T H E S T A R March 1, 2012

It's easy to forget that our little parish is part of a larger community of faith. We are, of course, a member parish of a denomination - the Episcopal Church. We are one of 181 Episcopal parishes in the Diocese of Virginia, which is part of the national church. We are also a part of the Anglican Communion, a confederation of national churches that reach around the world and that share a common starting point, namely the Church of England.

But we are also part of an even larger community of followers of Christ. Some may seem very strange to us, like snake-handlers in the Appalachians or charismatic Christians who speak in tongues, Some may feel like neighbors, like the Lutherans with whom the Episco-pal Church is in full communion, or Methodists, a denomination that rose out of efforts by the Wesleys to reform the Church of England. Others still are less familiar: Pentecostals, ""foursquare gospel" Baptists, and so on. Some are our physical neighbors, church families whom we partner with in this area, like the two Presbyterian churches nearby Lakeside and Overbrook), community churches like River of Life, Roman Catholic churches like Our Lady of Lourdes.

Make no mistake: we have theological differences with many of these other Christian churches. Some of these are relatively minor, some are quite significant. But one thing stands above those differences: we all confess our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, who died on the cross but was resurrected on Easter Day. That overarching truth helps us reach across our differences and partner in study of the Word and in mission.

This is at the heart of our Lenten Wednesday evening series this year. This series has been a shared ministry of the LARCUM group here in Lakeside (Lutheran/Anglican/Roman Catholic/United Methodist). Each Wednesday evening, we gather to have a simple meal, dig deeper into the meaning of God's Word and how we live it, and then share a time of prayer and worship. It is a chance to see the richness of our shared Christian heritage and the diversity of our understanding, and that's a good thing.

Epiphany has the privilege of hosting the series this year, as we spend some time medi-tating on the implications of Jesus' Great Commission (Matt 25:37-40). we will talk about our mutual understanding of that commission, how this passage was the culmination of many similar commands from God and God's prophets, how the church has responded (or not), and what we can do today to do what Jesus commanded us to do.

Please join us for this series of meditations as we gather with our brothers and sisters in Christ to celebrate the One who unites us, who overcomes our differences and who in-spires us to bring His Kingdom to fruition, this Wednesday night and all Wednesday nights through Lent. The simple supper begins at 5:45 pm in the Parish Hall, followed by the presentation in the church and an evening compline service. Together with our fellow Christians we can learn and grow and serve, so much more than we can do alone.

Vestry Highlights Vestry Highlights

The Vestry met on Tuesday, February 14th at 6:30 pm. We began with a Bible study, as usual. Some high-lights:

We are in the black thus far for the year, with a surplus of $872.

We voted to ask Herb Williams and Ralph Martin to serve as Trustees of the Parish, given the passing of Trustees Charles McMurdo and Pete Whitlock. (N.B.: They have been asked and have accepted this re-sponsibility.)

We approved the parochial report to be sent to the national church and the review of our finances by outside auditors Mitchell Wiggins, to be sent to the diocese. The parochial report indicates that we are growing despite the passing of beloved long-time members, and the financial review indicates that we are following procedures appropriately.

We asked Lucy to order new grave markers and stones for the Memorial Garden.

The schedule of ShrineMont fundraisers was finalized, and we also talked about other fellowship ac-tivities to be hosted by ECW Chapter 5, including a possible Pentecost Picnic.

The new playground project, with Garrett Russell taking the lead as part of his Eagle Scout require-ments, is getting started.

The meeting ended with prayer at 8:15 pm. The next meeting will be held on Tuesday, March 13 at 6:30 pm. All are welcome!

SECOND SUNDAYS TO SPOTLIGHT OUR MINISTRIES

Beginning in March, one of our ministry programs will be setting up a display in the church hall during coffee hour. Our

Outreach Ministry will be the first group to be spotlighted in an effort to show the congregation the many ministries it

is involved in while trying to recruit a few new members.

Many know the Outreach group is involved in Lamb’s Basket, the shelter lunch feeding program and the collecting of

toiletries for the veterans. But this past year we expanded our ministries to include CARITAS, collecting cell phones for

domestic violence and a health ministry.

All of our ministries need some fresh faces and ideas on how to continue making our Epiphany membership a caring

and loving congregation.

If your ministry would like to be spotlighted on the second Sunday of an upcoming month, please contact me so a date

can be reserved.

Don’t be incognito!

If you have misplaced your name tag, or if you don’t have one, please put your name on the “Don’t Be Incognito” sheet at the back of the church. It is a courtesy to new-comers, who would find it much easier to talk to you if they can see your name, and it is a courtesy to those of us who have been around for a while, but who have occa-sional memory lapses!

Lenten and Easter Events We continue our LARCUM Interfaith Lenten series, hosted here at Church of the Epiphany, on every Wednesday in March. Join us for a light supper at 5:45 pm, then a program for about 45 minutes, followed by informal worship.

This year we are looking at the mandate that Jesus gave us in Matthew 25:34-35: to care for those who are hungry, needy, homeless, sick, imprisoned, and oppressed. What does that look like , how have our different traditions lived into the command-ment over the years, what can we do in our everyday lives? Join us and grow!

Education for Ministry

Our sister church on Hanes Avenue, St. Phillip’s, is considering beginning and EfM

group in the fall 2012. EfM, or Education for Ministry, is a program of Adult Christian

Education that was developed by the seminary at Sewanee. It is intended to help you

“dig deeper into the Christian faith, studying the Bible, Church history and theological

ideas and reflect on connecting faith with life experience’> It is a four-year program,

but you commit to participate one year at a time. If you are interested, please contact

the Rev. Phoebe Roaf at [email protected]

Daylight Saving Time begins on Sunday, March 11.

Be sure to set your clocks ahead 1 hour before going to

bed on Saturday evening, March 10.

Epiphany’s ECW Card Ministry

Did you know that our ECW remembers church members and friends with cards

for special occasions especially our ill or home-bound members? If you have some

greeting cards (of any type) you would like to donate, please bring them into the

church office or give them to Charlotte Lovelace

Lamb’s Basket

The need for help with food continues to be great for those with limited re-

sources, so your donations of nonperishable food items is particularly needed

right now. They especially need tuna and peanut butter. Other suggestions

include: canned vegetables, jelly, breakfast items, toilet paper, paper towels,

tissues, toothpaste, deodorant, shampoo, diapers for babies/infants/toddlers,

pet food, etc.

A Closer Look...

Blessed Are They Who See:

A Lenten Quiet Day with the Women Followers of Jesus

Lenten Quiet Day is open to all adults!

Through scripture, music, meditations and silence, we will walk with the women who followed Jesus from Galilee, to the foot of the cross, to the empty tomb. Dress comfortably. Bring your Bible. Bring your journal, if you use one. Bring your friends! Come walk with the faithful who are seeking in Lent to follow the Way that leads from life through death to life again. Lunch, snacks, and Eucha-rist are included in our day together. The program is based on the female fol-lowers of Jesus. Men are welcome to attend.

The Rev. Canon Susan Goff

The Rev. Canon Susan Goff joined the Bishop’s staff as Canon to the Ordinary

in January 2010. Canon Goff oversees the day-to-day supervision of various

Episcopal ministries, including discernment and ordination processes for the di-

ocese; misconduct prevention and responses; and the transition process for cler-

gy and congregations. Canon Goff came to the diocesan staff from St. Chris-

topher’s, Springfield, where she served as rector for 15 years. In addition to her

work at St. Christopher’s, she served as an adjunct instructor in liturgics at Vir-

ginia Theological Seminary. Prior to St. Christopher’s, Canon Goff served as

rector at Immanuel, Old Church, as chaplain of St. Catherine’s School, Rich-

mond, and as chaplain of St. Margaret’s School, Tappahannock. Canon Goff is

married to The Rev. C. Thomas Holliday, an interim ministry specialist who has

served numerous churches in the Diocese of Virginia.

Adult Forum for March

Our Lenten series of forums is entitled

“Living Lent with Mary”.

Although we are most used to hearing about Mary, the mother of God,

during Advent and Christmas, she is as powerful presence

at the end of Jesus’ life as she is at the beginning.

Each session will have a reflection on how Mary teaches us

to be disciples, as well as questions for discussion.

March 4: Blessed is She: Living Lent with Mary Part II

March 11: Blessed is She: Living Lent with Mary Part III

March 18: Blessed is She: Living Lent with Mary Part IV

March 25: Blessed is She: Living Lent with Mary Part V

Please join us in the Parlor on Sundays at 9:30 AM for this series.

Men’s Bible Study

We will meet twice a month, on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of each month. That will be March 13th

and 27th at noon, in the parish hall. Bring a bag lunch and your Bible, and let’s get to work!

Easter Flowers or Banner Fund

Time to get your order in for Easter Flowers or give to the Banner Fund. Cost is $15.00. Please be

sure to include both your name and the names of those you want to remember. Also, whether you

are giving to the Banner Fund or for an Easter Flower.

Volunteers are needed to clean the church in his absence. There are ten slots; 5 pre-Sunday

The prayers and sympathy of the congregation are extended to the family

and friends of Elizabeth Davis who died on Monday, February 27th. A

graveside service was held on Thursday March 1 at Forest Lawn Cemetery.

May her soul and the souls of the faithful departed rest in peace.

CARITAS returns to Epiphany...

Once again, Epiphany will host a CARITAS group in conjunction with the folks from

Emmanuel Brook Hill. We will have our guest with us from Saturday evening May

12th, through Saturday morning May 19th. To make things move a bit smoother,

Epiphany will be responsible for everything for the first 4 days and Emmanuel will

take over for the final 3 days.

There will be many opportunities to serve and we will have a sign-up sheet early in

April. Call Paul Jones 346-0492 with any questions.

Outreach Opportunity

Bailey Nixon will be collecting eye glasses for her community service project at Moody Middle School. She will be

donating the eye glasses that she collects from you to the ‘Lions Club International’ Foundation. This is a very good

organization and trustworthy.

The donated eye glasses need to be in good shape in order to send them to their office. She will collect eye glass-

es for two weeks. The box she will use to collect the eye glasses will be in the hallway. Thank you for your sup-

port!
