This is basically an extended Dorian workout... C Dorian (C D Eb F G A Bb) for the first 16 bars, followed by 8 bars of Eb Dorian (Eb F Gb Ab Bb C Db) and then a return to C Dorian. In his solo, Tom does much more than just Dorian lines, though. Watch how he leads into Cm7 (and Ebm7) chord tones with chromatic approach notes or connects them with chromatic passing notes. He throws in surprising outside notes such as the major 7th (B) and minor 6th (Ab). And of course, there’s that legendary Tom Quayle sound, seamlessly blending legato and hybrid picking.
