Street Millage Renewal In August or November of this year voters in the City of Gaylord will be asked to renew a 4.1513 mill levy to fund continued reconstruction of our streets and critical infrastructure. The voters have graciously provided the City with two such ten‐year millages in the past. Throughout this twenty year period of time we have seen over $12 million expended on new pavement, sidewalks, water mains, and sanitary sewers. There is hardly a neighborhood that hasn’t seen such improvements and we are anxious to do more! However, we need local residents support. The new curb and gutter streets, and the replaced or new sidewalks have added a great deal to the appearance and drivability of our community. We ask that our residents remember this when they consider continued support of our street millage.
Sprinkling Meter Program
May Lower Your Water/Sewer Bill!
All water customers are eligible to participate in the City’s money saving sprinkling meter program. This program is designed to measure the amount of water used that is not discharged into the City sewer system. Participating customers are required to purchase and install a sprinkling meter that measures water used through a specified
NOMINATING PETITIONS will be received in the office of the City Clerk until 4:00 p.m., Tuesday, May 14, 2013 for the following offices in the City of
Gaylord, Michigan:
City Clerk – 2 Year Term City Treasurer – 2 Year Term Mayor – 2 Year Term Council Member – At Large (3 positions available) – 4 Year Term
If more than two persons file for any one office, a Primary Election shall be held Tuesday, August 6, 2013; otherwise the election of the said candidates will be held on Tuesday, November 5, 2013.
For more information, or to obtain a nominating petition, please contact Becky Curtis, City Clerk, at 989 732‐4060.
outdoor water faucet. They are then only billed for water usage on that portion of water metered through the sprinkling meter. Contact City Hall at 732‐4060 for more information.
Water/Sewer bills automatically deducted from your checking account!
The City of Gaylord offers an Automatic Payment Plan (APP) via electronic deduction from a checking or savings account. As long as you maintain adequate funds in your account, there are no fees for APP, no check‐writing charges, and no late payments.
You’ll still get a monthly bill. You’ll have time to review the bill and call us if you have questions. Your Water/Sewer bill will be automatically paid from your bank account on the due date. You’ll keep control over your payment, even if you don’t write the check yourself.
To begin Automatic Payment Plan, please complete an Authorization Agreement form (available in City Hall, 732‐4060 or online at http://cityofgaylord.com ‐ Forms) and return it to City Hall. Automatic payments would then begin with your next water bill. You will need to continue to make payments until “Notice of Automatic Payment Plan” is printed on your monthly utility bill.
The City of Gaylord is looking at new options which will provide fast, easy, and affordable ways to securely pay your utility and tax bills electronically. Please watch for details on our website – www.CityOfGaylord.com
Page 5 2013 Street Projects
South Wisconsin Avenue.
Our 2013 Street Project will be South Wisconsin Avenue. This project is long awaited and will complete the improvements started on this roadway in 2009. This project will include the construction of new curb and gutter, storm water improvements, new water main and a new roadway. The project will begin at the south water tower and progress to Grandview Boulevard and onto the intersection at South Otsego Avenue. The estimated cost for construction is $1,128,312. The City is extremely fortunate to be working with the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) and the Federal Urban Program which is contributing $375,000 to the cost of this important thoroughfare in our community. Our cost for the project is $753,312.
This project is being bid by the State with a bid opening expected on April 5, 2013. We anticipate that the project will begin as soon as weather permits with construction to be completed sometime in mid‐July. The roadway will remain open to local traffic throughout the construction. We are starting this project earlier in the season than usual to assist businesses and with hopes that all things return to normal as quickly as possible.
Mankowski Road Extension. Work is continuing on plans for the Mankowski Road extension. This project would enable the City to put a new local roadway in from the intersection of Edelweiss Village Parkway west to the Home Depot parking lot. The City is working with the Otsego County Road Commission (OCRC), the Otsego County Economic Alliance (OCEA), and MDOT to obtain Federal Highway funds and State Safety funds to assist in paying for this project.
The total cost of construction is anticipated to be $255,375. The City share of this cost will be $51,075. Design and right‐of‐way acquisition is taking place now. This project is expected to begin and be completed in the Fall of 2013. This roadway is desired to provide a safer alternate route for traffic off of M‐32.
What NOT to Flush Down Your Sewer
In order to prevent blockages in your sewer line, please refrain from dumping trash down your toilet, sink, drainpipe, or garbage disposal. “Trash” items that should not be dumped down your sewer include, but are not limited to, the following:
• Fats, Oils or Grease • Coffee Grinds; Egg Shells • Paper Towels; Produce Stickers;
Bags/Wrappings; Cardboard • Disposable Diapers • Rags • Flushable Cat Litter • Needles and Sharps • Solvents Paints, Turpentine, Nail Polish,
Polish Remover • Feminine Hygiene Products • Prescription and Over‐the Counter
Medications
Any solid matter that you put down the toilet or drainpipe has the potential to cause blockages in both the public sewer and your own private drain.
Sewer Backup Insurance
Sewer backups can be costly, but sewer backup insurance is not! Many policy holders inadvertently believe they have coverage for these types of occurrences, when in fact they do not. Contact your insurance company for information on special coverage for damage resulting from backups of drains and sewers.
By State law, the City’s insurance carrier only pays claims resulting from sewer backups when negligence in maintaining the system can be proven. Therefore, property owners are encouraged to protect their property by obtaining sewer backup insurance.
