Dear Parishioners and Friends of Ascension,
Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA) “Taste and see the goodness of the Lord.” (Psalm 34:9) We will recite this phrase during the Responsorial Psalm for three of the four Sunday Masses this month, as we focus on the Eucharist, the bread from heaven that Christ gives us at each Mass. Jesus continues to be God with us, Emmanuel, when we receive Him in the Eucharist. He keeps His promise to be with us always, even to the end of time. (Matthew 28:20) One of the important ways that we taste God’s goodness is in the sacraments. God imparts His grace, His Presence, to us through the sacraments. If you’re a Catholic adult but never made your First Communion or Confirmation; if you’re Christian from another denomination considering becoming Catholic; if you’re from another faith or searching for faith, please consider joining RCIA at Ascension. Taste and see…RCIA stands for Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults. It is a faith sharing journey for adults who are considering becoming Catholic or who would like to receive the sacraments of initiation - Baptism, Eucharist and Confirmation. This journey has roots in the early Church. RCIA meetings include interactive discussions about the different aspects of the Catholic faith. Together, we can question and support each other as we seek to learn more about what it means to be Catholic. Our meetings are led by parishioners and we often have special guests who present on topics related to Christianity and Catholicism. I have been blessed to be a member of the RCIA team in Ascension parish for the past few years. Last year, 10 adults participated in RCIA at Ascension and received sacraments at the Easter Vigil. Taste and see…RCIA at Ascension meets every Tuesday night at 7p.m., beginning September 11th, 2018. Meetings last about an hour and a half and we meet in the Church rectory. Please join us for what promises to be a spiritually rewarding journey. Queridos Feligreses y Amigos de la Ascensión,
Rito de Iniciación Cristiana para Adultos (RICA)
“Gusten y vean qué bueno es el Señor.” (Salmo 34:9)
Recitaremos esta frase en el Salmo Responsorial en tres de las cuatro misas dominicales en este mes, mientras enfocamos en la eucaristía, el pan del cielo que Cristo nos da en cada misa. Jesús continúa siendo Dios con nosotros, Emanuel, cuando lo recibimos en la eucaristía. Él cumple su promesa de estar siempre con nosotros, hasta el final del tiempo (Mateo 28: 20).
Una de las maneras especiales en que probamos la bondad de Dios es en los sacramentos. Dios nos imparte su gracia, su presencia, a través de los sacramentos. Si usted es un adulto católico pero nunca ha hecho su primera comunión o la confirmación; o, si es cristiano de otra denominación y está considerando hacerse católico; si pertenece a otra fe o está buscando la fe, por favor, considere unirse a RICA en la Ascensión.

Highlights from the 2017-2018 Ascension Men’s Shelter Season
Father Kearney often reminds us that the strength of our community rests on the level of support we provide to those most vulnerable amongst us. It is in this spirit that Ascen-sion’s Men’s Homeless Shelter kicked off the 2017-2018 sea-son. And this year’s goal was simple – support as many men as possible to get back on their feet. It is not surprising that this season was one of our best! The numbers speak for themselves 82 nights 1,010 guests served On average, 13 guests per night and once we served 21
in a night 87% of the nights we had 10 or more guests It is through a broad network of volunteers who were gen-erous with their time, skills, and resources that we were able to support the men of the Shelter. Often times, it was a kind word, a smile, or listening ear that helped the men feel con-nected and comforted. Practically speaking, each Saturday and Sunday volunteers prepared a hearty meal, set out com-fortable beds for each and every guest, stayed over with the men, and sent them off with a healthy breakfast. We were also blessed with donations of hats, scarves, gloves, shower shoes, and toiletries, as well as monetary donations. Thank you to all of our wonderful volunteers and those who have donated. The Shelter reopens in September and we look forward to seeing some familiar faces and welcoming new ones with open arms. The Shelter is open on Saturdays and Sundays from September through June and we would love your par-ticipation and engagement

Es a través de una amplia red de voluntarios que fueron generosos con su tiempo, habilidades y recursos que pudi-mos apoyar a los hombres del Refugio. Muchas veces, fue una palabra amable, una sonrisa o un oído atento lo que ayudó a los hombres a sentirse conectados y consolados. En términos prácticos, los voluntarios de los sábados y domin-gos preparaban una buena comida, colocaban camas cómodas para todos y cada uno de los invitados, se queda-ban con los hombres y los enviaban con un desayuno sa-ludable. También fuimos bendecidos con donaciones de sombreros, bufandas, guantes, zapatos de ducha y artículos de tocador, así como donaciones monetarias. Gracias a to-dos nuestros maravillosos voluntarios y aquellos que han donado. The Shelter vuelve a abrir sus puertas en septiembre y es-peramos ver algunas caras familiares y dar la bienvenida a otras nuevas con los brazos abiertos. The Shelter está ab-ierto los sábados y domingos de septiembre a junio y nos
encantaría su participación y compromiso.

Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA)
The RCIA at Ascension is a faith-sharing group accompany-ing adults in their preparation for the reception of Baptism, Eucharist and Confirmation. This process includes interac-tive discussions about the different aspects of the Catholic faith. If you are considering becoming a Catholic or are already baptized and would like to receive the sacraments of 1st Communion and/or Confirmation, the RCIA is the right place for you. Sacraments can be received at the Easter Vigil. RCIA meets every Tuesday night at 7 PM, beginning September 11th, 2018 in the Church rectory. The RCIA also welcomes all Catholics who received the Sacraments, and seek to revive their faith and share their views of the Catholic Church.
