Faith Sharing Questions Theme of this week’s Gospel: The Jews questioned Jesus’ origin because He said “He was the bread that came down from heaven,” yet they knew Him as the Son of Joseph and Mary. Adults: What do you think Jesus was trying to tell the Jews when He said He was the “living bread” that came down from heaven, and whoever eats this bread will live forever? Do you think they understood what He meant by “living bread?” What does “living bread” mean to you? Teens: Can you imagine how confused the followers of Jesus must have been when He said He was the “living bread?” What do you find confusing about your faith? Children: When you receive Holy Communion do you believe that Jesus is truly present in the host?

Dear Friends On the face of it, today's Second Reading seems simple enough, just try to love people. But Paul doesn't leave it there. In practical and pointed terms, he tells us what this kind of love looks like. It's not just a matter of avoiding "fury" or even its milder cousin "anger." There is no room for bitterness or shouting, either. Not even a hint of "malice." Instead, the love

Paul is calling us to is marked by kindness and compassion—and forgiveness.

Forgiveness. That's the linchpin. Our ability to show compassion and kindness stands and falls on whether we are able—or at least willing to try—to forgive people who have wronged us. Without forgiveness, our love is conditional. Of course I love you, but only if you are good to me. The moment you hurt me, all bets are off.

That's not how Jesus loves us. His love is unconditional. There is never a moment that He doesn't love us. Even when we are mired in a sin that we can't seem to overcome, He is still completely committed to us. But that doesn't mean He is indifferent to our sin. It means He longs for us to repent so that we can receive His forgiveness and healing. And He asks us to treat one another with the same mercy and love.

This isn't always easy. Sometimes it feels down right impossible. Some sins seem just too hard to forgive. But if anyone knows that, it's Jesus. That's why He is so patient. He promises to love us, even if we are struggling to forgive someone. He knows that His love can soften our hearts and give us the grace to show mercy.

Paul told the Ephesians to live in the same kind of love that Jesus had when He "handed himself over for us". Jesus never gave up on us, even when it meant going to the cross. So never give up on yourself—-or anyone else. God Bless Deacon Bob

Saint Lawrence of Rome Lawrence was from an area of Spain that is just south of the Pyrenees. He was born in 225 AD. He met the future pope, Sixtus, who was teaching in Zaragoza, Spain. When Sixtus was made pope in 257 and went to Rome, he took Lawrence with him. Lawrence, then 32, was ordained a deacon by Sixtus and was made the first of the seven deacons of Rome. For this he was called the “Archdeacon of Rome” and was responsible for the treasury of the Church, and for distributing alms to the poor.

Pope Sixtus and 6 of his deacons were arrested during

Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Ordinary Time, Cycle C We interrupt our normal progression through the Sundays of Ordinary Time to observe the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary which falls on August 15th:

“As we believe that Jesus was the first to rise from the dead, so we believe he has also received his mother first into eternity. Eastern Traditions called this event the “Dormition” or “sleeping” of Mary, indicating that she did not die but was taken to heaven as if asleep. Pope Pius XII declared the bodily assumption of Mary into heaven as a dogma of the church in 1950.” (from Sourcebook for Sundays and Seasons)

There are readings for a “vigil” Mass (the evening before) and for Mass on the actual day. Gospel Reading (Vigil: Luke 11:27-28, Day: Luke 1:39-56): Neither the Gospels nor any other book in the Bible contain a passage about what happened to Mary at the end of her life. The Gospel Reading for the Vigil Mass has someone proclaiming (to Jesus) that “blessed is the womb that carried you and the breasts at which you nursed.” The Gospel of the Mass of the Day is the account of Mary’s visitation to Elizabeth. Both women are pregnant, Elizabeth with the last prophet of the Old Testament era, and Mary with Jesus, the first “prophet” of the New Testament era. Perhaps this story is meant to express a teaching about the reverence Christianity should have towards Judaism. First Reading (Vigil: I Chronicles 15:3-4, 15-16; 16:1-2, Day: Revelation 11:19, 12:1-6, 10): The Ark of the Covenant of the Old Testament has long been seen as a symbol or even “prototype” of Mary and the reading from 1 Chronicles was chosen for that reason. The reading from Revelation describes the woman “clothed with the sun” who gives birth to a son, an image associated with both the Church and with Mary. Second Reading (Vigil: I Corinthians 15:54-57, Day: I Corinthians 15:20-27): The reading for both the vigil and the Mass of the day speak about the resurrection. I Corinthians, Chapter 15 offers a very developed theology/teaching about the Christian belief regarding death, Christ’s resurrection from the dead, and the resurrection from the dead in general. Various passages from Chapter 15 are often used at Funeral Masses. Chapter 15 in its entirety is worth a slow and thoughtful read. It describes the foundational experience of the resurrection, which is foundational to our Catholic Faith.

Catholic Traditions Catechism of the Catholic Church Each week we will present a passage from the Catechism of the Catholic Church. The Catechism is organized into four major parts: The Faith Professed (The Creed), The Faith Celebrated (Liturgy and Sacraments), The Faith Lived (The Moral Life), and The Faith Prayed (Christian Prayer). All are encouraged to read and study the Catechism.

the persecution under the Emperor Valerian. Following the death of Sixtus and the deacons, Lawrence was ordered to gather all of the riches of the Church and present it to the Prefect, or administrator, of Rome. Lawrence is reported to have sent the chalice used by Christ in the Last Supper to his hometown in Spain, and then took the rest of the riches and distributed them to the poor. When ordered to appear before the Prefect, who demanded the riches, Lawrence showed him the poor and said that these were the riches of the Church. He is reported to have said, “The Church is truly rich, far richer than your emperor.” He was condemned to death.

The remark that he made so infuriated the Prefect, that he had a fire prepared and had a gridiron placed over it, and began to roast Lawrence. After he was on the gridiron for a while it is said that he told his executioner, “Turn me over, I’m done on this side.” He was martyred on August 10, 258 making August 10th his feast day.

Saint Lawrence is one of the most famous saints in the calendar. He has several churches in Rome named for him and he is a patron of Rome. He is the patron of cooks and chefs, for obvious reasons, and for comedians. He is also the patron of librarians, students, miners, tanners and the poor. He is the patron of the country of Sri Lanka, of many cities and the largest estuary in the world, the Saint Lawrence River (as well as the adjacent Laurentian Mountains).
