Our HistoryThe Tulane University School of Medicine
began as the Medical College of Louisiana in
September, 1834, established by three young
physicians - Stone, Hunt, and Harrison- who had
met in the midst of the cholera epidemic of 1832.
Its founding was met with considerable opposition
from the local, Paris-trained Creole physicians,
whose European ideas concerning medical
education stressed academics well grounded in the
study of Latin and Greek. Nevertheless, it became
the first medical school in the Deep South and the
fifteenth in the country.
Medical school in those early days was muchdifferent than it is today. Only eight months of
lectures were required to receive an M.D. The
school yearwas four months, and the same seven
courses were repeated in the second year. The
curriculum consisted of courses in Anatomy and
Physiology, Chemistry,MMeriaMedica, Principles
and Practice of Medicine, Surgeiy and Obstetrics,
and the Diseases ofWomen and Children.
Instruction was wholly didactic, with lectures
given to the entire student body assembled in a
lecture hall. In fact, the unmotivated student could
graduate without ever having attended a deliveiy
,
observed an operation or examined a patient, as
these were to be learned as an apprentice.
Many other differences exist between medical
school then and now. For example, there were
only eleven students in the first class; tuition,
room, and board came to less than $400 per year.
But even though the school had grown to over one-
hundred students by 1843, professors still received
no salary and were compensated instead by selling
tickets for their lectures to the eager medical
students.
The Civil War brought to a halt all formal
medical training in 1862. During this time period
the Medical College was fortunate to find
financial security in the form of Paul Tulane, a
wealthy New Orleans merchant who bequeated
$1,250,000 to provide for a new University. In
1884, the various departments of the Medical
College were united under the jurisdiction of a
new institution, Tulane University.

Welcome to
( II.\RIT\- HOSPITALThe Medical Ccnter
oi' LouisianaA Level One Trauma Center
Certified ByThe American College of Surgeons
MEDICAL CENTER!
PINEVILLE
Since its founding l67 years ago,
theTulane University Sciiool of Medicine lias
undergone many changes. The Tulane Medical
Center was organized in 1969 to broaden
Tulane's committment to medical education,
research, and patient care. The Tulane Medical
Center Hospital and Clinic was dedicated in
1976 and was the first such university hospital
established in Louisiana. This 300 bed hospital,
part of which was recently sold to Columbia
HCA, enabled Tulane to consolidate a wide
range of services in a tertiary care setting. Theaddition of the Tulane Cancer Center is
another recent change, helping the hospital
remain a major referral center for the region.
Charity Hospital remains a major site
of clinical teaching for Tulane's students,
residents and fellows. In addition, students
continue to train at the University Hospital,
the Veterans Administration Hospital, the
Ochsner Hospital and Clinic, and the Huey P.
Long Hospital in Pineville, Louisiana.
From its meager beginnings in 1834,
the Tulane University School of Medicine has
conferred over 12,000 medical degrees. Andwhile Tulane originally catered to students
from the South, today it attracts students from
all over the country. This year, the Class
of 200 1 will join these proud ranks and
participate in residency training programs
throughout the fifty states.

Our Class SponsorsTraditionally, the members of the graduating class select sponsors from the faculty to guide them through and help them celebrate
their fourth year. We are honored to have had the support and encouragement of Drs. LeDoux, Pisano and Rodenhauser, and we thank
them for their help.
Elma I. LeDoux, M.D.
Dr. Elma LeDoux is an Associate Professor of Medicine here at the Tulane University
School of Medicine, and we know her well as both the Director of Student Programs in thel
Department of Medicine and as the Master of the EKG. Born in Mobile, Alabama, Dr.
LeDoux moved to New Orleans at a young age, went to high school here in town, and then
completed her undergraduate work at the University ofNew Orleans before beginning
medical school at Tulane. Dr. LeDoux remained at Tulane for her residency and
cardiovascular disease fellowship, and she has been committed to teaching Tulane students
ever since. She has received an unprecedented number of Owl Club Outstanding Clinical
Teacher Awards (fourteen!) and in 1999, she received the Owl Club's W. Clifford NewmanAward for student advocacy and committment to excellence in medical education.
Joseph C. Pisano, Ph.D.
Dr. Joseph Pisano has been a part ofthe class of 2001 before we even knew we were a class.]
In his current role as the Associate Dean and Director of Admissions and Recruitment here!
at the medical school, he not only interviewed many of us, he also acted as Tulane's good-
will ambassador, welcoming us all during the annual orientation festivities. Dean Pisano
attended King's College in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania before completing his doctorate
work at the University of Notre Dame. He originally joined the Tulane faculty in 1968 as a
professor in the Physiology Department. He quickly expanded his duties, however, first as
the Director of Financial Aid and now as the Director of Admissions. We are lucky to have
had his guidance and help for the duration of our medical school careers, and we know his
positive influence on the school will continue for years to come.
Paul Rodenhauser, M.D.
Dr. Paul Rodenhauser is currently the Assistant Dean for Academic and Counseling HServices and the Director of Medical Student Education in Psychiatry here at the Tulane
University School of Medicine. He received his undergraduate education at Gettysburg
College in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, went to medical school at Jefferson Medical College
in Philadelphia, and completed his residency training at the Sheppard & Enoch Pratt
Hospital in Towson, Maryland. Sei"ving as chief resident there inspired his interest in
education and administration, and since joining the Tulane faculty in 1991, Dr.
Rodenhauser's enthusiasm has been honored with the Gloria P. Walsh Award for Teaching
Excellence, numerous Owl Club Outstanding Teaching Awards, and the first ever Tulane '
University School of Medicine Chancellor's Teaching Scholar Award. Whether he washelping us choose our future specialties, keeping our right brains from atrophying, or
scaring us with his videotapes ofthe journey from happy pre-medical student to beat-down
physician, his support has helped us through this exciting and important stage of our own '
medical journey.

You Know You're At HomeIn New Orieans When...
1
.
You no longer worry about being below sea level.
2. You not only can say Tchoupitoulas, but you can say it without laughing.
3. You consider reinforcing the attic floor so you can store more beads up there.
4. You begin to believe that purple, green, and gold look good together.
5. You think of streetcars and ferries as transportation, not entertainment.
6. You know who won the most recent LSU-Tulane game.7. You go to Pat O'Brien's and don't order a hurricane.
8. You are embarrassed to be seen with someone ordering a hurricane.
9. You know exactly what you are going to eat next Monday and every Monday after that.
10. You are no longer shocked when someone advises you to "suck the heads and eat the tails".
1 1
.
You don't think twice about being called baby or honey by perfect strangers.
12. You're not afraid when someone wants to "axe" you.
13. You are no longer alarmed to find baby dolls in your cake.
14. You learn to swallow the baby dolls without letting anyone know.
15. You consider it any honor, on certain occasions, to have cabbages or coconuts thrown at you.
16. You look both ways before going through a green light.
17. You "make groceries", not buy them.
18. You don't think twice about walking outside with a beer in your hand.
19. You think a ten foot ceiling is rather low.
20. You can walk far enough down Bourbon Street to reach a favorite restaurant and have absolutely nocuriosity about what might be going on one block further down.
21
.
You drink Dixie instead of singing it.
22. You can navigate without ever making a left turn.
23. You no longer giggle at the idea of a grown man being named "Dutch" or "Moon" or "Bubba".
24. You no longer expect the long hot summer to be only three months long, or four months, or five
months, or six.
25. You get on a bus marked "Cemeteries" without a second thought.
26. You have discovered that those four-inch-long cockroaches can fly, but have decided to retain your
sanity anyway.
27. You've finally mastered the technique of hitting a cockroach with a shoe just hard enough to kill the
cockroach but not ruin your carpet.
28. You do not think about spinach when you see the word "Popeye's".
29. Your favorite football team wins four games in one year and you are exhilarated by the great season.30. You pronounce Milan with the accent on the first syllable.
31
.
You know the coffee is going to have chicory in it, but you order it anyway.32. You stop referring to places in relation to compass points and start referring to them in relation to water33. You know that the best dougnuts are square and have no holes.
34. You think "lagniappe" is the prettiest word in any language.35. You know that living anywhere else in the world would be very sad.

A Litde Music and MedicineI Will Survive - The Crazy Med Student Version
At first I was afraid, I was petrified
I kept thinking I could never make it through first year alive
But then I spent so many times trying to study all night long
I grew strong, I learned how to get along
And then the test, from Doctor Sparks
I just walked in to find my answers covered with big red marks
I should have studied so much more
I would have made my way to class
If I'd of known for just one second I would only get low pass
Oh now go, walk out the door,
Just turn around now, you're not welcome anymore
Weren't you the one who marked my test with that red pen?
Did you think I'd crumble?
Did you think I'd lay down and die?
Oh now I, I will survive
As long as I know how to learn I know I'll be alive
I've got all my life to give, I've got all my time to give
I will survive, I will survive
Yeah-a-Yeah
It took all the strength I had just not to fall apart
I'm trying hard to mend the pieces of my broken heart
And I spent oh so many nights just feeling sorry for myself
I used to cry, but now I hold my head up high
And you see me, learning something newI'm not that stupid little person barely passed by you
And so you thought you'd just drop by
And give a lecture on the kneeBut now l"m boycotting your classes, I'll just ask Doctor Kirby
Oh now go, walk out the door
Just turn around now, you're not welcome anymoreWeren't you the one who asked if I knew Meckle's space?Did you think I'd crumble?
Did you think I'd lay down and die?
Oh now I, I will survive
Yeah as long as I know how to iearn 1 know I'll be alive
I've got all my life to give, I've got all my time to give
I will survive, I will survive
Hey-a-Yeah
Tulane Medical - To Tune of Margaritaville
Searchin the body, for erector spinae
All of my lab coat is covered in flab
My Netter's messy, fell on the body
Smell of cadavers stifles the lab
Wastin away again in Tulane Medical
Searching for my lost pair of scrubs
Some people claim that Dr. Kirby's to blame
But I know, it's nobody's fault
Infraspinatus, semipspinalis
Cauda equina, lig-menta flava
These are a few of, answers I should of
Had for the lab test but some how did not
Wastin away again in Tulane Medical
Searchin for my lost hours of sleep
Some people claim that Dr. Kirby's to blame
Now I think, hell it could be my fault
The post-test party, got started early
As for my memories I only have two
Something 'bout hurricanes
And trench kissing window panes
How they relate I haven't a clue
Wastin away again in Tulane Medical
Searchin for my lost memories
Some people claim that Dr. Kirby's to blame
But I know, it's my own damn fault.
