T ITLE : ENERGY TRANSFORMATIONS & F ORMS OF E NERGY Slide 2 L UMINOUS VS. NONLUMINOUS OBJECTS Luminous Sources of Light: Objects that produce light (For example: Sun, Light bulb, Fire, and Lightning) Nonluminous Sources of Light: Objects that reflect or scatter light (For example: Moon, Mirror, and Road signs) Slide 3 E NERGY, W ORK & P OWER Energy is the ability to do work or cause change. Work is done when a force moves an object. When an object does work on another object, some of its energy is transferred to that object. You can think of work as the transfer of energy. Power is the rate at which energy is transferred Power= Energy Transferred/Time Slide 4 K INETIC E NERGY Kinetic energy is the energy an object has due to its motion. The kinetic energy of an object depends on both its mass and its velocity. Kinetic energy increases when mass increases or when velocity increases. Slide 5 P OTENTIAL E NERGY An object does not have to be moving to have energy. Some object have stored energy as a result of their positions or shapes. Potential energy is the stored energy that results from the position or shape of an object. This energy has the potential to do work. Slide 6 E NERGY TRANSFORMATIONS Energy Transformations- Energy can be changed from one form to another. Law of Conservation of Energy- Energy cannot be created or destroyed, but only changed from one form into another or transferred from one object to another. Slide 7 Mechanical Energy- Mechanical Energy- The form of energy associated with the position and motion of an object. Mechanical Energy= Potential Energy + Kinetic Energy An object with mechanical energy can do work on another object. You can think of mechanical energy as the ability to do work. More mechanical energy= more work an object can do. Slide 8 The atoms and molecules of an object are always constantly in motion, they have kinetic energy. These particles are arranged in specific ways in different objects. Thermal energy Thermal energy -The total potential and kinetic energy of the particles in an object. Slide 9 Chemical energy- Chemical energy- potential energy stored in the chemical bonds that hold chemical compounds together. Slide 10 Nuclear energy- Nuclear energy- type of potential energy stored in the nucleus of an atom. Slide 11 Electromagnetic energy- Electromagnetic energy- the energy of light and other forms of radiation Travels in waves Has some electrical and magnetic properties Slide 12 Electrical energy- Electrical energy- the energy of electrical charges Depending on whether the charges are moving or stored, electrical energy can be a form of potential or kinetic energy
