from the fact that, with his wife, he cooperates with God the Creator in bringing a new human life into the world. There is no power greater than that (#2367). (A few Biblical references to fathers: Genesis 2:24, Exodus 20:12, Ezekiel 19:19-20, Sirach 3:1 16, Matthew 19:16-22, John 1:14, 2 Cor. 6:16-18, Ephesians 6: 1-4, 1 Thess. 2:11 – 12).

Some recent studies have demonstrated how important a father is to his child's development. Children with fathers present have a lower rate of delinquency, drug and alcohol use, teen pregnancy, and so on, than those with absent fathers. The father's presence is also a significant positive factor in children’s getting a college edu-cation, finding a satisfying job, and making a lasting marriage. Psy-chotherapists today are saying that both parents are vitally im-portant to the stable development of their children; the mother's input is invaluable in the formative pre-adolescent years but the fa-ther's most important influence is at adolescence. Single mothers tell us that it is terribly difficult to teach their children about the meaning of God the Father Who seems so impersonal because their children have been abandoned by their natural fathers. Adoles-cent daughters long to hear from their fathers that they are beauti-ful and loved. In fact, a girl's choice of partner and satisfaction in marriage is often directly related to the relationship she has had with her father.

How God Made Dad!

God took the strength of a mountain, The majesty of a tree, The warmth of a summer sun, The calm of a quiet sea, The generous soul of nature, The comforting arm of night, The wisdom of ages, The power of the eagles’ flight, The joy of a spring morning, The faith of a mustard seed, And the depth of a family need. Then God combined these qualities And there was nothing more to add. He knew his masterpiece was complete And so he called it DAD. (Author unknown)

“Yes, if Daddy will hold Me.”

A little girl had somehow received a bad cut in the soft flesh of her eyelid. The doctor knew that some stitches were needed, but he also knew that because of the location of the cut, he should not use an anesthetic. He talked with the little girl and he told her what he must do… and asked her if she thought she could stand the touch of the needle without jumping. She thought for a moment, and then said simply, “I think I can if Daddy will hold me while you do it.” So the father took his little girl in his lap, steadied her head against his shoulder, and held her tightly in his arms. The surgeon then quickly did his work… and sewed up the cut in her eye-lid… and the little girl did not flinch. She just held on tight to her Father.

That’s a parable for us in our spiritual lives and a graphic reminder that whatever we have to face, we can hold on tight to our Fa-ther… and He will see us through. There’s a word for that… it’s called TRUST or FAITH. It’s surely what Jesus had in mind when he said, “Unless you become like a little child, you cannot enter the kingdom of God.”

Tribute to a Big-Hearted Dad

“Keep Them Worried and Anxious!”

C. S. Lewis wrote a book called The Screwtape Letters. "Screwtape" is a devil, a very accom-plished devil. Using any trickery he can, Screwtape turns people away from God. By his letters, Screwtape gives advice to Wormwood, his young nephew and apprentice, who is just learning the deceptive ways of devils. In one letter, Screwtape writes to Wormwood, "Keep them anxious, make certain they are worried about something." Re-

mind people about their fears. Why this advice? Being a devil, Screwtape wants to get people so focused on their fears that they forget God.

Today Jesus gives his apostles three reasons why they should not be worried or frightened. These are assurances for us too: First, He assured the apostles that no one will be able to prevent them from succeeding in their mission because God will not permit evil to win. Second, enemies can kill the body, which dies all too soon anyway, but have no power over the soul. Only God has power over eternity. The gospel identifies two fears that the apostles had: fear of false accusation and conviction, and fear of bodily harm and death. Tradition has it that almost all the apostles died the violent death of martyrdom. Some of them ended up being crucified on the cross, like Peter and Andrew; beheaded, like James and Paul; flayed alive, like Bartholomew; or thrown into a cauldron of boiling oil, like John. And the third reason why we should not be afraid is God's compassionate love. We are more important to God than sparrows. Jesus said, "So do not be afraid; you are worth much more than many sparrows." In other words, the perfect antidote for fear is trust in God. God is our shelter and strength, always ready to help in times of trouble. So we will not be afraid… (Psalm 45:1, 2. Confer also Psalm 27:1,2, Psalm 91:1,2)

Giraffes Afraid of Crossing!

Among the many wonders at the world famous San Diego Zoo is the giraffe compound. Enclosed in a natural habitat are several of these magnificent ani-mals. They are every bit as tall and graceful as one might imagine. But they are far more massive and muscular than expected. Tall somehow seems to imply thin. However, these great beasts are any-thing but skinny. Their necks are thicker and their legs shorter and more powerful than one antici-pates. It is not difficult to see why one kick could send an ambitious lion packing. Yet these massive, stately animals are enclosed in a small compound that seems far too restricting for their size and power. But no cage contains them. There are no bars or walls. There is but a simple, waterless moat, no deep-er than the beast's knee, which circles the com-

pound. Freedom is but a mere two steps away. But they are trapped. All of them are. For not one of them will take the risk of stepping down and across for fear of breaking its neck.

I wonder how many of us are limited like that by our fears. Fear of rejection... fear of failure...fear of looking foolish...fear of being hurt...fear of being alone... fear of intimacy...fear of being taken advantage of ...fear of change...fear of being criti-cized. "Do not fear!" "Do not be afraid!" It is the advice of Jesus to his disciples in today’s gospel.

Not tomorrow,

not next week,

Now is the time to

Rise up

From the ashes of

Pandemic 2020.

Let the embers of the virus

Spark a new Spirit,

Setting the world ablaze.

Attitudes of compassion, kindness

Become the law of the land.

Let the layers of goodness

Rise to the surface

Of the wounded hearts

Of our brother's and sisters.

Heal our nation Now buried in fear.

Rise up! Rise up! My friends!

Above the pain, suffering

Above the fear!

Clothed in Hope,

Let us Build a New Creation!

Questions/Reflections

How can I contribute to the new

creation?

Sit in prayer around this question.

Remember, any little thing matters.

St. Matthias Music Ministry - Still ready to serve and ready to sing! We have all been reading about the challenges ahead for Music Ministry as we enter into the next phase of our restoration of Masses with a congregation in the next few weeks. Recognizing that song brings comfort, inspiration and strength, how do we nurture our congregation’s participation while providing an environ-ment that minimizes the potential spread of COVID -19?

Our plan at St. Matthias is to proceed with “noble simplicity.” Less music now, more when it is safe to do so. Any adaptations will be rescinded when the risk of transmission within our community is low.

As the Metuchen Diocesan Resource for Pastoral Musicians during the Phases of Restoration of Masses with a Congregation states:

“Song speaks deep within the human spirit. Sacred music is an important part of the Liturgy and allows us to enter more fully into the praise of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.”

Our song will sound different for a while, but it will still be a beautiful expression of our faith. Our music ministers are still ready to serve and ready to sing, as soon as it is safe to do so. Singing one verse of a hymn or song behind a mask will have to do for now, but we look forward to the time when we can once again sing to-gether in full voice!

In the meantime, check out our St. Matthias Music Ministry You Tube Channel (see page 2). We have lots of beautiful renditions of your favorite hymns and songs to choose from.

?? A Frequent Question ?? We have been asked several times if we are planning to continue livestreaming our Sun-day mass once we are back to celebrating all Masses inside the church. The answer is yes. We understand that many will not feel comfortable returning to a full building im-mediately after restrictions are lifted. It may take some time for everyone to feel comfort-able physically joining together as one com-munity. We currently plan to continue livestreaming a Sunday mass when we return to a full weekend schedule.

A 2020 Version of The Beatitudes

Sister Amata Shina, OSF, sent us this prayer which was composed

by Rohan Tulloch, a Jesuit from Jamaica.

Blessed are those who stayed indoors, for they protected others. Blessed are the unemployed for they recognized their dependence on God. Blessed are the postal workers and delivery persons who brought us essential needs. Blessed are the front line workers, who stood between us and the grave — May they see the face of God. Blessed are the garbage collectors, who when faced with mountains of rubbish, still could discern the handiwork of God. Blessed are the single parents who kept on being responsible 24/7. God does not forget them. Blessed are those who are alone, may they never forget they are God’s children.

Welcome Back to Mass!

We are happy to begin welcoming everyone back in person. We know this process will take some time and we are commit-ted to continuing to journey with you, both in person and online.

Here is a list of upcoming Masses and Drive-thru Communions that we are currently planning. Please be sure to check our website and also YouTube channel for the guidelines and how to proceed.

We can accommodate up to 50 people inside the church. Our overflow space will be the cafeteria, where we will have the liturgy livestreamed. The cafeteria will also be limited to 50 people. Once we reach the 100-person mark, we ask that you livestream the liturgy on your phone from inside your car in the parking lot. Communion will be available at the end of the Mass, and people will exit the building immediately after-wards.

We are grateful to our Pastoral Council Task Force. They have done a wonderful job looking at many issues and addressing them, in order to make this a safe and prayerful experience for everyone.

Holy Hour with Benediction You are invited to join us this Friday, June 19, at 9 am in the church (maximum of 50 people). This Holy Hour with Bene-diction is in honor of the Feast of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus. We are hoping to also livestream the Holy Hour. Please check our YouTube channel, www.youtube.com/c/StMatthiasSomersetNJ at 9 am on Friday.

If you are unable to come to church, please continue to join us online for our weekend Mass, starting at 5 pm on

Saturdays, on our YouTube Channel.

If you do come to St. Matthias, please always follow all safety protocols including wearing a mask at all times

and practicing social distancing. More details are on our website, www.stmatthias.net

Discovering God: Formation

Is Your Life Like A Jigsaw Puzzle?

by Sister Amata Shina, OSF

Any time that you happen to walk through Villa Claire, a section of Monocacy

Manor in Bethlehem, Pa., you’ll notice that there is a puzzle in pro-gress on the table. Many Sisters stop there and try to find some of the missing puzzle pieces. Since we are confined to our Villa space during this pandemic, we have time to do things we might otherwise not. We recently com-pleted two 1,000-piece puzzles (pictured above). As we thought about it, we realized that our lives are just like jigsaw puzzles. I like putting jigsaw puzzles together. They are time-consuming but, at the same time, they provide a great lesson in patience and per-sistence. Every piece counts toward making the finished puzzle the beautiful picture that it is. Just like each piece of the jigsaw puzzle is important to having a finished picture, the same is true with every human trait that we pos-sess. We all have negative and positive traits … things we like about ourselves and dislike about others. When we know how to use eve-rything we have, we can embrace the fact that each puzzle piece is unique and very valuable to completing the puzzle. Just like each puzzle piece needs to interlock with its compliment to fit together, the same is true for us. God has the right pieces to make the puzzle of your life fit. Our lives are truly masterpieces! The only difference between our lives and the jigsaw puzzle is that our lives are not finished masterpieces. Our lives are always changing, but what does stay the same is that every trait that makes up our magnificent beings is always there. So, we are still masterpieces but not finished ones!

Being Good Stewards

Stewardship Reflection Jun 14, 2020 Feast of Corpus Christi

“Because there is one bread, we who are many are one body, for we all partake of the one bread.” (1 Corin-thians 10:17) As disciples of Jesus, we are called to lead holy lives and invite others to join us. Living a stewardship lifestyle, be-ing grateful and generous with our gifts, serves a twofold purpose. One, it helps build God’s kingdom here on earth. Two, it helps us strengthen each other’s relation-ship with God the Father, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit. It becomes our road map to Heaven. Let’s help each oth-er get there!
