Welcome to St. John the Baptist (Dixie) Anglican Church

…or, more simply “St. John’s Dixie”

Thank you for joining us today! Whatever your age, background, or orientation, whether you are

married, divorced or single, with children or without, are a life-long Anglican, from another

Christian tradition, totally new to the faith or “just looking” you are very welcome here!

Our Vision

St. John’s Dixie is a diverse and inclusive Anglican community of faith, dedicated to Jesus Christ

with passion, through spiritual growth and inspiring worship.

Our Mission

Together we empower one another in active and engaging ministry to share the transforming

Good News of Jesus Christ, by building loving and supportive relationships.

Our Values

Faith. + Celebration + Hospitality + Respect + Accountability

Our goal is to be a G.I.F.T. to one another and to this community by

Growing In Faith Together

We’d also like you to know…

Order of Service - You’ll find everything you need for the worship service printed in this colourful

leaflet – prayers, scripture readings and hymns, along with instructions in italics, so you’ll know

when to stand, sit or kneel. If you have difficulty standing or kneeling, it’s completely ok to remain

seated. Announcements about events and opportunities within our community are listed in the back

of the leaflet, along with contact information for our church.

Children - Children and infants are most welcome. We have a children’s program for younger

kids that takes place in the rooms over the Parish Hall during the service. They return to the

sanctuary at the time of Communion. Children are also free to stay with you during the service. If

your child becomes fussy or your baby is in need of feeding or changing, don’t worry! Our sides

person at the back of the church can direct you to the Payton Room, where you can privately care

for your baby while still hearing the service through a loudspeaker. Please don’t be embarrassed

if your baby cries or your children get fidgety. We understand that children make noise and move

around.

Holy Communion - Those who have been baptized in any Christian church, including children,

are welcome to receive communion. If you have not been baptized yet or do not wish to receive the

bread and wine, you are welcome to come to the altar rail for a blessing. Simply cross your hands

over your chest to alert the priest you wish to receive a blessing.

We have seen his star in the east. Al le- lu- ia!-

And have come to wor ship- him. Al le- lu- ia!-

Processional Hymn: #385 - “WORSHIP THE LORD IN THE BEAUTY OF HOLINESS” All sing

Worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness; bow down before him, his glory proclaim;

gold of obedience and incense of lowliness bring, and adore him: the Lord is his name!

Fear not to enter his courts in the slenderness of the poor wealth thou canst reckon as thine;

truth in its beauty and love in its tenderness, these are the offerings to lay on his shrine.

These though we bring them in trembling and fearfulness, he will accept for the name that is dear,

mornings of joy give for evenings of tearfulness, trust for our trembling, and hope for our fear.

Worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness; bow down before him, his glory proclaim;

gold of obedience and incense of lowliness bring, and adore him: the Lord is his name!

The Magi are placed in the Creche

Obeisance Before the Living Creche

Priest:

All:

A moment of silence is observed as all kneel before the creche

Priest: Let us pray. O God the Father,

All: who by the shining of a star guided the Magi to behold your Son: Show us

your heavenly light, and give us grace to follow until we find him, and in

finding him, rejoice. And grant that as they presented gold, frankincense,

and myrrh, we now may bring him the offering of a loving heart, an adoring

spirit, and an obedient will; for his honour, and for your glory, O God most

high. Amen.

The Gathering of the Community Please stand

Leader: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God,

and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, be with you all.

People: And also with you.

The Collect for Purity

Leader: Almighty God,

All: to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are

hidden. Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy

Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy

name; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Collect of the Day Please kneel or be seated

Leader: Eternal God, who by a star led wise men to the worship of your Son. Guide by

your light the nations of the earth, that the whole world may know your glory;

through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,

one God, now and for ever.

All: Amen.

The Proclamation of the Word Please be seated

Reader: A Reading from the Prophesy of Isaiah.

Arise, shine; for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord has risen upon you. For

darkness shall cover the earth, and thick darkness the peoples; but the Lord will arise upon

you, and his glory will appear over you. Nations shall come to your light, and kings to the

brightness of your dawn. Lift up your eyes and look around; they all gather together, they

come to you; your sons shall come from far away, and your daughters shall be carried on

their nurses' arms. Then you shall see and be radiant; your heart shall thrill and rejoice,

because the abundance of the sea shall be brought to you, the wealth of the nations shall

come to you. A multitude of camels shall cover you, the young camels of Midian and

Ephah; all those from Sheba shall come. They shall bring gold and frankincense, and shall

proclaim the praise of the Lord.

Reader: The word of the Lord. Isaiah 60.1-6

People: Thanks be to God. A moment of silence is observed

Psalm Paraphrase : #116 - “YOUR KINGDOM COME” Please stand and sing

"Your kingdom come" – on bended knee the passing ages pray;

and faithful souls have yearned to see on earth that kingdom's day.

And lo, already on the hills the flags of dawn appear.

Gird up your loins, you prophet souls; proclaim the day is near:

the day in whose clear shining light all wrong shall stand revealed,

when justice shall be throned in might, and every hurt be healed;

when knowledge, hand in hand with peace, shall walk the earth abroad –

the day of perfect righteousness, the promised day of God

Reader: A Reading from the Letter of Paul to the Ephesians.

This is the reason that I Paul am a prisoner for Christ Jesus for the sake of you Gentiles -

for surely you have already heard of the commission of God's grace that was given me for

you, and how the mystery was made known to me by revelation, as I wrote above in a few

words, a reading of which will enable you to perceive my understanding of the mystery of

Christ. In former generations this mystery was not made known to humankind, as it has

now been revealed to his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit: that is, the Gentiles have

become fellow heirs, members of the same body, and sharers in the promise in Christ Jesus

through the gospel. Of this gospel I have become a servant according to the gift of God's

grace that was given me by the working of his power. Although I am the very least of all

the saints, this grace was given to me to bring to the Gentiles the news of the boundless

riches of Christ, and to make everyone see what is the plan of the mystery hidden for ages

in God who created all things; so that through the church the wisdom of God in its rich

variety might now be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly places. This

was in accordance with the eternal purpose that he has carried out in Christ Jesus our Lord,

in whom we have access to God in boldness and confidence through faith in him.

Reader: The word of the Lord. Ephesians 3.1-12

People: Thanks be to God. A moment of silence is observed

Glo ry- to you, Lord Je sus- Christ.

Sequence Hymn: (Tune #543) - “ONCE LONG AGO” Please stand & sing

The first two verses are sung before the Gospel

Once long ago, the wise men sought a king —A little child.

They brought him gifts so they could honor him; perhaps he smiled!

How can we honor Christ with what we bring?

How can we now give presents to our king?

We seek you, Christ, and far away we hear a child's cry.

We live with war, with constant daily fear, as loved ones die.

Christ, can we honor you with what we bring?

Can deeds for peace be gifts to you, our king?

The last two verses will be sung; after the Gospel.

We seek you, Christ, and close at home we see a child who's poor.

His family tries to pay for food and heat, but both cost more.

Christ, can we honor you with what we bring?

Can deeds of mercy make you smile, our king?

As we love neighbors, Christ, we also show our love for you.

When we serve those we may not even know, we serve you, too.

Now may we see what you would have us bring:

Our love for neighbors honors you, our king.

The Gospel

Leader: The Lord be with you. People: And also with you.

Leader: The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew.

People:

In the time of King Herod, after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, wise men from the

East came to Jerusalem, asking, "Where is the child who has been born king of the Jews?

For we observed his star at its rising, and have come to pay him homage." When King

Herod heard this, he was frightened, and all Jerusalem with him; and calling together all

the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Messiah was to

be born. They told him, "In Bethlehem of Judea; for so it has been written by the prophet:

Praise to you, Lord Je sus- Christ.

'And you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah;

for from you shall come a ruler who is to shepherd my people Israel. '" Then Herod secretly

called for the wise men and learned from them the exact time when the star had appeared.

Then he sent them to Bethlehem, saying, "Go and search diligently for the child; and when

you have found him, bring me word so that I may also go and pay him homage." When

they had heard the king, they set out; and there, ahead of them, went the star that they had

seen at its rising, until it stopped over the place where the child was. When they saw that

the star had stopped, they were overwhelmed with joy. On entering the house, they saw the

child with Mary his mother; and they knelt down and paid him homage. Then, opening

their treasure chests, they offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. And having

been warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they left for their own country by another

road.

Leader: The Gospel of Christ. Matthew 2.1-12

People:

Sermon Please be seated

The Nicene Creed Please stand

Leader: Let us confess our faith as we say,

All: We believe in one God, the Father, the almighty, maker of heaven and earth,

of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only

Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light,

true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father.

Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down

from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the

Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius

Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in

accordance with the scriptures; he ascended into heaven, and is seated at the

right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and

the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the

Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father.

All: With the Father and the Son he is worshipped and glorified. He has spoken

through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.

We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the

resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Prayers of the People Please kneel or be seated

Leader: In joy and humility let us pray to the creator of the universe, responding to the

invitation “hear us, O Lord,” singing:

Leader: By the good news of our salvation brought to Mary of the mystery of the Word

made flesh, hear us, O Lord.

All: Lord, grant us peace.

Leader: By the manifestation of the King of glory to the shepherds and magi; we pray

for the church that it may manifest Christ to the world, especially….hear us, O

Lord.

All: Lord, grant us peace.

Leader: By the submission of the maker of the world to Mary and Joseph of Nazareth;

we pray that all nations may submit themselves with humility to the love and

peace of Jesus Christ, hear us, O Lord.

All: Lord, grant us peace.

Leader: By the baptism of the Son of God in the river Jordan, we pray for those who are

sick and suffering and needing the anointing of your healing and life-giving

Spirit….hear us, O Lord.

All: Lord, grant us peace.

Leader: We pray for those who have died, that they may enter into your kingdom….and

that the kingdoms of this world may become the kingdom of our Lord and

Saviour Jesus Christ; hear us, O Lord.

All: Lord, grant us peace.

Lord, grant us peace.

Leader: Almighty God,

All: you have given us grace at this time with one accord to make our common

supplications to you, and you have promised through your well-beloved

Son that when two or three are gathered together you will hear their

requests. Fulfil now our desires and petitions, as may be best for us,

granting us in this world knowledge of your truth, and in the age to come

eternal life; for you, Father, are good and loving, and we glorify you

through your Son Jesus Christ our Lord, in the Holy Spirit, now and for

ever. Amen

Confession and Absolution Please kneel or be seated

Leader: Dear friends in Christ, God is steadfast in love and infinite in mercy; he welcomes

sinners and invites them to his table. Let us confess our sins, confident in God’s

forgiveness.

Leader: Most merciful God,

All: we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by

what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved

you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves.

We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus

Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us, that we may delight in your will,

and walk in your ways, to the glory of your name. Amen.

Priest: Almighty God have mercy upon you, pardon and deliver you from all your sins,

confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and keep you in eternal life; through

Jesus Christ our Lord.

People: Amen.

The Peace Please stand

Priest: The peace of the Lord be always with you.

People: And also with you.

Offertory Hymn: “WE THREE KINGS OF ORIENT ARE” All sing

We three kings of Orient are bearing gifts, we traverse far

Field and fountain, moor and mountain following yonder star

Oh, star of wonder, star of might, star with royal beauty bright

Westward leading, still proceeding, guide us to thy perfect light

Born a babe on Bethlehem's plain: gold we bring to crown him again

King forever, ceasing never over us all to reign

Oh, star of wonder, star of might, star with royal beauty bright

Westward leading, still proceeding, guide us to thy perfect light

Frankincense to offer have I, incense owns a deity nigh

Prayer and praising, all men raising, worship God on high

Oh, star of wonder, star of might, star with royal beauty bright

Westward leading, still proceeding, guide us to thy perfect light

Myrhh is mine, its bitter perfume, breathes a life of gathering gloom

Sorrowing, sighing, bleeding, dying, sealed in a stone cold tomb.

Oh, star of wonder, star of might, star with royal beauty bright

Westward leading, still proceeding, guide us to thy perfect light

Offertory Sentence All sing

The Celebration of the Eucharist Priest: Gracious God, accept the offering of your Church, the hearts of your people

joined in praise and thanksgiving, in the name of Jesus Christ the Lord. All: Amen.

- - - - - - - - - - - - Ho ly- Ho ly- Ho ly- Lord, God of pow er- and might;

Heav'n and Earth are full of your glo ry,- Ho san- na- in the high est.-

Priest: Blessed are you, gracious God, creator of heaven and earth, you have revealed

your eternal plan of salvation, and have shown your Son Jesus Christ to be the

light of all peoples. Therefore with angels and archangels we raise our voices in

joyful praise to proclaim the glory of your name.

SANCTUS All sing

Please kneel or be seated

Priest: We give thanks to you, Lord our God, for the goodness and love you have made

known to us in creation; in calling Israel to be your people; in your Word spoken

through the prophets; and above all in the Word made flesh, Jesus your son. For

in these last days you sent him to be incarnate from the Virgin Mary, to be the

Saviour and Redeemer of the world. In him, you have delivered us from evil, and

made us worthy to be in your presence. In him, you have brought us out of error

into truth, out of sin into righteousness, out of death into life.

Priest: On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, a death he freely accepted,

our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke

it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: this is my body which is given

for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.” After supper he took the cup of

wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all

of you: this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many

for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance

of me.” Therefore, Father, according to his command,

All: we remember his death; we proclaim his resurrection, we await his coming in glory;

Priest: and we offer our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to you, Lord of all; presenting to you, from your creation, this bread and this wine. We pry you, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts, that they may be the sacrament of the body of Christ and his blood of the new covenant. Unite us to your Son in his sacrifice, that we, made acceptable in him, may be sanctified by the Holy Spirit. In the fullness of time, reconcile all things in Christ, and make them new, and bring us to that city of light where you dwell with all your sons and daughters; through Jesus Christ our Lord, the firstborn of all creation, the

Priest: head of the Church, and the author of our salvation; by whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory are yours, almighty Father, now and forever.

All: Amen. The Lord’s Prayer All sing unaccompanied

Lamb of God, Lamb of God, you

take a way- the sin of the world, have mer cy,- have mer cy- on us.

Lamb of God, Lamb of God, you

take a way- the sin of the world; grant us your peace. Grant us your peace.

Priest: We break the bread of life, and that life is the light of the world.

All: God here among us, light in the midst of us, bring us to light and life.

Priest: The gifts of God for the People of God.

People: Thanks be to God.

AGNUS DEI All sing

Communion Hymn: #159 – “BRIGHTEST AND BEST” All sing

Brightest and best of the stars of the morning, dawn on our darkness, and lend us thine aid:

gem of the East, the horizon adorning, guide where our infant Redeemer is laid.

Cold on his cradle the dew–drops are shining, low lies his head with the beasts of the stall;

angels adore him in slumber reclining, Maker and Monarch and Saviour of all.

Say, shall we yield him, in costly devotion, odours of Edom and offerings divine,

gems of the mountain and pearls of the ocean, myrrh from the forest and gold from the mine?

Vainly we offer each ample oblation, vainly with gifts would his favour secure;

richer by far is the heart's adoration, dearer to God are the prayers of the poor.

Brightest and best of the stars of the morning, dawn on our darkness, and lend us thine aid:

gem of the East, the horizon adorning, guide where our infant Redeemer is laid.

Communion Hymn: #122 – “IN THE BLEAK MIDWINTER” All sing

In the bleak midwinter, frosty wind made moan,

earth stood hard as iron, water like a stone;

snow had fallen, snow on snow, snow on snow,

in the bleak midwinter, long ago.

Our God, heaven cannot hold him, nor earth sustain;

heaven and earth shall flee away when he comes to reign.

In the bleak midwinter a stable place sufficed

the Lord God almighty, Jesus Christ.

Angels and archangels may have gathered there;

cherubim and seraphim thronged the air;

but his mother only in her maiden bliss,

worshipped the beloved with a kiss.

What can I give him, poor as I am?

If I were a shepherd, I would bring a lamb;

if I were a wise man, I would do my part;

yet what I can, I give him – give my heart.

Prayer after Communion

Priest: God of all the nations of the earth, guide us with your light. Help us to recognize

Christ as he comes to us in this eucharist and in our neighbours. May we

welcome him with love, for he is Lord now and for ever.

All: Amen. Please stand

Priest: Glory to God,

All: whose power working in us, can do infinitely more than we can ask or

imagine. Glory to God from generation to generation, in the Church and in

Christ Jesus, for ever and ever. Amen.

The Blessing

Annoucements

Recessional Hymn: #160 – “AS WITH GLADNESS MEN OF OLD” Please stand & sing

As with gladness men of old did the guiding star behold;

as with joy they hailed its light, leading onward, beaming bright;

so, most gracious Lord, may we evermore be led to thee.

As with joyful steps they sped, Saviour, to thy lowly bed,

there to bend the knee before thee, whom heaven and earth adore;

so may we with willing feet ever seek thy mercy seat.

As they offered gifts most rare at that cradle rude and bare,

so may we with joyful song, raising voices pure and strong,

all our costliest treasures bring, Christ, to thee our heavenly king.

In the heavenly country bright need they no created light:

thou its light, its joy, its crown, thou its sun which goes not down;

there forever may we sing alleluias to our king.

Dismissal

Priest: Go in peace. Proclaim the Word made flesh. Alleluia!

People: Glory, thanks and praise to God. Alleluia!
