LET’S GO LOCAL!POP Hypothermia Week is December 23-30, 2018

Prince of Peace has been partnering with FACETS to serve our homeless neighbors for 9 years. Each year we open our church home for one week, to those who need a warm, safe place to sleep. The shelter opens at 5:00 pm each evening. Guests receive a hot meal prepared by our Meal Teams and enjoy fellowship with our members. We also provide breakfast the next morning and a sack lunch to go. The shelter closes at 7:30 am each morning. We typically serve over 250 guests throughout the week. This year we are allowing guests to stay all day on our campus on Christmas Day so we will also need volunteers to volunteer to come in throughout the day. How You Can Serve? (continued on page 3)

Our sermon theme, Christ Be My Leader, continues in November by focusing on Hebrew prophets, some captured in stories, some in poetry and song. Elishah, Micah, Isaiah and Jeremiah will provide the primary lessons for preaching. They will urge us to follow the Messiah and Savior of all, Jesus, long before he is born.

Voter’s Assembly UpdateAt a Voters Assembly held on Sunday, October 21, voters in attendance voted to call Vicar Rob Winston as Assistant Pastor in the ministry area for Spanish speaking at Prince of Peace. Vicar Rob is part of the SMP (Specific Ministry Pastor) program. This call represents a fulfillment of the desire Prince of Peace expressed two years ago when members voted to support candidates in the SMP program. Vicar Rob will continue his studies and become a fully ordained pastor next year. We thank God for the gifts Vicar Rob brings to our congregation and community.

The weekend of October 21-22, the voters of POP, via bulletin insert, also affirmed by 90 yes and 14 no votes to the recommendations of The Capital Campaign Tithe Distribution Committee.

Christ’s Care for Children in Kenya will recieve $31,750 to provide boarding school aimed at helping some of the poorest of the poor children in rural Kenya and $31,750 will be given to the Care and Outreach Ministry at POPLC for use in connection with local area evangelical outreach and social ministries that are supported by POPLC or the SED. The Care and Outreach Lay Ministry Team will determine the process for decision making for distribution of monies.

POP Communicator Page 2 NOVEMBER 2018

Senior Pastor Call Committee UpdateThe Senior Pastor Call Committee (SPCC) has submitted the Congregational Profile and Nomination Forms for Senior Pastor to the Southeastern District (SED). The next steps of the Call Process (Steps 4-6) describe the work to be done by those in the SED office. It is good to remember that the SED office is involved in helping churches and people who have been affected by Hurricanes Florence and Michael and that there are other churches in our District that also are in the process of calling a pastor. While the SED completes its steps, the SPCC will begin planning for Steps 7 and 8. This planning involves reviewing survey responses from the congregation and determining themes from listening posts, while continuing to pray for discernment. The SPCC will also meet with PoP ministry teams to listen to input and suggestions and work on determining questions to ask during candidate phone interviews and planning for the time when candidates come to visit PoP. Please continue to join us and the Prince of Peace Prayer Committee in praying for Holy Spirit guidance and patience for the SPCC, the congregation, our staff, our Vacancy Pastor, our Circuit Visitor, and our next Senior Pastor. As always, questions or concerns can be shared at any time with BoSL at [email protected] or at a monthly BoSL Sunday Listening Forum or a bi-monthly (on the odd-numbered months) Saturday Listening Forum.

News from the iNeighborhood POC Mission FieldOver the past two months, iNeighborhood Points of Contact (aka Points of Care) have been reaching out to their neighborhood networks in many different ways. One POC brought goodie bags to all their neighbors, and in the same day received a thank you note. Another POC even brought his son with him to visit his neighbors. God is on the move! The iNeighborhood Network is all about connections. Connecting Prince of Peace members to one another is an example of how we live out the call of Christ to care and serve on another. In some cases, it’s a reconnection. One POC met with a Prince of Peace neighbor who is retired but serves as a prayer partner. He was delighted by the visit and being asked for prayer, he even reminisced about being visited by POP’s founding Pastor Ralph Weichman in the 1970s. Every week more and more people are becoming POCs. We are also adding more dots to the map, though the physical map isn’t as current as the digital version. Check it out by room 26 (by the library)! If you don’t have a dot on the map yet, please contact me, [email protected]. We can get you on the digital map. We had someone from Oktoberfest ask to get their dot on the map. The same day I told them their dot was on the map, Stacey Crosson told me that someone in that neighborhood volunteered to be their POC. God is working! God is on the move! Join us in the movement of God’s work among us! ~David Mahen, POP Care & Outreach Lay Leader [email protected]

Hypothermia 2018 (continued from page 1)Shelter Volunteers make the week happen and jump in wherever needed. Each day has four shifts:• Shift 1 - 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm • Shift 2 - 8:00 pm to 12:00 pm • Shift 3 - 12:00 pm to 4:30 am • Shift 4 - 4:30 am to 7:30 am Youth Volunteer Teams support the Sunday Set up and daily cleaning of the fellowship hall and sleeping rooms. Food Donations: The week depends on the generosity of those who shop for and donate the many food items needed to serve our guests. Choose a few or as many items on the list and deliver on the date noted. [email protected]

Warm Clothing NeededWe will be collecting warm clothing for our Hypothermia shelter guests. Please consider donating new or gently used jackets, sweatshirts, sweaters, pants, jeans, scarves, gloves, etc. All sizes appreciated, for adults only, men and women. Thank you! The collection box will be in the narthex from December 1 – 23rd. As you consider gifts for family and friends, please consider a gift of clothing or outer wear for our Hypothermia guests who could use something new or new to them. Sue Sweet at [email protected]

Faith Shapers Book Study GroupTuesday, November 27, 7-9pm, Room 9Faith Shapers will discuss The Emotionally Healthy Church by Peter Scazzero. This book tells the story of the author’s church, which seemed to have it all—but beneath the surface, circumstances were about to boil over, forcing him to confront needs that went deeper than imagined. What

Scazzaro learned about the vital link between emotional health, relational depth, and spiritual maturity can shed new light on problems in your own church. Looking ahead, we’ll discuss a book of the Bible, 1 Samuel, on January 22. Jennifer Gross [email protected]

Thank You Boy Scouts!Nick Daniel and Will Letvin chose to bless Prince of Peace with their Eagle Scout projects. Nick Daniel, Troop 1145 and several of our adults, including; Dan Dove, landscaping architect, Aivars Baumanis, head of the POP properties committee, POP member Tom Beasley, and Attilio Cruz, building maintenance specialist, participated in some very heavy labor to make the beautiful retaining wall that you see as you leave the West entrance from the Sanctuary. No less work went into the gorgeous garden planted by Will Letvin, Troop 1145, and his family. You will see the garden as you walk out of the North side of the building.

Prince of Peace Concert Series November 18th | 3 PM Barclay Brass // December 16 | 4 PM Prince of Peace Christmas Concert // April 27 | 8 PM Oh My Son // May 16 | 7:30 PM HIMnals Blessings Concert

Prince of Peace is excited to announce a new concert series featuring both outside music groups and our own music ensembles. The series brings us an opportunity to share wonderful music with both our congregation and members of our community.

Leading the series on November 18th at 3 PM is the Barclay Brass. The 15 member ensemble is comprised of some of Washington DC’s top brass musicians. Barclay Brass members perform with premier military bands, major symphony orchestras, and are in demand as freelancers all over the country.

On December 16th at 4 PM we will hold our annual Christmas Concert featuring all of our ensembles, soloists, and guests.

Thank you to our Veterans!

Prince of Peace will honor all Veterans for their service at our worship services on November 10 and 11.

We invite all veterans to wear their military uniforms (if possible) to our services. If your uniform is no longer serviceable (or doesn’t fit), we encourage veterans (and others) to wear our National colors-red, white, or blue. We thank you for your service. We are proud of all you have done for our Nation! Heavenly Father, we give thanks to You

for our freedoms. We especially thank You for the brave men and women who have given their lives to help keep those freedoms. We ask that You would bless them and their families for their sacrifices and protect those that are still on the front lines. As You say in Your word, “Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” (Joshua 1:9)

2018 Wreaths Across America Fundraiser Wreaths Across America (WAA) is a non-profit organization that provides wreaths, to participating Veteran’s cemeteries all over the country. Each December on National Wreaths Across America Day, there are coordinated wreath-laying ceremonies at Arlington National Cemetery, and over 1,400 other Veteran’s Cemeteries Worldwide. Our family has been raising money for WAA, since 2012. This year, we are collecting donations for WAA as a partnership fundraiser that also

supports our Student Ministry going to the LCMS National Youth Gathering. So, remember our veterans and fallen heroes by donating whatever you are able to our POPLC collection. $15 sponsors one wreath, however we welcome any and all donations.

We will be in the Narthex, Veteran’s Day Weekend (November 10 & 11), in support of the WAA Veteran’s Day campaign. We’ll collect donations, and thank our Veterans at the same time. Please consider donating to this great cause. Blessings & Peace, The Oakley’s (Suzanne, Jeff, Evan and Erin) [email protected] 703-690-7374

Dear Prince of Peace Congregation We would like to take a moment of your time to thank you all for the myriad prayers, kind and supportive words, and generosity to our family over these past 7 months. We firmly believe that your kindness and thoughtfulness convinced the Lord to glance our way and for Him to send His Angels to comfort my family and myself and to start my recovery. Many weeks, I envisioned Angels in my room, by my bedside, smiling down on me as I recovered. I still have a bit more rehabilitation to go but can walk now nearly unaided and each day gain more strength and confidence. We cannot express how grateful we are to you our Prince of Peace family. During the most difficult weeks, you showed how exceptional the Prince of Peace congregation can be when it comes to the aid of one of your own. Finally, we thank you for what you continue to do for us. You make a significant difference in our lives. The Sinclitico family - Nancy, Julie, Beth, Greg

I would sincerely like to thank the family of POP for the cards and words of sympathy expressed after the recent death of my brother, Louis. The prayers and concern of POP members sustained us both during his illness and hospitalizations. May you continue to be blessed with caring.Blessings,Wanda Johnson

AGE 55+? COME BE A SPARKLER!WHO ARE THE SPARKLERS? They’re a group of members and friends of Prince of Peace, formed 21 years ago (Mar 7,1997 by Pastor Lohrman), open and free to EVERYONE aged 55+, married or single, retired or still working, who want to SPARKLE and add SPARKLE to their lives. Betty Mills, retired from DLA, has been a SPARKLER since it began, and Mary Fletcher, retired realtor, and Gerda Gerber are also among longtime members. Roger Burd and Nelson Latona are current SPARKLER “cheer”leaders, ensuring communication of upcoming events, illnesses, deaths, known needs, and other important news is emailed or sent to known members. WHAT do SPARKLERS do and WHEN and WHY? SPARKLERS meet (dress is casual) from September through mid-June for Bible Study (NO homework!) 1 HOUR on Mondays (except holidays) from 11:00 AM to Noon, currently led by Pastor Tim, to grow spiritually in the Word and in fellowship. SPARKLERS also gather the 3rd Friday of the month

for a potluck lunch or a special outing somewhere to celebrate a season or theme, socialize, learn, have fun connecting, and laugh. It’s NOT necessary to attend both the Bible study and the monthly luncheon, or even be present every month, to be a SPARKLER. The SPARKLERS Monday Bible class has also embraced the mission ministry of sponsoring school youth in Haiti. WHERE do SPARKLERS gather? Monday Bible study is in the comfy chairs of the church library, always accompanied by coffee/tea, snack, and an opening joke to make everyone SPARKLE and chuckle. The monthly luncheon is often in the church fellowship hall, or may be at the home of a SPARKLER, or at a local restaurant. Special lunch and program outings are at church or in NOVA or DC or beyond, with music and/or presentations by entertainers and subject or service experts in the community. In past years SPARKLERS have enjoyed day trips to the Bavarian Chef in Fredericksburg for Oktoberfest, to Bethlehem, PA, and to Radio City Music Hall in NYC for Christmas and Easter shows, and to DC for concerts and museum tours. So, if you are 55+, please come--an open invitation--to Bible study Monday

at 11:00 AM , enjoy this welcoming, friendly group, and your life will be sure to SPARKLE a little brighter! And please, no matter what age you are, join us December 21, at 11:00am in the Fellowship Hall for our special holiday luncheon when we will have Christmas Caroling with Pastor Tim and yummy holiday treats! It’s a great way to come and get to know The SPARKLERS! Look for the SPARKLERS sign-up sheet at Bible study or in the church front hallway, or call Roger (703-971-5957) or Nelson (703-978-1579) to indicate that you’ll be coming. If you know of a person who is 55+ please share this article with them and let them know they are invited.

What is Stephen Ministry?Stephen Ministry is made up of congregation members who receive 50 hours of training in order to provide high-quality, one-to-one Christian care to people going through tough times. A Stephen Minister usually provides care to one person at a time, meeting with that person once a week for about an hour. Twice a month, Stephen Ministers gather with their

Evan Balleweg is the Operations Manager at Concordia University in Seward, Nebraska. The Center for Liturgical Art is “comitted to creating art for worship and witness, while advocating for visual arts

in Christian life and practice.” (quote from https://liturgicalart.org/) The central gold cross represents the finished work of Christ and the eternal promise of grace and forgiven sin. The inner wooden surround reminds us of the Old Rugged Cross and the price paid for our salvation through Him. Green Mosiac reminds us of our ongoing growth and life through the grace of Jesus Christ. The colors (red, blue, green, purple and white)will change in accordance to the liturgical calendar. The outer wooden surround suggests the movement of grace and provision, God’s love extending to all through His finished work on the cross. We give thanks to God for the beautiful art and what it brings to mind.

Oktoberfest Thank you!Thank you to our Oktoberfest Leadership Team and all the volunteers who gave of their time and heart to this year's Oktoberfest neighborhood block party! We are so grateful for your service. It's estimated that over 500 people from the community attended in addition to our POP and school families. The love of Jesus was on the move in the neighborhood! We want to especially give glory to God and thank Dennis Schultz and the POP Communications Team who did an exceptional job of sharing the Oktoberfest message of UP-IN-OUT and for all the lives it impacted. And thank you to our members who invited neighbors and friends. We pray these relationships will be strengthened and nurtured in Christ in the weeks ahead. A final thank you goes out to our Oktoberfest partners: Giant, Cardinal Plaza Shell, Ledos Pizza, Safe Harbor Christian Counseling, Bogacki Dental, Cosmo Cleaners, Positive Image, Class 520 Thai Ice Cream, Afghan House, Faces by Arla, Massage Envy, and Powerfull Fitness.
