PRIOR TO TESTING

This document contains the TA Script of Student Directions for the Smarter Balanced ELA paper-pencil summative assessment administration. It is required that Test Administrators (TAs) review the test specific script and directions prior to administering a state assessment. Contents of this document include best practices for testing (before, during, and after) and the student directions (SAY) boxes. It is highly recommended to allow students an opportunity to practice on the training and/or practice tests prior to taking the summative assessment.

Before Testing (day prior or morning of)☐ For all before testing activities, refer to the

Checklist for TAs in Appendix A of the TAM.☐ It is recommended to print the TA Script of Stu-

dent Directions (SAY) boxes prior to testing.☐ TAs should try to maintain a natural classroom

atmosphere during the test administration. Be-fore each test begins, he or she should encour-age students to do their best.

During Testing☐ For all during testing activities, refer to the

Checklist for TAs in Appendix A of the TAM.☐ Follow professional practices and test security

protocols as outlined in the PIRG.☐ At least one trained TA is required to supervise

students at all times during the test sessionand until materials have been collected and ac-counted for. Students left unattended will havetheir test results invalidated.

☐ Provide all accessibility features according toeach student’s plan. If the correct features areunavailable, do not continue testing and notifyyour SC immediately.

☐ TAs must ensure that students do not haveaccess to non-approved digital, electronic, ormanual devices during testing.

☐ Break schedules should be followed accordingto the TAM. Additional breaks may be providedbased on student needs and TA judgement.

• Students who have not completed theassessment must be monitored duringbreaks and lunches.

☐ Should a testing incident occur during your ses-sion, you should stop testing immediately andnotify your SC.

☐ Share your plan for students who finish early.How are materials processed and accountedfor? Do students leave the testing room, and ifso, where do they go? If students remain in thetesting room, what quiet activity is available?Electronics are not permitted.

☐ Each test specific script must be used andfollowed exactly when a test is administered.When reading directions to students:• Do not paraphrase the directions.• Read the directions to students exactly as

they are written, using a natural tone andmanner. If you make a mistake in reading adirection, stop and say, “Listen again”. Thenread the direction again. Never deviatefrom the directions as written. Deviatingfrom the printed directions is a testingviolation. Read all material printed in boxesnext to the word SAY:. The italicized textoutside of the SAY: boxes is information foryou and should not be read to students.

• You may repeat any part of these directionsas many times as needed.

☐ Do not provide suggestions to students onhow to respond to the task or evaluate studentwork.

SUMMATIVE: TA INSTRUCTIONS IntroductionThis document is required to administer Session 2 and Session 3 of the Smarter Balanced grade 5 ELA paper-pencil summative assessment. TAs must refer to this script for student directions for Sessions 2 and 3.

For Session 1: TAs must refer to the secure ELA Listening Transcript, for grade 5, session 1. TAs should become familiar with TA scripts in advance of the test administration.

Ensuring Test SecurityThe security of the summative assessment instruments and the confidentiality of student information are vital to maintaining the validity, reliability, and fairness of the results.

All summative test items and test materials are secure and must be appropriately handled. Secure handling protects the integrity, validity, and confidentiality of summative assessment items, prompts, and student information. Any deviation in test administration must be reported as a test incident to ensure the validity of the summative assessment results.

For additional information regarding the ELA paper-pencil test administration, see the TAM.

Monitoring Test ProgressOnce students have started their tests, TAs should circulate through the room to ensure all conditions of test security are maintained. If a TA witnesses or suspects a possible test security incident, the TA should stop the students test session and the SC should be contacted immediately in accordance with the school’s Test Security and Building Plan (TSBP).

Supplemental Student Directions During TestingIf a student asks for assistance with their paper-pencil test form, TAs are permitted to: • Re-read student directions in English or the

student’s native language.• Acknowledge that the student’s response is

clearly recorded in the test booklet.

• Turn pages to help the student get to the cor-rect page.

Off Task: If you notice that a student is off task, you may read the statement below verbatim.

SAY: It is important that you do your best.

Do you need to close your test booklet and answer booklet and take a break?

Item Concern: If a student is concerned about an item, you may support the student by reading the script below verbatim.

SAY: I cannot help you check your work.

You may read the question again and think about what the question is asking you to do.

Try your best and choose the answer that makes the most sense to you.

TAs Now☐ Verify that all test and answer booklets have

been identified to each student (pre-ID label). Students will be instructed to write their names on their test booklets.

☐ Grade 5 Sessions 2 & 3: For Sessions 2 and 3, TAs will read from this non-secure TA Script of Student Directions.Grade 5 Session 1: TAs are required to read from the secure ELA Listening Transcript deliv-ered with the paper test booklet for Session 1. If you did not receive the secure script, do not continue testing and immediately notify your SC.

☐ Verify quantities of materials to ensure that each student has:Sessions 1, 2, 3: His or her own test booklet, answer booklet, scratch paper, state approved glossary, and two sharpened No. 2 pencils with erasers.Session 3, Part 2: Students may have access to an English dictionary and thesaurus, and notes from PT 1.

☐ Ensure students know how or where to get other materials, as permitted by the test con-tent or student plan (aligning to the GTSA).

Final Processing Steps for TAs1. If students are allowed to leave the room

when they finish testing, explain the proce-dures for leaving without disrupting othersand where they are expected to report oncethey leave. Prior to releasing students whohave completed their test, you must collectand account for all testing materials providedto students during this test session. If studentsare expected to remain in the testing roomuntil the end of the session, instruct themon what activities they may engage in whenfinished testing. Electronic devices are notpermitted.

2. For security reasons, only trained TAs mayhandle secure test materials.

3. Collect and account for all test booklets,answer booklets, individual ancillary materi-als, as distributed and permitted for each testsession (e.g., scratch paper, and glossaries).Scratch paper with notes from Session 3, PT 1,must be available for students during the ad-ministration of Session 3, PT 2. If Session 3, PT2 is being administered on another day, stu-dent notes must follow the chain of custody oftest booklets and be immediately returned toyour SC, per your TSBP.

4. Per your district approved testing plan, stu-dents who need more time may remain in thesame testing room or move to another loca-tion to finish the assessment.• For students remaining in the same room,

redistribute test materials and instructstudents to continue with the assessment.

• For students moving to a new location, goto the new location and then redistributetest materials and instruct students tocontinue with the assessment. Studentsare not permitted to transfer securematerials.

5. When testing has completed, promptly returnall testing materials (e.g., secure ELA Listen-ing Transcript, accommodated forms, test andanswer booklets, scratch paper, andglossaries) to your SC according to yourschool’s TSBP.

SUMMATIVE: STUDENT DIRECTIONS―ELA GRADE 5, SESSION 1It is recommended that TAs administer Session 1 of the grade 5 ELA assessments to students prior to administering Session 2 and Session 3.

Session 1: TA student instructions are located in the separate and secure ELA Listening Transcript for Grade 5 Session 1. TAs are required to use the secure script when administering ELA Session 1. If you do not have a copy of the secure ELA Listening Transcript that accompanied your test booklets, do not continue testing and notify your SC immediately.

Secure test materials may not be reviewed, retained, or copied and must be immediately returned to your SC at the end of each testing session. This includes the secure ELA Listening Transcript, student test and answer booklets, and any ancillary materials provided to students during the testing sessions (i.e., scratch paper).

Ending Students Test Session When there are approximately ten minutes left in the test session, the TA should give students a brief warning.
