    Builders: Augustinians

    1stChurch:Father Diego de Espinar (1575)-makeshift church dedicatedto St. Martin of Tours, Bishop-but destroyed by the eruption

    of Taal Volcano 1754

    2nd: built in 1756 by Fr. Martin Aguirre (made

    of reef stone) andcontinued by other priests

    Taal volcano erupted againwhich caused damages tothe church and theconvent (1852)

    Dubbed as the largestchurch in Asia(standing 88.6 m long and45 m wide)

    It was built in 1856 by Fr.Marcos Anton

    Arch. Luciano Olivercommissioned to design and manage

    completed the church in 1878 aadding the main altar of Doric style aResponsible for the baptistery made

    with tiles from Europe

    It was declared a NationalShrine on January 16, 1974.

    A massive restoration (2011)by Msgr. AlfredoMadlangbayan

    (sections the church interiorwas restored to its originaltrompe l'oeil ceilings, the towerwas restored with a new set of

    carillon bells)

    The restoration wascompleted in Novemberof 2011.

    A small tower on the leftside of the facadecontained the large churchbell

    (destroyed by an earthquake in 1942.It was reconstructed later, but its

    appearance did not match thechurch)

    The church was thenrestored in 1953 inpreparation for theCanonical Coronation ofthe Our Lady of Cays say

    The domes of the churchas restored in 1990 underthe supervision of theNational HistoricalInstitute.

    Features:

    The faade resembles St.Peters Basilica in Rome,with its Ionic columns.

    The faade is also with thepalladian motif in the LateRenaissance in character

    Ionic columns on the firstlevel and acanthus columnsto the 1nd level.
