President’s Letter
Wow, Wow, and Wow!! The Gourdfest was wonderful this year and the best part of all
was the way our society members pitched in and helped. It was so wonderful to see so
many people helping with the little and big jobs that make the Gourdfest successful.
Many thanks go to Dennis McDonald for the wonderful articles he sent in to the local
magazines and papers and for putting out posters. Dennis also did a good job of an-
nouncing and keeping the Gourdfest provided with music. Reggie did a great job in head-
ing up the Competition Area and keeping every gourd and everybody where they be-
longed. We had 169 competition entries with 23 artists participating. I think we have
some of the best gourd artist in the southeast (but then again, I am prejudice).
What would we have done without, Troy, that rolled out tables for classes, set up exten-
sion cords, brought out chairs for classes, put away extra tables, set up tables for dinner,
picked up boards from Home Depot to use for the competition area, picked up rented
tables and returned them, set up the area for the Artist Association and every morning he
swept out and cleaned the bathrooms. That is only a few of the jobs that come with the
Chairman of the show “Title”. Thank You Troy we all appreciate your hard work.
Thanks go to Lawrence Wood that provided Troy with some of the man power that was
needed.
October 9th and 10th the Georgia Gourd Society will be featured artist at Georgia National
Fair. Reggie, Dennis, and Karin will be representing us. If you are in town please do visit
our display area and stop by to say hello. The Georgia National Fair in Perry, Ga. is al-
ways exciting especially the Fine Arts area and we are so proud that they accept gourds in
their competition events. We have had several winners in the past and I hope we do this
year.
I would like to welcome the new board members Kathy Bird and Gail Justice and to all
the members that agreed to continue in their positions I am truly grateful because without
a great board we can’t be successful. Tina and Steve will be moving to Texas and they will
be missed. Thank you Tina for being such a great Treasurer and working with me the
last 6 years and honestly I am so proud of the way you handled all the responsibilities of
being Treasurer.
Our next scheduled event is in March at the Hot’Lanta Patch meeting with Reggie leading
a team to teach an AGS Judge Certification Class. Watch for more information in the
next Bloomin’ Gourd and Website.
Thanks to all and I would love to see some of your Christmas gourd ideas so please send
pictures to [email protected]

Thanks also to the Flint River Patch for showing the
public what gourd art can be!
Hot’Lanta Patch News
Hurray! Hot L’anta Gourders have a new location. You
can now find us at 4650 Peachtree Industrial Blvd. in
Norcross. It is a beautiful building with a full wall of
windows overlooking a flower garden and great lighting
and even greater acoustics! We still meet at 10:00 AM
on the 2nd Saturday of every month and we welcome
all.
Dennis McDonald was our first guest teacher in this
month of June at our new site. He brought samples of
his stunning work and showed us many of his tech-
niques and secret tips to good gourd burning. His work
is beautiful and very detailed and I believe the secret is
a low burn setting and slowly pulling the lines. Surpris-
ingly he owns many pens but favors a few and seems to
rely on those 2 or 3 and he is mostly self taught!
Thanks Dennis for so many tips! Your work is beauti-
ful. We had 6 members attend the Cherokee Gourd
fest and all brought their finished products for show
and tell. As a group we completed many beautiful pro-
jects in Cherokee and are anxious to share with our
patch what we learned.
Tina Handrop and Helen Child were our teachers in
July for the Corded Rim Technique. All came with
prepped and drilled gourds and in just a few hours we
had transformed them to works of Art ready to take
home.

Hot’Lanta Patch News Continued
It’s always exciting to see the different finishes whether
it be stained, ink dyed, painted or just left a-la-natural
then embellished with a matching or contrasting cord.
The possibilities are endless which makes every project
so much fun. It was a great class with good teachers and
a take home tutorial.
For August the HotL’anta Gourd patch worked on our
shard jewelry which we will sell in our booth in Griffin
with all jewelry proceeds to be donated to GGS. For
upcoming HotL’anta happenings, please follow us on

As usual, Troy
did a wonder-
ful job instruct-
ing us for the
project.
Thanks so
much to Troy for coming to teach us.
Our August class
was an interesting
challenge. Tina
Handrop had
planned to in-
struct us with the
Corded Weave
Rim, but her son
(in the military)
surprised her with a visit. so Tina met with me and
gave me materials, instructions, and a demo so we
could continue with the project. It was interesting to
see how everyone’s project turned out with the
“blind” (me) leading the (not so blind) group.
FUN, FUN, FUN – That’s what we
had at our September meeting. Bar-
bara Hoelzel provided us with apple
gourds & a pear gourd and we made a
“birdy” paste and covered our gourds
with birdseed.

Christmas in July was
the theme for our
class on Saturday
25th, We had 2 teach-
ers, Tina Norford and
Lewis Turner.
In August, Reggie Eakin taught
a wood-burning and colored
pencil class. Reggie brought
several different brands of pen-
cils to try out on his Rose pat-
tern.
Since our 4th Saturday meet-
ing date coincides with the
Georgia Gourd Show, we will
not meet in Springfield.

Editor’s Comments—Reggie Eakin
The display of gourd art during our festival was some of the best
quality that I’ve ever seen. I’ve tried to give you glimpses of the
festival in this issue of The Bloomin’ Gourd. You can follow this
link to my photographs.

To see all of the ribbons winners you need to buy the CD from
Ellen. [email protected]
I’ve already volunteered to be the Competition Chair again in 2016
because I love to see the gourd art up close. I really want your
ideas and comments about the competition while the experience is
fresh in your minds. E-mail me at [email protected]
Several of you didn’t enter anything this year and I missed seeing
your art. It inspires me. There is a gourd out there somewhere
calling you to make it more beautiful.
Please plan for 2016—same place and same week-end. Tina
Handrop and I are making plans for a Judging Certification class in
March 2016 to be held at Pinckneyville Park Community Recrea-
tion Center where the Hotlanta Patch meets. We’ll be posting
more information as we firm up the exact Saturday date.
The next issue of the Bloomin’ Gourd will be Jaunary 2016.
Please send me pictures of your 2016 Plans, Christmas Parties,
and Christmas Gourds by December 15.
Minutes for the General Meeting
Held Saturday, September 26
The general membership GGS meeting was called to order, by
President Ellen Tatum, in Griffin, Ga. There was a large group of
GGS members present.
1st order of business was a review of the GGS budget. Troy Tatum
moved to accept the budget as read and Dennis McDonald se-
conded. The budget was accepted unanimously.
Next, the Treasurer's report for Jan. through Sept. 2015 was read
by Reggie Eakin ( in Tina Norford's absence ). Beginning balance
January 1, 2016 was $11,692.96. The ending balance before show
expenses and some show receipts was $13,276.40. Acceptance was
moved, seconded, and unanimously accepted.
A list of standing and nominated officers and directors was read
and, having been motioned on by Tina Handrop and seconded by
Anne Touchton, all nominations for the 2016-2017 term were
unanimously accepted. Ellen Tatum, President; Kathy Bird,
Treasuser; Karin Anderson, Secretary ;Ann Touchton, Director
Tina Handrop, Director, and Gail Justus, Director.
The steep increase in rental costs for the Kiawantis building for the
GGS 2016 Gourdfest was discussed which led to a motion from
Reggie Eakin to continue the Kiwanis Club, Griffin Ga. venue on
the weekend of Sept. 25th and 26th, 2016. That was followed by a
second from Karin Anderson, and passed unanimously.
No additional business was suggested when Ellen asked. Reggie
moved that the meeting be adjourned and Troy Tatum seconded.
Hoping everyone enjoyed the Gourdfest as much as I did, and
looking forward to another GREAT year,
Karin Anderson, Secretary, GGS
