The Lilydale Progressive - December 2011 Page 1
typist, research assistant, occasional editor
etc, Carol Charlton to Bridport of all places.
July the new Upper Piper Arts Crafts
Co-operative was formed, and the Country
Women‘s Association - Lilydale Branch
hosted the Northern Forum at the
Community Learning Room at the school.
August the Senior Citizens hosted another
very successful Indoor Bowls Carnival at the
Memorial Hall and Census was once again
taken of all residents in Australia,
September saw the Pony Club hold their
Presentation Night, and Launceston City
Council resumed work on Bacala Road.
October was a huge month when the
entire town celebrated Lilydale‘s 150th
Birthday, there were a plethora of activities
for all to enjoy right around the district
including, the grand opening ceremony, the
‗Then & Now‘ exhibition, the Spring Show,
‗Sing along Sound of Music‘, Harold‘s Garden
Party and Bush dance at the Memorial Hall,
it was certainly a busy couple of weeks and
lovely to see so many people out and about.
November saw the Seniors hold yet
another Indoor Bowls Carnival and the
Rhododendron Gardens (now privately
owned) were reopened to the public.
On a more personal note, it‘s been a big
year for me as well, my older brother Peter
passed away in March (thankfully I was able
to be with him when this happened), I
camped out and cooked for 20 people over
Easter, visited a friend in Victoria for her
50th Birthday, (3 visits to Victoria in 3
months is just a bit too many), started on a
health kick to lose weight in September (go
me, I‘ve lost nearly 12 kilos so far) and had
to have my beautiful Cocker Spaniel Bella
put to sleep a couple of weeks ago. A year of highs and lows, but that‘s just the way life
is at times. And of course I‘ve edited 11
issues of the Progressive.
So on to next year, who knows what will
happen as the old saying goes ‗Yesterday is
History, Tomorrow a Mystery, Today is a gift,
that’s why we call it the Present.’ So let‘s all
make the most of our Presents and enjoy
each day as it comes. I wish you all a Very
Merry Christmas and a Safe and Happy New
Year and look forward to catching up with
you all next year. JAYNE
Editorial
Well we‘ve certainly got a bumper issue for
you this month; in fact I think it‘s the largest
issue I‘ve put together in my whole 11 years
as editor.
Thanks to our stalwart regulars who
entertain us every month with news and
views from their group. We hope you‘ve had
a successful and fulfilling year serving our
local community.
To all our advertisers, I‘ve said it before and
I‘ll say it again, without you all there would
be NO Progressive. Thanks for your support
this year and we hope to see you advertising
with us again next year.
A big thank you to Carol Charlton and
Coralee Freeman for their help with the
Progressive this year.
It‘s been an interesting year for Lilydale with
lots happening around the District.
February saw the Football Club move from
NEFU to NTFA, the Village Market holding a
Mini Fringe Circus Festival, Fred the goat go
missing, and on a very sad note, a well loved
and valuable community member, Tiger
Pollard passed away.
March was alive with Teddy Bears at
Hollybank Forest, and Seniors holding an
Indoor Bowls Carnival in the Memorial Hall,
oh yes, and Fred the goat came home!
April weighed in with a new dressage arena
for the Pony Club, a completely new Junior
Football Club emerged and we once again
honoured those who gave their lives for
Australia on ANZAC Day, and of course we
saw the Targa cars come through town once
again.
May was a musical month with Tasmanian
Regional Arts - Lilydale playing host to the
Elanee Ensemble in the new Performing Arts
Centre at the school. Another long term community member, Leila Robertson passed
away, and the new Lilydale Bowls Club
rooms were open for business.
June of course is Lantern Walk month, what
a picture the twinkling lights made at the
Lilydale Falls reserve, the Pony Club & Adult
Riders Club attended a Navigation Ride in
Pattersonia, and I lost my long time sidekick,

Here are the lyrics:
Over Bardenhagen‟s Door
Lyrics and melody © Rob Andrew (19/10/2011)
With bottles of tea, cross-cut saw and stringy bark handled axe
We laid those mountain giants flat
and hauled them down the tracks
With horse and bell-wheel, shackle and chain,
we worked the mountain bare But when the rain came down in ‘29
we wished those tress were there.
Three days long without a stop
The rain came pelting down
It rolled like water off the Mountain‘s back and flooded Lilydale town.
It snuffed the coals in Snowy‘s furnace,
Topped Bardenhagen‘s doors;
We didn‘t know, us bush-block fellers It was goin‘ to pour and pour (and pour…and pour
etc).
It rose and rose up over the door
Of Bardenhagen’s store
How did we know in ‘29 It was going to pour and pour?
If you see wood and not the trees
Remember our big flood
When Mrs Whiting had to pull her cows From out of tons of mud.
The Mountain looks in pristine shape
Its peak all shining there;
Just climb its slopes and don‘t forget
If you cut it down, beware. It rose and rose up over the door
Of Bardenhagen’s store
How did we know in ‘29
It was going to pour and pour?
The LDPA will be meeting December 6th 7:30pm Old
Court House.

Neighbourhood Watch
12 people attended our November meeting
including our Guest Speaker.
Our guest speaker was Constable Annabel Shegog,
Northern Community Policing Services.
Annabel spoke about the effect that the State Budget is
having on Community Policing and the Police Force in
general. Annabel also spoke in length about the fact
that people in areas of low crime were becoming
complacent and starting to leave cars and property unlocked. Cars are being broken into and loose change
and IPods, etc., are being stolen. People are once again
urged to lock up all property and not to leave any
valuables, visible in vehicles, whether or not the vehicle is locked or not. Leading up to Christmas it appears
that there is an increase in the number of people trying
to sell things door to door. The majority of these
people are honest but there is the potential for
property burglary and residents are being urged to be vigilant and report any suspicious behaviour to police.
Everybody associated with the Lilydale Neighbourhood
Watch, would like to thank Annabel for making the
time to come and speak at our meeting. We hope that the whole community will heed the advice given by
Annabel and lock up property.
Police Report
On the 15/10/2011, offenders have entered a business
on Second River Road and four Chainsaws and a Compact Welder have been stolen. Launceston CIB is
investigating.
Anybody who can assist the Police with enquiries on
the above incident are urged to contact Crime
Stoppers on 1800 333 000
More Important Information.
Design out property crime
As a member of the community, there are steps you
can take to protect yourself and your property from crime. People that take all necessary precautions are
less likely to be targeted by thieves. Use the following
information to reduce the likelihood of your property
being targeted.
Whilst the majority of people are conscious of locking up their homes, a recent analysis of burglaries in the
Northern District has shown that some people are still
not securing their garages, sheds, workshops and
building sites adequately.
Recently thieves have been specifically targeting these
areas. Common items stolen are tools and chainsaws.
These items should not be left in the front or back yard
or on display for any length of time. Many people are
complacent when it comes to securing these areas.
Sheds, garages and workshops should be locked at all times when not in use.
Tradesmen should avoid leaving their power tools and
equipment onsite when they knock off. Owners and
builders should also avoid leaving keys in obvious places, such as the meter box, for other tradesmen to
collect.
Stolen items of property are usually sold at a very
cheap price. If the price of your new chainsaw or
power tool is too good, then the chances are it is stolen. If you suspect this is the case, contact
Launceston CIB for advice on 131 444. Did you know,
that if you purchase items you suspect or know are
stolen, then you may well be committing a crime yourself?
Next Meeting
The next meeting of the Lilydale Neighbourhood
Watch will be held at the Fire Station on the 08th of
December commencing at 6.30 pm, this earlier starting time will be for December only and will be followed by
our Christmas Function.
The Committee and members of the Lilydale
Neighbourhood Watch, wish everybody in the
community a Merry Christmas and a Prosperous New Year.
Country Women's
Association - Lilydale
As usual we had our monthly meeting on the first
Wednesday of November in the Old Court Room.
We are nearing the final one for the year so we are off
to have a Christmas gathering for lunch at the Basin
Café, in a setting of beauty and natural wonderment! We hope to see all our members make it and the roll
call is to bring some thoughts for us to share, in the
form of three things we are grateful for or tell of
something nice that happened. ―Happiness‖ research-ers say that the main ingredient to finding and being a
happy person is to appreciate and be grateful for all the
wonderful and good things we have in our life. ―An
Attitude of Gratitude‖ could go a long way for all of
us!
We were involved with the Spring Show held as part of
Lilydale 150th Celebrations. CWA members provided
the qualified judges for the cooking section plus the
stewards for this section. The results of the cooking are included in the Progressive and all entrants and
achievers are congratulated. We were very pleased to
see the cooking section being supported but would
have liked even more people to have a go and enter
cooking, but trust that if held again many more will be having a go at the cooking.

Harold's Garden Party and Hike a
Great Success
The roll-out of Life Education programs in northeast schools in 2012 has been guaranteed, following the
successful fundraising activities driven by Sally Wilson.
The two functions: Harold's garden Party, held at Sally's
magnificent gardens on 29 October and the 240 Km
Harold's Hike from Lilydale to Bicheno, completed on 18 November raised $10,154.50. The Chairman of Life
Education Tasmania, Stuart Bryce, said that almost all of
the monies raised came from the local community,
which indicated the high degree of support for Life Education programs.
Significant contributors were IGA and Budget Rent A
Car. People wanting more information can visit the
website: www.lifeeducation.org.au/tasmania or donate
to Harold's Hike at www.gofundraise.com.au/page/BryceS.

CWA members also assisted with the stewardship of
the beautiful floral entries; thank you to all who
worked hard to have their gardens producing such
beautiful blooms and to put their arrangements together.
The Handcraft and Home Industries Group of
Northern Tas. meet each month in Launceston, and
our Lilydale member Dorothy received a First for her truffles in October. For November the challenge is to
make a homemade Xmas Card, Four Shortbread and
bring a stem of Flowers.
CWA members wish you all a joyous and bountiful
Christmas time, we hope for safety on the roads and peace and civility within the wider community.

Operation Bounce Back
The Operation Bounce Back Program is running from
22 September to 22 December 2011, providing
information on how to keep your car secure and the
chance to redeem an immobiliser voucher. This offer requires you to redeem your immobiliser voucher and
book your car in with one of the local installers
supporting Operation Bounce Back before 22
December 2011. So, apply promptly or you may miss
out!
Contact Launceston City Council on 6323 3001 or
check Operation Bounce Back:
www.launceston.tas.gov.au
Why immobilise?
In 2010, a total of 177 motor vehicle thefts were recorded in the city of Launceston. This figure includes
cars, motorcycles and heavy/other vehicles. Of the cars
stolen, 82 per cent were manufactured prior to 2000.
What may be surprising is that it is older vehicles, not new ones that are most commonly targeted. This is
because older vehicles lack adequate security, making
them easy targets. Around three-quarters of vehicles
stolen in Australia are taken by opportunistic thieves
who steal for short term uses such as transport, to commit other crimes or simply for kicks.
Research indicates that an electronic engine
immobiliser is the best form of vehicle security available
to deter these opportunistic thieves. Other simple measures advertised as part of the Bounce Back
campaign will ensure you never become the victim of
car theft.
The models most frequently targeted by thieves in
Launceston, Tasmania are: Subaru Liberty, Nissan Pulsar N15, Nissan Pulsar N14, Nissan Skyline, Nissan
Pintara U12, Subaru Impreza, Nissan Navara D21, Hol-
den Commodore VL, Nissan Pulsar N13, Nissan Pulsar
N13, Holden Commodore VN, Toyota Corolla AE82.
How will the immobiliser vouchers be distributed?
The Launceston City Council will assess eligibility of
participants based on the information provided in
the Operation Bounce Back Application Form. The Application Form can also be obtained from the
Council's Customer Service Centre at Town Hall, St
John Street or call 03 6323 3000.
Car safe tips
1. Park Wisely
2. Remove temptation
3. Secure your vehicle
4. Protect your keys

Karoola Volunteer Fire Brigade
Would ask all resident and property owners to please
clean up around their properties and land as the fire
season is all but upon us and for us to say no to a burn
off permit may offend so if property owners act now it will make their lives and lives of others safe along with
their homes and land safe for all of us in our area this
up and coming fire season.
If anyone has any queries please contact one of our
permit officers for advice and remember to report your ―Burn Off‖ to the TFS on free call on 1800
000 699 as it helps us keep track of what is burning in
our area and we don‘t turn up to put out your fire
saving a lot of embarrassment for all concerned.
REMEMBER IT IS BETTER TO ASK THAN TO BE SORRY.
Have a safe enjoyable Christmas along with a happy
new year from Karoola Volunteer Fire Brigade.
Upper Piper Art & Craft Co-
Op now open for business

support the local artisans who have made the Co-Op
possible. Avoid the hustle and bustle and get in early

something unique to our Village, all most welcome.
Lastly, the winner of our raffle drawn on
13th November was David Scarborough,
congratulations David. Again, thank you all for your

Summer gets a new sound
Patrons at public events and beachgoers will be reminded to be sun smart this summer with a new
jingle produced by renowned Australian musician Ben
Lee and Sony Music.
Launching in Tasmania for the first time the ―Sun
Sound‖ is a catchy five second music jingle designed to be played at regular intervals on loud speakers at
beaches, pools, sports grounds and outdoor events.
Sun Sound was initially launched in New South Wales
in summer 2009 and attracted widespread national and international media coverage. Sun Sound has been
internationally recognised for creative innovation at
award ceremonies in New York, France, London and
Australia.

Cancer Council Tasmania CEO Simon Barnsley said
evaluations of Sun Sound had shown it was effective in
reminding people to be sun-smart.
―Surveys of Sun Sound have shown that 85% of those exposed to the jingle understood the message and 61%
took positive action to protect their skin when hearing
the sound,‖ Mr Barnsley said.
Mr Barnsley said that two in three Australians will develop skin cancer in their lifetime, and sun exposure
during youth is a major contributor.
―Most young people are aware they should protect
their skin from the sun, however research shows they
often forget. Sun Sound is a friendly sun-smart reminder when it‘s most needed,‖ Mr Barnsley said.
Mr Barnsley encouraged people to slip on sun
protective clothing, slop on some sunscreen, slap on a
hat, seek shade and slide on sunglasses when they heard the sound.
If you would like to have the Sun Sound played at your
event contact Caroline Liebeknecht at Cancer Council
Tasmania on 6233 2030.
Launceston City Council Updates
The Launceston City Council's work along Bacala Road
will cease within the next few weeks.
The final stages for this year (the road widening
between the Paling Track and Golconda Road, around
No. 132) is currently in progress. As well as the
widening, we are hoping to improve the water control across the road and are upgrading stormwater pipes at
various stages along the road. We will then spray a
dust suppressant outside each house. Please be aware
this is only a temporary solution until we seal the road
next year, as our plans are to continue the upgrade over the next two financial years.
A big thank you to local residents and everyone who
may have been delayed, disrupted or occasionally had
to use an alternate route instead of their normal quick
trip through Bacala Road. Your support and appreciation of the work we've been doing is greatly
appreciated and we wish you all a very happy
Christmas and a prosperous New Year!

And finally: It has been a great year for the arts in
Lilydale, with the highly successful winter solstice
lantern workshop and the lantern walk, the many and
wonderful performances held in the village at the Lily-dale Market, at Leaning Church Vineyard, at the Per-
forming Arts Centre of the School as well as Valley
Voices at the grand opening of the Lilydale 150th
celebrations.
Our Retrospective Exhibition during the 150th
celebration in the old Library proved to be very
successful and well attended. We showcased and had
photographic evidence of workshops, major projects,
the Mural, the painted Mural Poles, the Creative Pavers, 22 years of the Regional Arts in Lilydale for the
community of Lilydale.
It has been a fantastic year for the visual arts with the
exhibitions of quilts and tea-cosies at Providence Vineyard, the oldest established vineyard in Tasmania,
the students of Jillian Weston‘s School of Art, the then
and now photographs at the 150th and Shelley
MacLeod exhibiting in Scottsdale. And to top it off, the
Upper Piper Arts and Crafts Cooperative was established and started operating in the Old Library so
that now all residents and visitors have the opportunity
to enjoy and support local arts and crafts.
And not to forget, finally we have received enough
funds to start painting murals on our poles again.
BRILLIANT.
Can 2012 top this?
Thanks to all, our president, the committee and
members of Arts Lilydale for a series of huge

Lilydale Lions Club News
This month we had a visit from the
Tasmanian District Governor, Lion Toby
Crawford and his partner Lion Julie. They have 4
children, all of whom are Leos (Lions youth club) and they are looking to have there grandson enrolled as a
Lion cub. Truly a family that embrace the Lions Motto
of ―We Serve‖. Toby has a long history with Lions
and his emphasis is squarely on the youth of our
community.
The District Governor also took the opportunity to
induct two new members to our club. Welcome to
Peter Lynam and Natalie Rudov. Lions Peter and
Natalie are new to the district and, like many members,
have decided to be part of the community rather than just living in it. Say hello to them at the markets –
some have already been wooed by Natalie‘s sales pitch
for our Christmas cakes. They have taken the pledge
to adopt the Lions motto – ―We Serve‖.
Tom Pearce: Whilst on the subject of youth, the club
was please and surprised to receive a letter from 10
year old Tom Pearce, asking for our support with his
petition to Launceston City Council asking for a skate
park to be built in town. The members were happy to lend our support to Tom and we wish him well in his
endeavours.
Senior Citizens Bus trip: On Sunday 13 November,
37 intrepid, senior members of the Lilydale community, accompanied by 9 not-so-intrepid Lions Club members
boarded David Browns big, blue bus to visit Port Sorell.
The weather was fine and the company was better.
The journey took us via Mt Direction, the Batman
Bridge and Exeter, where a small stop was made. The green countryside was a highlight of the journey for
those looking out the window. The bad girls at the
back of the bus were making their usual racket; you
know who you are!
The trip continued through the back blocks of Frankford, over the Franklin Rivulet and into Port
Sorell. For many of the Lions club members this was a
first visit to this lovely seaside town. David did a great
job of guiding the bus along the narrow esplanade to the picturesque park at the entrance to the Panatana
Rivulet; this despite the heckling of Bill (otherwise
known as Hyacinth Bucket).
As if unaware of the treacherous mountainside that
lead from the bus to the park, our hardy souls skipped, carefree, downhill to the feast that awaited them.
Once there, they were greeted by platters of
sandwiches which had to be consumed before the real
target was reached – the cake! Once reached the cake disappeared as if a flock of seagulls had fallen on a small
serve of hot chips!
The raffle followed with numerous planned prizes
added to by Bill volunteering to mow a lucky persons
lawn – Bill doesn‘t realise the winner owns a 5 acre block and a push mower! The decision was made to
end our park visit just as the weather turned decidedly
wet. Which was a shame really, as some of the ladies
were about to go for a skinny dip in the paddling pool!
The return journey was a pleasant afternoon drive. Unfortunately we discovered that two of our female
Lions members have drinking problems; Helen and
Natalie were unable to drink out of a bottle, spilling
their drinks on themselves and the bus. Sorry David, we will send them around to clean the bus out.
All in all a great day was had by all. In all seriousness, it
was a very pleasant day with many friendships renewed
and some new ones made. There were three spare
seats on the bus so if you want to add your name to the list for next year, let one of the Lions members
know (or see us at the markets).
Lions International Tree Planting Project: In July
2011, the President of Lions International outlined his aim for his presidential year – for Lions Clubs to plant a
million trees. Two months later that aim was
surpassed. To date Lions clubs have planted over 5.5
million trees worldwide.
The Lions Club of Lilydale would like to add to that number. Now some might say that in Lilydale one
thing we have a lot of is trees, and that can‘t be a bad
thing, but we can always have more.
If you know of an area that needs some trees, please
let us know so that we can look at adding to the good work of Lions worldwide.
Lions Christmas Cakes: You might have noticed
that it‘s getting close to Christmas. Lions Cakes are
on sale around town, or from the Lions stall at the Markets. At $10 for a 1kg cake and $14 for a 1.5kg
cake they are good value, and taste delicious. They
also have a 3 year ―use by‖ date so you can keep them
for those cold winter nights. For various reasons we
wont be doing a cake run this year, so you need to get them through one of these avenues or from a Lions
Club member. And know that all profits go to worthy
causes in Lilydale, Australia and worldwide.
A load of old cow poo: We have a new load of old cow manure ready for your vegetables. At $5 a large
bag it is great value. Call Stephen on 6395 1323 to
place your order.
Up coming events: The Lions will continue to be at
the Lilydale Village markets whenever we can, providing our great value sausage sizzle, Christmas cakes, books
and other bric-a-brac. Come and say hello.
We will also be at the Carols in the Vines, providing
dessert, drinks, battery-powered candles and glow in the dark bracelets. We hope to see you all there.
End of the Year: As the year draws to an end and
the club goes into a short hiatus, the Lilydale Lions
would like to wish all members of the Lilydale
community a very happy Christmas with family and friends. We also hope you have a safe and happy 2012.
Be careful over the holiday period.

As the year is coming to a close this will be the last
report for 2011. We have had a good year with three
good carnivals having 24 teams in each.
A big thank you must go to Doreen for organising the food etc. and of course all the generous people that
help us in the kitchen and all through the year with
functions.
Our annual Xmas lunch has been arranged and we are
going to Waterfront Hotel, Beauty Point. Thank you David & Jessie for taking the bus, we can all enjoy a
meal and travel in comfort.
Glenys has organised all the Tamar Valley days and
Glenys & Ray represent our club at all the meetings.
On a sadder note we have lost one of our loyal members who passed away suddenly. She was
renowned for her jelly cakes and a great help in the
club. She will be sadly missed.
Hope everyone enjoys Xmas with family and friends and will catch up again in 2012.

Lilydale & District Junior Football
Club
The Lilydale Juniors have received an invitation to join
Bridport next Football Season. This will cover players
in both the Under 16‘s and Under 13‘s teams.
At this stage it has been agreed to talk to them towards the end of January next year, to see if
something can be worked out. Such an arrangement
will mean that Under 16‘s players who missed out on
getting a game this year will have a team to play with
next year.
It will be handy to know:
How many Under 16‘s players would be interested.
How many players there would be for the Under 13‘s. It may be possible to organise some separate
games for Lilydale players.
Whether or not there will be any support from the
Lilydale Football Club.
Whether it would be possible to play games at Lily-
dale on NTFA match days - Under 16‘s and/or Un-
der 13‘s.
Would someone from Lilydale be interested in
acting as an assistant to Bridport‘s Under 16‘s
Coach?
Any other ideas.
For any arrangements to work there will have to be
some give and take by both clubs. This seasons under
13‘s games were nearly all on an away basis and to
compensate for this the Lilydale Junior Committee decided a couple of months ago to seek free admission
to games. Cost of travel. Bridport gave us free
admission without being asked, which should work in
their favour next year.
Don Pollard will be at the Lilydale ground on Thursday
nights from 3pm until the 2011 School year ends, if anyone wishes to discuss the matter. He can also be
contacted by phone on 6395 1288
Lilydale Village Market

dance, music, art workshops for children and fun family
activities.
The Belly dancers who performed for the 150th Lily-
dale Anniversary will come back again with their stu-
dents.
On January 15th, Chris Mallory, a mainland contemporary folk musician touring Tasmania, will
perform at the market.

Active Lilydale Fitness Group
Congratulations to all those who have come for their weekly dose of aerobic exercise
and strengthening, toning and balancing
workup! Well done to all of you whether
you came each week or just every few weeks when
The Lilydale Progressive - December 2011 Page 18
you can. We are a group that needs to have
participants to keep going. This means that our Fitness
Instructor comes out from Youngtown each Tuesday
evening for the 7pm start. We need to have 12 - 16 of you coming each week to make it a viable option for
the instructor and for the group to work well as a
whole.
We create energy and enthusiasm when we have that ―critical mass‖ and it makes it more fun, more
enjoyable and strangely but true we all work a bit
harder and make those activities really count.
This helps us to keep active, to ward off stiffness,
obesity, diabetes and other lifestyle illnesses as well as giving us more vitality, energy and a greater feeling of
wellbeing. We get stronger and can do more things
with ease, we can walk up stairs, go hiking or just dig
more garden when we have better core strength and well toned muscles. Given all that, the Group is just a
time to pamper yourself by doing it a good turn, we
have fun and some laughs and don‘t take ourselves too
seriously.
Remember its only one short hour packed with a huge variety of actions and a few light hearted fun activities
to take the hard slog out of it. Our instructor gives
some individual help and instruction as required and
gets to know how to challenge us as individuals. The
time is well spent and is a good way to get some of that necessary exercise in each week that we are all
supposed to have!
The final group session this year will be on December
13, and will resume on Tuesday January 24 at 7pm.
Nathan and Active Lilydale Fitness group wish the
members of the Lilydale community a joyful, peaceful
and bountiful Christmas and a relaxing holiday time.
From 'Meet the Council' at the
Lilydale Village Market.
On Sunday the 20th November in Lilydale I had an
opportunity to meet our Council representatives at the
Lilydale Village Market. Launceston City Council braved the rain which poured down about midday. Deputy
Mayor Jeremy Ball was there - it was his idea to get the
LCC out to visit areas like Lilydale. I had a chance to
talk to the Mayor he told me he was happy that some
consultation had taken place with various people. I raised the issue of Ben Lomond Water's plan which the
Lilydale Progress Association has been concerned with
for some time now. Describing BLW's way of
operating as 'Fascist' {a governmental system led by a dictator having complete power , forcibly suppressing
opposition and criticism} I got the Mayor's attention.
In spite of efforts over time to explain to the Mayor
and Council that BLW had held a public information
session in Lilydale to inform the residents what had been decided on and was subsequently referring to this
meeting and reports conducted by the Council in the
past as 'consultation'. Pointing out to the Mayor that
the LCC was a shareholder in BLW he explained that
"shareholders have no control over what corporations
do".
His suggestion was to contact the Chair of the BLW
Board - Miles Hampton and he would send me the
details.
I thought about this afterwards and wondered if there are people out there who like me think we
are 'shareholders' in our Council. It seemed like that
from our friendly meeting. BLW and it's board is not
elected by us so I am making an appeal to Miles
Hampton the Chairman for his views on 'consultation' with the Lilydale Community and asking why there has
not been any - none.
John Gallagher.
Blackmail
It was coming up to Christmas and Sammy asked his
mum if he could have a new bike. So, she told him that the best idea would be to write to Santa Claus. But
Sam, having just played a vital role in the school nativity
play, said he would prefer to write to the baby Jesus.
So his mum told him that would be fine.
Sam went to his room and wrote ' Dear Jesus, I have been a very good boy and would like to have a bike for
Christmas.' But he wasn't very happy when he read it
over.
So he decided to try again and this time he wrote 'Dear Jesus, I'm a good boy most of the time and would like a
bike for Christmas.' He read it back and wasn't happy
with that one either.
He tried a third version. 'Dear Jesus, I could be a good
boy if I tried hard and especially if I had a new bike.' He read that one too, but he still wasn't satisfied.
So, he decided to go out for a walk while he thought
about a better approach. After a short time he passed a
house with a small statue of the Virgin Mary in the
front garden. He crept in, stuffed the statue under his coat, hurried home and hid it under the bed. Then he
wrote this letter. 'Dear Jesus, If you want to see your
mother again, you'd better send me a new bike.'
The Perfect Gift?
Dear Father Christmas, this Christmas could you
please send me a yellow door. Yours, Sherlock Holmes
Watson: ―So why do you want a yellow door Holmes?‖
Holmes: ―Lemon-entry my dear Watson.‖
Man: ―That train set looks fantastic. I'll take one.‖
Assistant: ―I'm sure your son will love it, Sir!‖ Man: (sighs) ―Oh, yes..... I suppose he would. You'd
better give me two, then.‖

FUND RAISING AT LILYDALE DISTRICT SCHOOL
LILYDALE DISTRICT SCHOOL SNIPPETS Phone: 6395 0100 Fax: 6395 0199 Email: [email protected]
The sun streams down, a slight breeze rustles
the leaves, while inside the students quietly attend to their learning. A normal Spring day
at Lilydale District School. Suddenly, the tranquillity is broken by the distant sound of sirens, whistles and bells. As the intensity increases, it is
obvious that something is on its way through Lilydale and approaching the school. The sound of revving motors blends with the cacophony and now the gaudy coloured cars complete with strange
designs and even stranger occupants round the corner and head into the school grounds.
The students, somewhat bewildered by this invasion complete with water cannons and hair spray, hold back... uncertainty and nervousness guiding their every move. But suddenly, the tense atmosphere is
broken by laughter as both invader and invaded embrace, Elmo, Mad Cow and the Gangster Ladies obviously breaking the ice and leading the way for others to connect with the students.
This was the scene on Wednesday, 19 October when VARIETY TASBASH came to town. And what a
visit it was! For 45 minutes the Variety Volunteers treated us to a wonderful time. We wandered
around the cars; marvelled at their design; talked with the crazy characters; and dodged the water
cannons. We shared a BBQ with them and thanked them for their generosity - $2,000 for notebook computers to help some of us with our work.
Thank you TASBASH, not only for your generosity to Lilydale District School, but also for the valuable
work that you all do right around the state... you are TASMANIAN HEROES.
EQUESTRIAN TEAM
Claire Garden, Chelsea Nixon, Emily Nixon
and Kiyomi Roe Bose recently competed in
the Interschools‘ Dressage completion at Powranna. All the riders did a great job and
no one incurred any errors of course and all rode very well. The horses, riders and
mothers represented the school with pride and were a pleasure to spend the day with.
Samantha Sward came and helped out, which
was fantastic.
Claire and Apache put in a wonderful performance, under immense pressure, to
place second. We farewell Claire and
Apache, and Allira Williams from Lilydale
Equestrian Team as Claire and Allira finish
Grade 10 this year. They have competed successfully over many years for the school.
Bandanna day
The SRC sold Bandannas on Friday, 28 October, 2011 and
the school community raised $348.00 for the charity
CanTeen.
UNICEF Day For Change
Recently also, the students from 7/8 Marshall asked everyone to wear casual clothes and support
UNICEF. They raised $287.00, which will go towards helping more East Timorese children attend school.
THANK YOU TO ALL THOSE WHO
ORGANISED THESE EVENTS AND ALSO TO THOSE WHO SUPPORTED THESE GREAT
CAUSES.

What can help you sleep?
Have a calming bedtime routine such as; a warm (but
not hot) bath, a warm milk drink and light snack,
listening to peaceful music, reading for a while and/or slow deep breathing.
If you are unable to fall asleep within 20 minutes of
going to bed, get up and only return to bed when you
feel sleepy. If you wake in the night and can‘t get back to sleep within 20 minutes, get up and only return to
bed when you feel sleepy. Write down your worries or
problems and decide to deal with them in the morning.
Do something relaxing or repeat your calming bedtime
routine. It may take several weeks of this program to establish a good sleeping habit.
Only use your bed for sleep and sex. No work or TV
in the bedroom.
Sleeping tablets have a limited role in managing sleep problems. They can be quite effective at inducing sleep,
but they can cause dependence. If used every night you
may find that you can‘t sleep without them, and
gradually you need to take more tablets to give you a
good sleep. If used only occasionally, they can be very helpful by giving you a good night‘s sleep. This is the
best way to use sleeping tablets – only sometimes.
Some herbal preparations like valerian and chamomile
may help with relaxation and sleeping.
Lilydale Online Access Centre
The end of another year and it‘s been a full one at the Access Centre. We‘ve helped people with questions
about buying computers, using the internet, creating
photo montages and slideshows, using their laptops,
getting to grips with all the new Office software out
there, graphics, audio, iTunes and Ebay.
One thing‘s for sure if we don‘t know the answer to
your questions we‘ll definitely have some ideas about
how to find out!
As usual the Centre will be closed for 2 weeks over
the Christmas period. We will close at 6pm on Friday 24th December and reopen at 2pm on Tuesday 10th
January 2012.
Christmas Websites are the flavour of this month, from

Sleeping problems in adults
Some people need a lot less sleep than others. The
average is 8 hours but the range is 4 to 10 hours sleep
at night. About a third of all adults have sleeping
problems.
Sleeping problems can be caused by many things;
Pain: Try taking pain relievers before bed.
Cramp: Try massaging legs or taking magnesium
tablets before bed.
Sleep Apnoea: (a condition that causes a person to stop breathing for short periods while sleeping). This
needs medical assistance and perhaps a sleep apnoea
machine to use while sleeping.
Snoring: This can be a sign of sleep apnoea or nasal
constriction requiring medical investigation.
Stress, depression, anxiety or worry: Finding ways of
resolving issues and treating depression will resolve
the sleep problems.
Having daytime naps: This usually means that you wont need as much sleep during the night, so you may
need to go to bed later or get up earlier. If you want to
sleep longer at night, then avoid the day time napping.
Not enough physical exercise: Try regular gentle
exercise, walking or gardening, but not within an hour or so of going to bed.
Comfort: Make sure the bedroom is not too hot,
cold, stuffy, noisy or light. The bed should not be too
hard, soft or lumpy.
Food/drugs: In the evening avoid caffeine (tea, coffee,
cola, energy drinks) nicotine, alcohol. A very empty or
very full stomach may reduce sleep..
Getting up in the night to go to the toilet
disturbs sleep: Reduce the number of evening drinks. Older men may have prostate enlargement which
results in frequent night time visits to the toilet. This
condition can be treated successfully.
Over-stimulation in the evening by working,
exercise, TV or radio can cause sleep problems: try relaxation therapy in the evenings. Progressive
muscle relaxation is performed by focusing on each
part of the body separately, and gradually relaxing and
allowing to become heavy. Mental imagery can be used to focus on a pleasant image and retaining it for as long
as possible while breathing evenly. Yoga and Tai Chi
can be very helpful.
If you wake up coughing or wheezing,
then you may have nocturnal asthma and need to see your doctor.
