En la demostracion los que hablaron presentaron cuatros demandas:

1) La liberacion de Puerto Rico Ahora. Esto tambien quiere decir que queremos que las 100 bases de tropas militares de e.e. u.u. que ocupan 14% de nuastras tierras sean sacadas inmediatamente. Tambien queremos que terminen con el servicio militar obligatorio de Puertorriqueoos.

Churches and Priests and all those that supposedly commit themsalves to the mission of educating people by preaching the Bible, have rec:ieved a great deal of respect from the people and legitimacy from the·establishment. The role of the church has been that of an institution which gives spiritual strength to the oppressed in order ~ keep them living under misery. The role of all churches no matter whet domination has been to distort the realities of the world and to help create the situation whereby people are taken away from the reality of the world allowing the rich ruling class to control the people. In order for us to be able to understand how the church has been oppresing our people, we

· must first check out the Party's history (our experiences) with the church and the experiences of all Third World people.

History shows that after the Spanish raped our mothers and sifters. worked to death and mu rdered our people, they moved in with the Bible to "Christianize" the IO-Called sawage so that they will accept the _ ordar without opposition and become passive preventing them from ol'llllllizing themselves to oppose the. foreign" ord'" The religion of our ancestors was not Methodist.Lutheran, Presbyterian or Catholic, but a reI!,Blon besed on the people, in the interests of the pueblo not the capitalist and lying politicians.

Why has the Bible been so distorted by historians and the so-called religious leadars that even the basic principle of religion which is to "'e the poor people has been forgotten. The churches are more concerned with how many buildings they own, how do they look and mainly with how marli's.evagei' they have been able to pacify. When the Netional Guard inveded Puerto Rico in 1960, why didn't the "holy rollin" call a strike of paepIe to oppose this barbaric action .C4iawaritted by the u.... But rather they all

stood by while our people got massacred and dragged off to jail and to this day the church continues to teach us to be non-violent while our paople continue to get murdered in the jails (Julio Roldan. Jose Perez and others) and suffer from a thousand different forms of oppression and see no change in the future.

They are guilty of the highest crime for teaching the people something which is not practiced because to teach someone to be non-violent while getting their ass kicked is like telling someone to put a gun on their head and to pull the trigger. The 6th point of the YOUNG LORDS PARTY 13-Point Platform and Program states, "We want community control of our institutions and land. We wa.nt control of our communities by our people and programs to guarantee that all institu tions :' serve the needs of ou r people. People's control of police, health services, churches, schools, transportation and welfare are needed. We wallt an end to attacks on our land by urban renewal, highway destruction, and university corporations.

.LAND BELONGS TO ALL THE PEOPLE! On the base of this the former First Spanish Methodist Church has been forced by the people to become an institution that is functioning in the interest of the people. No longer will it be an institution which teaches us to be passive and love our enemies like Nixon, Ag_, Mitchell, the military and the big capitalist. But now it will teach our people to resist and fight them until we gain control of our.own destiny.

At this point we are running programs like the Day Care Canter, the Breakfast Program, Conmunlty Political Education Classes. and the Julio Roldan Defense Canter for the people. Recently we had a Free

..I."t. Clothing Drive' in which over 150 of our people came. The congregation and the higher ups in the Methodist Church have changed their original decision to sell the building. They . passed a resolution that no program or any kind of activity will be running in the church unless they control it. What they are saying is that they will continue to do what ever they please and by doing so they are denying the right of self-determination of the people. We are not asking we are telling the Methodist Church to either give us space in" the church to run the Julio Roldan Defense Center for the people or to dig into their pockets to get us a place that will be suitable for the types of programs and organiZing that has been done from the church. We don't want to hear how poor and in debt they are because if they have enough money to have a

convention in Los Angeles and in the Hilton Hotel which costs about 160 to 200,000 dollars and own property around the world one building will not cause the Methodist Church to go out of business.

Before they take any action against the YOUNG LORDS PARTY, who are running the programs, they better take into consideration that the majority of our people are angry and will no longer sit by and watch their brothers and sistars get ripped off while fighting in their interests.

Republic of New Africa (RNA) were att8,nc:ting a convention at Detroit's New

Desde Octubre 26, el sector de Newark del PARTIDO de los YOUNG LORDS ha estado organizando y participando en una huelga de las rentas. Nosotros hemos venido a envolvernos en esta huelga cuando vimos las condiciones en que nuestra gente esta forzada a vivir, y nosotros decidimos cuando nos 10 pidieron ayudar a los inquilinos del edificio a hacer algo acerca de estas condiciones.

La gente en los edificios estaba pagando rentas rediculamente altas por apartarnentos que no satisfacen las necesidades humanas. Llamamos a una reunion de inquilinos y planeamos una accion en contra de los aministradores racistas y duenos de estos edificios.

Nosotros vamos a hacer una accion en los bolsillos de estos puercos racistas que ni siqu iera viven en nustras comunidades. Sabemos que estos duenos deedificios solo les inportan sus intereses, que no arreglan nada en 10'5 edificios, ni siquiera las ventanas 0

Since October 26, the Newark Branch ot the YOUNG LORDS PARTY has been organizing and participating in a rent strike. We became involved in the rent strike because we grew tired of seeing the conditions our people were forced to liva under. So we moved to organized the tenants to do something about these conditions. ridiculously high rents for apartments that are not fit for human beings. We called a meeting of the tenants and pll'nned out an action against the slumlord who owns the building. We plenned an action to ~it the pocketbook of the greedly sfumlord wHo doesn't even live in our community. We understarll! that landlords profit by not making .repairs and keeping the buildings in good shape. They don't want to fix broken windows or pipes and don't want to give steam or hot water--these services cost money and they don't want to cut into their profits.

We explained to our people that we do not believe that one person should own the homes of other people. Why do we work hard all our lives to pay rent for a broken-down apartment while some crook takes our money, refuses to give any services, and goes on long vacations while we are slaving? We shouldn't have to pay rent so that someone else can make profits. The buildings belong to those who live in them. Rent should be lowered and the money should be put into a fund tbat will' be used .. w,' meke ell the ~ry repairs. W. don't need slumlords.
