RECONCILIATION
We celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation every Saturday from 4:00pm to 4:45pm in the Church. Individual confessions may be arranged by calling the Parish Office.
BAPTISM
Baptisms are normally celebrated on Sundays twice a month at 2:00pm. Please call the Parish Office PRIOR to the birth of your child to arrange for a meeting with a member of our pastoral team and to register for the baptismal preparation meeting (held in the Church on the first Friday of each month at 7:30pm). Please note that baptisms are scheduled a minimum of two months after meeting with the Baptism Ministry.
COMMUNION FOR THE HOMEBOUND
Anyone who cannot attend Mass due to illness may receive Communion at home. Please call the Parish Office to make arrangements.
MARRIAGE
Couples should make an appointment with a priest or deacon at least eighteen months in advance and prior to making reception plans.
ANOINTING OF THE SICK
The Sacrament is administered the first Saturday of the month within the celebration of the 8:30am Mass. We invite those impaired by sickness or old age, those preparing for surgery and those living with an illness to participate communally in the Sacrament to seek the strength, peace, forgiveness, restoration, and assistance to continue their faith journey on earth.
ADULT INITIATION—RCIA
The RCIA is the process by which adults are brought into the Catholic Church. If you have never been baptized, confirmed, received first holy communion, or are a member of another Christian Church and wish to become a member of the Catholic Church, please contact John Linge through the Parish Office.
PARISH CHURCH HOURS
Our church is open every day for private prayer. Some folks pray quietly before the tabernacle in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel, while others pray the Stations of the Cross or light a candle at one of the shrines. Still others sit in the pews and meditate on scriptures or pray in some other fashion. Feel free to stop in at any time when the church is open:
Monday through Saturday - 8:00am to 8:00pm
Sunday - 7:15am to 8:00pm

SUNDAY SCRIPTURE REFLECTION WE REMEMBER Genesis 2:7-9, 3:1-7; Psalms 51:3-4, 5-6, 12-13, 14, 17; Romans 5: 12-19, Matthew 4:1-11 Today is the first Sunday of Lent. As we begin this penitential season, we hear the stories of two temptations by Satan: the temptation of the first parents and the temptation of the Lord. The first reading tells the second story of creation, in which God creates the first man, Adam, out of the earth and gives him the breath of life. God gave him a beautiful garden to live in, and only asked him to refrain from eating from one tree. However, because of a desire to become like God, Adam ate of that tree. By betraying God through that first sin, he lost the easy ability to avoid other, more serious sins and experienced separation from God. We have inherited that separation that can only be healed through our faith in Jesus Christ. By this story, the Biblical writers tried to account for the inclination to sin that we all feel. To paraphrase St. Paul, we do the evil we do not want to do and we fail to do the good we want to do. This is the effect of the Original Sin that we have all experienced.
In the Gospel, St. Matthew tells the story of the temptation of the new Adam, Jesus Christ. Like the first Adam, Satan came to tempt Jesus to betray the Father’s will. Adam succumbed to temptation in an almost offhand manner, while he was well-fed and comfortable. Satan came to Jesus when He was weakened by fasting for forty days and forty nights. Satan attacked Jesus the same way he attacked Adam—by appealing to His human pride. As a human being, Jesus could be tempted to sin. However, as the Son of God, he was protected from the effects of Original Sin. He was able to see the right path clearly and to choose the will of the Father over His own earthly glory.
In the second reading, St. Paul explains the meaning of the other two readings. He explains how the sin of Adam brought death into the world, but the suffering and death of the Son of God brought new life into the world. Adam’s sin separated us from God, causing the people of Israel to see Him as a powerful king, while Jesus’ gift of His life overpowered the effects of sin and brought us back to relationship with God so that we could see Him as who He really is; a loving father.
Personal Reflection
How do the effects of Adam’s sin reveal themselves in my life?
What will I do this Lent to build my relationship with Jesus?
Family Reflection
Have you decided how, as a family, you will observe Lent? Evaluate how you are doing. Make any changes that may be necessary.

KEEPING LENT
MORNING PRAYER (LITURGY OF THE HOURS) Join us as we pray the psalms, the daily prayer of the Church, Tuesdays and Thursdays during Lent, from Tuesday, March 3 to Tuesday, April 7 at 8:40am in the Church. DAILY REFLECTION BOOKS Daily meditation books are available at the doors of the church. Consider spending time each day reading the scriptures and spending quiet time with the Lord. STATIONS OF THE CROSS One of the traditional devotions of the Lenten season is the Stations of the Cross during which we unite with Christ’s passion and death. During the week, booklets will be made available in the Church near the first station for those who wish to pray the stations on their own. We hope that when you pray the stations of the cross, you will remember those who are suffering throughout the world. In addition, on Fridays following the 9:00am Mass, we will communally pray the Stations of the Cross. Our Respect Life Committee has arranged to pray the Stations of the Cross for Life on Wednesday, March 18 at 7:30pm in the Church. REMEMBERING THOSE PREPARING FOR INITIATION During the season of Lent, we invite you to pray in a special way for our elect Pamela Testa, who will celebrate the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist at the Easter Vigil. We remember all those throughout the world who are preparing for initiation this Easter.
LENTEN SACRIFICES AND ACTS OF CHARITY Consider living simply, enjoying the good things of our lives in moderation and forgoing some good things in a spirit of penance. Use your free time to enrich your spiritual life. Do something positive to help someone in need, perhaps for a friend, a neighbor or a loved one. Maybe you can abstain from one thing you spend money on and support Operation Haiti instead. ABSTAINING FROM MEAT On Good Friday and all Fridays during Lent, all Catholics who have reached their 14th year are obligated to abstain from eating meat. FASTING On Good Friday, all Catholics between the ages of 18 and 59 are obligated to fast, which means limiting yourself to one full meal. GOOD FRIDAY PRAYER SERVICE FOR CHILDREN Join us on April 10 at 12 noon in the church. This prayer service provides an opportunity for children to experience the passion story at their age level through the use of storytelling, display materials and hands-on experiences. GOOD FRIDAY TAIZÉ PRAYER Join us on April 10 at 7pm in the Church for a candlelight prayer service to help us reflect on the mystery of The Cross and The Glory of the Resurrection. Consider setting aside 45 minutes to join in this beautiful form of prayer.

PARISH LENTEN OPPORTUNITY – OPERATION HAITI “The greed of possession leads to violence, exploitation and death; for this, the Church, especially during the Lenten periods, reminds us to practice almsgiving – which is the capacity to share.” Pope Benedict XVI Since 2003, our parish has very generously supported an impoverished village and parish in Haiti. Throughout Lent, we encourage you and your families to take time and discern if an offering of your hard-earned finances can be shared with the children and families through Operation Haiti. Because of your generosity and faithfulness we have lived out our mission to serve the least of our brothers and sisters. We have filled the hungry with good things. The children’s hearts and stomachs are full daily because of
you! The community has fresh water to drink because of you! Education is now a rich foundation in the two new schools that were built from your love and sacrifices. We couldn’t be prouder of all your efforts and support of this mission. Operation Haiti collection envelopes will be at the doors of the church next weekend and throughout Lent, and will be collected during Holy Week services. Please take time to pray and contribute what your means permit. No sacrifice will go unnoticed, and we will be most grateful for any offering. If your means at this time do not permit a financial offering, please consider a spiritual offering of prayer. One intentional prayer equally changes the life of a child and family. Thank you.

About the Cover
Adam and Eve’s Exile from Paradise, by Paul Gustave Dore (1877)
Gustave Dore was a renowned painter and book
illustrator who flourished during the second half of the 19th
century (from around 1850 until his death in 1883). He was
noted for his illustrations of the Divine Comedy, the Bible and
other classics.
Dore’s illustrations were characterized by fine detail,
technical mastery, and realistic depictions of the human form
as well as fantastical creatures such as dragons, angels and
demons.
His black and white drawings exhibit a minimalist style
using relatively few lines and shades, yet the result is a powerful
image that evokes vivid movement and profound emotions.
Dore’s illustrations of the most dramatic incidents of the Bible,
such as the expulsion from Paradise, are especially moving.
