Seneca grad takes partin trip to Mexico. PAGE 5
By MIKE MONOSTRAThe Sun
Last winter, pole vault was acompletely foreign concept toSeneca High School junior Brit-tney Raffo. She had never compet-ed in pole vault before, instead fo-cusing on gymnastics for most of her childhood.
This winter, Raffo isn’t justcompeting in pole vault, she’s
jumping her way up the state per-formance lists and into the recordbooks.
It’s been a whirlwind year onthe runway for Raffo, as she wentfrom learning the sport of polevault last spring to setting a newrecord at the South Jersey GroupIII sectional meet in Februaryand qualifying for the NJSIAAMeet of Champions.
Raffo’s journey into pole vaultwas an easy one thanks to theskills she learned as a gymnast.
Raffo competed for many years atWill-Moor Gymnastics in Mt.Laurel.
“I've done gymnastics mywhole life,” Raffo said. “(Polevault) was just something I wasinterested in.”
There is a lot of crossover be-tween the skills Raffo used ingymnastics and the skills sheuses in pole vault. Raffo’s favoriteapparatus in gymnastics was the
vault, an event featuring a sprintdown a runway similar to howathletes sprint down a runway inpole vault.
Raffo also liked how athletes in
pole vault go upside down, some-thing she enjoyed doing in gym-nastics.
“My favorite part about polevault would be going upside
down,” she said. “There’s notmany other sports where you cango upside down.”
As last spring wore on andRaffo got more interested in
track, she began practicing polevault skills at the gym more thanher gymnastics skills.
“I think everything transi-tioned to pole vault. It's helped mea lot,” Raffo said. “I would go tothe gym and I would only do stuff that would help with the polevault.”
Raffo’s first season last springhad its ups and downs.
“There was a meet where I hadno height, I didn't clear seven(feet),” she said. “But by the sea-son’s end, I was starting to get bet-ter numbers.”
Raffo managed to qualify forthe NJSIAA Group III finals andhit a nine-foot vault at the groupchampionships. The jump wastied for the best vault for the girls’team for the season.
Entering the 2015-16 indoor sea-son, Raffo was poised to breakout. She set a new personal bestand broke the Seneca schoolrecord at the NJSIAA Group III
Relay Championships on Jan. 17with a 11-foot vault. Raffo reached11 feet again at the Morris CountyCoaches Invitational in Staten Is-land, N.Y., on Jan. 27.
The biggest improvement Raffohas made this season has beenwith steps down the runway andbuilding momentum into thevault.

Brittney Raffo heads to the side-lines after completing a polevault attempt. Raffo had abreakout season for the GoldenEagles, breaking the school andSouth Jersey Group IV records
in pole vault and finishing fourthat the NJSIAA Meet of Champi-ons. At right, Raffo soars overthe bar during a pole vault at-tempt.

As a psychology major fromStockton University, Morgan Bar-nett saw no better opportunitythan to help at a school in a heavi-ly impoverished area of Mexico.
“These kids all needed somesort of psychological treatmentwith everything they had already
been through at such a youngage,” Barnett said.
The Seneca High School gradu-ate was surprised by how openthe children acted around her,
being she was a total stranger. She noticed one of the students
crying one day while the classwas trying to tell Barnett stories,so she quickly brought a transla-tor over to see what the problemwas. The young girl had recentlylost her mother right beforeChristmas and was crying be-cause Barnett reminded her somuch of her mom.
“I hugged her so closely, I neverwanted to put her down again,”Barnett said.
She was given the opportunityto connect with these children
and hear about their experiencesthrough a mission trip arrangedby her local church, MedfordUnited Methodist. Morgan wasone of six young adults who ac-companied Pastor Kathleen Stolzto Rio Bravo, Mexico, a town lo-cated in the state of Tamaulipas, about 15 minutes over the Texasborder.
Stolz joined Medford United
Methodist Church as associatepastor in 2013. Before coming toSouth Jersey, she enjoyed a long

arch 20. Eleven more days. It
can’t come soon enough. Of-
ficially, that’s the start of
spring. Whether Mother Nature
agrees, though, is anyone’s guess at
this point. Early forecasts show she
will be good to us, but how much can
we actually rely on forecasts?Spring is what we all need. We need
a nice stroll downtown, in the park or
on the boardwalk to reinvigorate us, to
get us out of the doldrum into which
winter plunges us every year, no mat-
ter how mild or extreme is.
We got lucky this winter, with just
one major snowstorm that crippled us
for a week or so. It’s been bitter cold at
times, too, as any winter is, and we got
a sprinkling of wet weather last week.
But, hey, it’s in the 70s this week!
No matter how bad it is, winter af-
fects all of our moods, and it affects
our bottom lines, too.
We’ll most likely be paying more in
taxes, in some way, at some level, for
pothole repairs and salt purchases.
Snow and cold weather affects local
businesses as well, especially retail
shops. Bad weather keeps patrons in-
side. The arrival of spring weather on
a consistent basis will hopefully turn
that around, and quickly.
Cold weather keeps people in the
mindset of “no end in sight,” and pre-
vents many from taking day trips to
our state’s wonderful good-weather
spots, or from planning future trips, aswell.
In a little more than 60 days, the offi-
cial start of the summer beach season
will be here. Does that even sound
right?
The good news is that it started to
warm up this week. Spring really does
look like it’s right around the corner.
Let’s hope Mother Nature cooperates
and doesn’t reverse the tide back to
winter. Please spare us!
in our opinion
Hello, spring, are you here yet?Our moods, our businesses, our livelihoods depend on your arrival
Your thoughts
What are you most looking forward to thisspring? While you are out and aboutenjoying what hopefully will be beautifulweather, send us the photos you takealong the way, and we’ll be happy to sharethem with the rest of the town.

How about some of the fantastic weatherwe have had recently? Winter seems to beon its last leg, and spring is right aroundthe corner. I can’t wait. How about you?
The Read Across America program re-cently began. It is sponsored by the Nation-al Education Association and is designedto foster a love of reading in children. Weare having a clue hunt that will requireyour young ones to use all their libraryskills to honor this program.
We are hoping to see many of our slight-ly older (ages 7 – 10) tween readers at our
discussion of “I Am Malala: How One GirlStood Up for Education and Changed theWorld.” This book is the true and inspiringstory of Malala Yousafzai in her ownwords. It is about the power of “one,” andthe difference each of us can make. You
can find us at the library on March 9 at 4p.m. for this.
There is also a great book discussion onMarch 29 at 6 p.m. for the adults. The novelis “Goodnight Nobody” by Jennifer Weiner. The story follows Kara Klein as she tries tosolve a murder mystery while jugglingthree children and her own problems.Books are available at the library and lightrefreshments will be provided. You willalso learn about the opportunity to meetthe author at a later date.
In keeping with our usual monthly offer-ings, on March 16 there will be an all-dayMake and Take opportunity. With the ap-proach of St. Patrick’s Day, do you think it
might be something green? The children’sreading raffle prize is an Easter-themedbasket, and for the adult raffle, there is anindulgence basket full of books and icecream fixings.
Have you seen the Read-O-Saurus-Rex
backpacks at the library? Your little oneswill love having a place to keep their books
safe and secure, and they are available in avariety of colors. Your donation for thebackpack goes directly to supporting yourlocal library.
Until next time, keep turning thosepages and don’t worry about staying warm.Plant a flower!

and varied career as a Christianambassador. But in all the placesshe has lived and people she hasserved, it is children and youthwho most touch her heart.
“It is young adults who can andwill make a difference in thisworld,” Stolz said. “The connec-tions they make so easily withothers allow us as leaders to ad-mire the ability as we work along-side them to forge new relation-
ships.”“We live in a time when people, especially young people, want toknow how the church can make adifference, and Kathleen is greatat translating the teachings of thegospel into tangible action. I'm sohappy to be in ministry alongwith her,” Senior Pastor Joe Mon-ahan said.
For years, the Medford UnitedMethodist Church had been put-ting together trips for older adultsand younger kids, but there was
not much opportunity for youngadults.
Barnett put her head togetherwith Stoltz to brainstorm some
ideas and was looking at possiblygoing to North Carolina or Haitibefore getting in contact with As-sociate Pastor Tom Lank of the
Haddonfield United MethodistChurch.
Lank had been making the tripto Rio Bravo with members of hischurch for years and was lookingto fill spots for this year’s trip.
“We hopped on board reallyquickly,” Barnett said. “Just theidea of going to a different coun-try was really appealing. I love totravel and appreciated the au-thentic experience of goingthrough the border that the mis-
sion trip offered.”The MUMC group was respon-sible for its transportation toLake Whitney Airport in Texas, and the Manos Juntas Volunteers
in Mission Group would take thereins from there.
Rio Bravo is home to ManosJuntas VIM Mexico, A.C., a min-
istry of the Methodist Church of Mexico.
Manos Juntas wanted to have ateam from America come workwith the residents of Rio Bravo toopen the eyes of the communityby witnessing a group that wasn’tfamily or friends but was stillwilling to help.
“We wanted to culturally em-power the local community in RioBravo,” Barnett said.
The students who went on the
trip were responsible for havingto contribute half the cost of thetrip themselves, and the rest was

Barnett said it was worth everypenny because of the unforget-table experiences she was able tohave with the children.
She was amazed at how muchthey did with so few resources. It’s common in America to havemultiple schools in one town forkindergarten through fourthgrade; in Rio Bravo they have
three classrooms for kinder-garten through seventh grade.“One day we thought it would
be a good idea to bring the stu-dents some beach balls and para-chutes to show them what we typ-ically do in gym class in Ameri-
ca,” Barnett said. The kids were ecstatic when
they were introduced to thesenew fun games.
“I’ve never seen someone sohappy in my life to play withsomething so cheap,” Barnett.“The kids were dying for our at-tention.”
Barnett noted the fun-filled dayended with many hugs and smileson everyone’s faces.
“This lends a dignity and im-
portance to the work when the lo-cals see us take pride and joy in itwith them,” Stolz said. “Hopeful-
ly, the pride we feel works to bringthem confidence, too.”
Though the group went in astotal strangers, it was clear by the
end of the trip it had made con-nections with these people andleft a lasting mark that had RioBravo wishing MUMC wouldcome back.
When asked if she would re-turn to the area, Stolz readilyreplied with a smile, “We’re al-ready planning the next trip!”

“Since last year, I understandthe technique more and how it'ssupposed to look,” she said. “I'mmore aggressive with it. I'm defi-nitely still learning.”
Raffo entered the NJSIAASouth Jersey Group III meet witha legitimate chance of breakingthe meet record of 10-feet, 7-inch-es set in 2012 by Moorestown’s
Alexandra Elder. Raffo eclipsedthe mark on her final attempt of
the meet with a 10-foot, 8-inch
vault.“I was really excited, because itwas on the last attempt,” Raffosaid.
Raffo had a 10-foot vault twoweeks later in the NJSIAA GroupIII Championships, qualifyingher for the Meet of Championsless than a year after she pickedup the sport.
Raffo’s early success has her
confident she could be one of the
state’s best athletes before shegraduates. Raffo gave up gymnas-tics in January and is now focus-ing even more on excelling in polevault. With the spring track andfield season and her senior yearstill to come, Raffo has lofty goalsshe still wants to achieve.
“By the end of next year, mygoal is to hopefully be at the top of the Meet of Champs,” she said.
