YOUTH NEWS

Musings from a youth director

What If........

Wow that could be followed by so many things especially in today’s world. What if the president stopped tweeting (ha ha)! What if the Browns managed to somehow win a Super Bowl? What if I dye my hair pink?

What if the world was actually flat? What if we all cared as much for our neighbor as we do ourselves? What if there was no more racism in our society? Yep, all interesting thought provoking questions, how-ever here is one I want you to think about.

What if we challenged our teens to DO HARD THINGS! What if we stopped giving them excuses for not doing and challenge them to challenge themselves!

So I am challenging you to step up and be bold, to say to this generation you are the ones who will do hard things and do them well. We will no longer give excuses but give encouragement. We will empower them to share the gospel and walk with them on the often difficult path of faith. We will pray for them and with them. But first we need to equip ourselves!

I am asking you to join me in a small group to discuss the book “DO HARD THINGS” by Alex and Brett Harris. So then we can learn together to challenge them and grow together in our faith as one body of Christ.

Join in on this opportunity so that instead of us saying “What if” we start doing!

When: Third Tuesdays starting May 16

Where: Shore House Tavern 306 W Water St Sandusky

Youth and Family upcoming events

April 24 @ 3pm anyone interested is welcome to join myself and others at Mr. Smith’s coffee house to discuss the upcoming youth gathering and other possible topics

On April 27 at 6:00 pm @ St. John’s in Bellevue there will be a meeting to discuss the forming of a youth leadership board for the eastern conference. This board will help plan events including a rather large event we are hoping to organize and hold in 2019.

Starting on May 16 we will be hosting a small group to discuss the book “Do Hard Things” by Alex and Brett Harris. See full page write up.

Our candidate’s hiring could be contingent on her being hired in Huron.

Call Committee Report for April

The call committee has conducted two interviews so far this year. Both candidates ended up not being a fit

for our congregation at this time. This does not reflect poorly on our congregation nor does it reflect poorly

on the pool of candidates. It has more to do with fit and the Holy Spirit. We have been on both sides of the

process. In one case the committee could not come to a decision that would have put the candidate forward,

and in the other the candidate wanted to withdraw their name from further consideration.

We have been in contact with the synod and know that they have interviews scheduled for the last week of

March, and the first week of April. This bodes well for us in that we may receive a name to interview by the

middle of April. Just so you know we interview each and every person that is submitted to us. We have

done interviews in person and over SKYPE. Our interviews last 2-3 hours and in one case we followed up

with a second interview of a couple of hours.

I surely ask that you pray for our congregations call process, and I will assure you that your Call Committee

will stay the course to bring forth a candidate that God has in store for us.

FROM THE PASTOR

Easter People,

The first Easter was a day that transformed Jesus inner circle of men and women into people who

were alive with stories to tell, with enthusiasm and spirit that has continued through centuries. Jesus

nurtured these people in discipleship. Following the first Easter they were convinced of their calling

and purpose. Discipleship has been key to the church surviving enormous challenges. When com-

munist governments began to fall in the 1980’s and 90’s we learned of faith communities in these

countries that had survived serious attempts to destroy them.

It is clear, after less than a year in office that Bishop Daniel Beaudoin of our Northwestern Ohio

Synod is all about Discipleship. He sites the example of family, colleagues and friends who nurtured

him. It became a primary focus when he served congregations as pastor. What a great course to set as

we navigate the challenges of being the church in our time and place.

Discipleship is believing that we are called and sent to share the gospel with others and to be the presence of Christ in the world, following Jesus by living the faith practices. These

words come from the website of our synod www.nwos-elca.church. I went to the website, clicked on

“Resources” and then “Discipleship Central” and found all kinds of helps for being and nurturing

disciples that included Bible Studies, testimonies, retreats, coaching and others.

We have had a long history of thinking of ourselves as members of the church. Thinking of ourselves

as Disciples takes that idea to another level. As Holy Week and the Easter Season approach we will

walk with Jesus and the disciples from life to death to new life. Let’s make it a time for us to connect

with the changes in people in the story and what our own lives of being and nurturing disciples can

mean for us and those around us.

Think I’ll be searching the Sunday readings for insights into discipleship. Lord teach me to follow

and to lead as your disciple.

Your Partner in ministry,

Pastor Merlin Jacobs

Interim Pastor
