Dado a conocer a

31. Introduction to Islam Ibrahim Sumer, Ph.D.

This course is an introductory study of the history and doctrine of Islam. It covers the historical foundations of the religion, that is, the Qur’anic revelation to the Prophet Muhammad and the meaning of being a Muslim, what they believe and practice. The course is structured for developing an understanding of Islam as a set of phenomena. Students are expected to gain an overview of the historical foundations that these phenomena depend on, learn about how and why Muslims believe and behave in certain ways. What makes such an understanding significant is the need of knowledge about the global neighborhood since today’s world of globalization makes “aliens” neighbors.

Ibrahim Sumer, Ph.D., is an adjunct faculty at Religious Studies Program at the University of Houston. He has been teaching Islamic and interfaith courses such as Islamic Spirituality, Muslim-Christian Relations, and Stories From the Bible and the Quran. He also serves as a religion consultant on voluntary basis at The Dialog Insti-tute, a Houston-based non-profit organization. Dr. Sumer taught Comparative Histo-ry of Religions, particularly Judaism, Christianity and Buddhism at Harran University Divinity School.

19. The Celebration of Sunday: Why We Do What We Do, and How To Do It Dr. Patricia J. Hughes

Parish ministers can engage in the New Evangelization if we deeply understand what happens at Mass, and why it happens to begin with. Consider who comes—and who isn’t there. Why should people celebrate Sunday—and what can we do to invite them in? This course intends to enliven and support liturgical ministers, those who serve on parish worship committees, catechists, liturgy planners, music ministers, and parish staff members. Expect a review of basic Liturgy 101, moving to dialogue about how to shape worship that the People of God are attracted to and engaged in. Faith sustains what human beings can only imagine! Dr. Patricia Hughes has ministered in the Church for over 45 years, initially as a parish organist and accompanist. She earned an undergraduate degree in Elemen-tary Education, and later graduate study includes a Masters in Pastoral Theology from Loyola University (New Orleans), and a Masters in Divinity and a Doctorate in Ministry from the Catholic Theological Union (Chicago).
