PAT DAYPatrick Alan “Pat” Day was born in Brush, Colorado on October 13, 1953. Early on, Day recognized he loved sports and had a very competitive nature. Despite his small and wiry physique, Day found a way to indulge his affinity for athletics and competition by joining his high school’s wrestling program, where he won the state championship in his weight category. After high school, his daredevil nature and natural abilities led him to try his hand at rodeo bull riding on the local circuit. It was - by his own admission - not a successful career move.

His dreams took him in a different and immensely profitable direction when he started riding thoroughbreds, chalking up his first win in 1973 at Prescott Downs, Arizona. Unhampered by the weight issues with which so many jockeys struggle, Day quickly climbed the ranks in the Midwest. By the late 70’s he was at the top of the national standings and began his run as leading rider at Churchill Downs, one that may never be equaled. However, the flagrant excesses of fame and fortune threatened his personal life and reputation on and off the track.

His racing career over the next three decades reads like a jockey’s textbook on success. Day won the heralded Kentucky Derby with longshot Lil E. Tee in 1992 - one of his nine winning individual Triple Crown winning mounts, that include such greats as Summer Squall, Tank’s Prospect and Louis Quatorze. He is the top money winning jockey in Breeders Cup history, riding Unbridled, Wild Again, Cat Thief, and Awsome Again to wins in the Breeders Cup Classic and is the only jockey to have ridden in the first 21 years of the event. His list of champion mounts comprise Canadian Triple Crown winner Dance Smartly, Flanders, Tabasco Cat, With Anticipation, and 1968 Horse of the Year , Lady’s Secret. His personal pick for the best horse he ever rode was Easy Goer, a son of Alydar, who faced his own version of Affirmed in Charlie Whittingham’s Sunday Silence. The two rivals squared off in the ‘89 Triple Crown, with Sunday Silence winning the Derby and the Preakness and Easy Goer turning the tables in the Belmont Stakes with a dominating 14 length victory.

In 2005, Day had hip surgery that forced him to miss the Derby for the first time in 21 years. After a brief return to racing, Day did some personal soul searching at a cabin retreat and made the decision to retire and devote himself to his spiritual calling. On August 3, 2005, Day traded in his tack for a new position as industry representative and ambassador for the Racetrack Chaplaincy. He now divides his time enjoying his family and home near Louisville, Kentucky and spreading the Gospel at tracks, colleges, and churches worldwide. Day has not lost his competitive edge, however, as in October 2008 he returned to Santa Anita Park to ride in the widely anticipated “Legends” race, reuniting him with his old rivals and friends among the jockeys’ retired elite.

Day’s professional honors include four Eclipse Awards and induction into the National Museum of Racing’s Hall of Fame in 1991. He won the George Woolf Memorial Jockey Award in 1985 and the Mike Venizia Memorial Award in 1995 for “extraordinary sportsmanship and citizenship.” His superlative career reflects his prodigious success, tempered with humility, compassion, and honor at the highest level of the game.

JACINTO VASQUEZVasquez began riding in his native Panama in 1959 at the age of 15 and was instantly successful. After becoming the country’s leading apprentice, he arrived in the United States in 1960 and within a few years was making a name for himself. By the late 1960s, Vasquez had picked up rides on champions like Furl Sail, Old Hat, Silent Screen, and Straight Deal. In 1970, he joined forces with agent Harold “Fats” Weissman and his career took off. He won the 1970 Travers with Loud and began visiting the winner’s circle after major races on a more regular basis.

Three years later, Vasquez was at the center of one racing’s most stunning upsets when he guided Onion to victory over Triple Crown champion Secretariat in the 1973 Whitney at Saratoga. In 1974, he rode Foolish Pleasure to victory in the Grade 1 Sapling and then re-united with him to capture the Grade 2 Cowdin and Grade 1 Champagne to conclude a campaign that earned the J.L. Greer-owned, Leroy Jolley-trained colt the Eclipse Award as the year’s champion 2-year-old male.

Meanwhile, Vasquez rode a precocious 2-year-old filly named Ruffian and guided her to a 15-length maiden win and subsequent stakes wins in the Fashion and Sorority. Vince Bracciale Jr. rode Ruffian to victory in the Spinaway and Astoria, yet as 1975 dawned Vasquez was in the enviable position of being the regular rider of both the champion 2-year-old colt and filly.Foolish Pleasure won the Flamingo in his first stakes try at 3, but then suffered a shocking defeat when he finished third in the Florida Derby at 1-5 odds. A victory in the Wood Memorial restored faith in the son of What a Pleasure and two weeks later, Foolish Pleasure won the Kentucky Derby as a 9-5 favorite. Two weeks after that, Foolish Pleasure finished second by a length in the Preakness, ending his Triple Crown bid, and then was second by a neck in the Belmont.

Ruffian, though, kept on winning. Owned by the Locust Hill Farm of Stuart S. Janney Jr. and Barbara Phipps Janney and trained by Frank Whiteley Jr., she swept the New York Racing Association’s Triple Tiara of the Acorn, Mother Goose and Coaching Club American Oaks, making her a perfect 10-for-10 in her brilliant career, and she was hailed as the sport’s biggest star.

Vasquez was the leading jockey at Calder five times, in the seasons ending in 1973, 1974, 1980, 1981, and 1991. Over his 37-year career, he raced 37,392 times, winning 14% of his races. When he retired in 1996, he was 15th on the all-time wins list for jockeys. He was elected to the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame in 1998 and the Calder Hall of Fame in 1999.Since retiring as a jockey, Jacinto Vasquez has remained in racing and is now training horses in Ocala, Florida.

SHANNON SHARPEPro Football Hall of Fame, Class of 2011.Celebrity Appearance in all of the Turf Club Packages, Aristides Lounge and Affirmed Lounge.

The Denver Broncos selected Shannon Sharpe out of Savannah State in the seventh round of the 1990 NFL Draft. He retired 14 seasons later as the all-time leader in catches, yards and touchdowns by a tight end.

His breakout year came during his third season when he led the Broncos in receiving with 53 catches for 640 yards to earn his first of eight Pro Bowl nods. Other than an injury-shortened 1999 campaign, Sharpe never caught less than 60 passes in a season for the remainder of his career.

In 1993, he was named first-team All-Pro for the first of four times after catching 81 passes for 995 yards and scoring 9 touchdowns. He followed that performance with a career-high 87 receptions in 1994.

Sharpe left the Broncos in 2000 and signed with the Baltimore Ravens as an unrestricted free agent. It was while with Baltimore in 2001 that Sharpe surpassed Hall of Famer Ozzie Newsome to become the NFL’s record holder for receptions and receiving yards by a tight end. After two seasons with the Ravens he returned to Denver and played two final years with the Broncos. He became the career leader in touchdowns by a tight end in his final season. All three career marks have since been surpassed. Sharpe’s final career numbers read 815 receptions for 10,060 yards and 62 TDs. Ten times he had 60 or more catches including three 80-catch seasons. Sharpe eclipsed the 1,000-yard mark three times and twice had 10 TDs in a season.

He played in 204 regular season games and started in four AFC championship games. He was the starting tight end in Denver’s back-to-back Super Bowl titles (XXXII and XXXIII) and the Ravens’ Super Bowl XXXV victory.

Sharpe’s 96-yard touchdown reception in the 2000 AFC Championship Game came on a short pass from Trent Dilfer on third-and-18. The tight end streaked up the middle untouched for the game’s first and only touchdown which proved to be all that the Ravens needed to secure its first AFC championship and Super Bowl berth. The play remains the longest TD catch in NFL playoff history.

Sharpe led the Broncos in receiving six times and the Ravens once. He was named first-team All-Pro and All-AFC in 1993, 1996, 1997 and 1998 and was selected to the NFL’s All-Decade Team of the 1990

THURMAN THOMASPro Football Hall of Fame, Class of 2007. Celebrity Appearance in all of the Turf Club Packages, Aristides Lounge and Affirmed Lounge.

Thurman Thomas slipped to the second round of the 1988 National Football League Draft due to concern about a knee injury he had suffered during his senior year at Oklahoma State. The Buffalo Bills, who had no first round pick that year, selected Thomas, an All-America running back, in the second round with the 40th overall pick.

In 1989, after an impressive rookie season that included a division title for the Bills, the multi-dimensional Thomas rushed for 1,000 yards, caught 60 passes, and scored 12 touchdowns in his second season.

His ability to catch the ball as well as run with it was a key ingredient to the Bills’ “No Huddle” offensive attack. The team improved to 13-3 in 1990 as Thomas led the NFL in all-purpose yards. He rushed for 1,297 yards and scored 11 touchdowns while catching 49 passes for 532 yards and two touchdowns. With the versatile back leading the way, the Bills marched through the playoffs to the first of their unprecedented four straight Super Bowl berths.

Thomas rushed for 100 yards in each of the playoff games that post-season including Super Bowl XXV when he gained 135 yards on just 15 carries and scored on a 31-yard run early in the fourth quarter. He also had 5 receptions for 55 yards.

In 1991, Thomas amassed more than 2,000 all-purpose yards, just the 11th player ever to do so. His league-leading yardage output included 1,407 yards on the ground and an additional 631 yards on a career-high 62 receptions. He scored 12 touchdowns. He reached the 2,000-yard total again the following season which marked a record fourth straight season of leading the NFL in yards from scrimmage.

Named to the NFL’s All-Decade Team of the 1990s, Thomas was selected first- or second-team All-Pro and All-AFC five times, and was voted to the Pro Bowl five straight years. Thomas retired as the NFL’s ninth ranked rusher with 12,074 yards and added another 4,458 yards on 472 catches. He scored 65 rushing and 23 receiving touchdowns in his 13-season career.

WARREN MOONPro Football Hall of Fame, Class of 2006. Celebrity Appearance in all of the Turf Club Packages, Aristides Lounge and Affirmed Lounge.

Prior to the 1978 NFL Draft, some NFL scouts suggested that since University of Washington quarterback Warren Moon had played in a rollout rather than a drop-back passing offense, he would be a mid-round pick. Others speculated that since only one African American quarterback, James Harris, had achieved any measurable success in the NFL, Moon would have to play some other position. Regardless of which misguided reason motivated NFL scouts, Moon remained confident of his abilities and opted to sign with the Edmonton Eskimos of the Canadian Football League. He went on to lead the Eskimos to an unprecedented five consecutive Grey Cup victories. Eventually, Moon returned to the United States to play for the Houston Oilers in 1984. He racked up nearly 50,000 passing yards in 17 NFL seasons. Moon set a new club record with 3,338 yards passing in his first year with the Houston, a mark he would break four more times. In 1986, when the Oilers installed the run-and-shoot offense, Moon’s quarterback skills finally became apparent to all. The wide-open offense showcased Moon’s strong arm, running skills, and big-play ability. In 1990, Moon led the league with 4,689 passing yards. He also led the league in attempts (584), completions (362), and touchdowns (33), and tied Dan Marino’s record with nine 300-yard games in a season. The following year, he again led the league in passing yards 4,690. At the same time, he joined Hall of Fame quarterbacks Dan Marino and Dan Fouts as the only quarterbacks to post back-to-back 4,000-yard seasons. Moon also established new NFL records that season with 655 attempts and 404 completions. Moon was traded to the Minnesota Vikings before the 1994 season. In his debut season he passed for 4,264 yards and led the team to the playoffs. In his second season in Minnesota, he again passed for more than 4,200 yards. Moon moved on to the Seattle Seahawks as a free agent in 1997 where the veteran star set franchise records for completions (313) and yards passing (3,678) and earned his ninth Pro Bowl selection. Injuries limited his play in 1998. In 1999, Moon joined the Kansas City Chiefs and spent two seasons as a backup there before retiring. Despite spending his first six professional seasons in the CFL, Moon ranked third all-time in NFL passing yardage and fourth in touchdown passes thrown at the time of his retirement.
