Cllr Ian Ward (Council leader) is positive about the potential
impacts of Brexit: "we're already out of the blocks and talking to
significant investors from around the world”.
Birmingham City Council plans to keep its 11-strong team in
charge of Brexit issues but offload the £726,000 annual cost. The
authority hopes external sources can, within two years, pay for its
Birmingham-based European & International Affairs team - plus
£120,000 for its office in Brussels.

North East England will suffer

of a 'no-deal' Brexit according
to the Government's own
analysis. It is the only region
of England with a surplus in

at the event which included the recognition for the need for local
industrial strategies, greater fiscal autonomy and a regional voice
on Brexit.

communication” with EU leaders in Brussels in order to attempt to
shape any transitional funding arrangements.

Yorkshire

There is a campaign for a
Yorkshire-wide devolution
deal to ensure the region’s
voice is heard in the Brexit
negotiations, a major business
event was told. The leaders of
three Yorkshire councils
shared a platform to argue that
a Yorkshire devolution
settlement would make the
region second only to London
in scale and influence among
the UK regions. The speakers
also said that devolution could
help to boost the region’s
economy by leading to extra
investment in skills and
transport (26th

Leeds
Leeds City Council leader Judith Blake has said the local authority
is working hard with local businesses “to get to a place where we
can respond well to the opportunities Brexit may create” (27th July,
2017). She said the councils has prioritised five areas to help
achieve this, including “maintaining progress on major
development and infrastructure schemes” and securing devolution.
York
Businesses from across the region are being encouraged to take
advantage of the support and funding to develop new products and
processes available through the Leeds City Region Enterprise
Partnership (LEP). The LEP’s multi-million pound Access
Innovation programme, supports businesses looking to develop new
products and processes and to access the specialist expertise needed
to achieve this.

EDINBURGH Council is to publish a plan on how the local
authority will support EU citizens during the uncertainty of the
Brexit process. The council’s Corporate Policy and Strategy
Committee also agreed that council leader Adam McVey will write
to the UK Government setting out opposition to any erosion of EU
citizens’ employment rights within the UK after Brexit and
opposing measures such as the register of EU nationals.
The financial services industry in Edinburgh is significantly smaller
than its London equivalent. But 13 per cent of all of Britain’s
banking jobs are in Edinburgh, nearly a quarter of the country’s life
assurance employees are based there, and advocates for Scotland’s
capital suggest that the diversity of Edinburgh’s financial services
activities will make it resilient when the UK leaves the EU.

Aberdeen’s economic output will shrink by up to 3.7%. Centre for

Aberdeen will be to diversify its industrial structure in the years
ahead, so that it is less reliant on one sector (oil and gas). “This will
be crucial for the city to thrive after we leave the EU.”

contribution are factored in. “This funding is already being put to
use to foster innovation and diversification.”
The mood was similarly upbeat at Aberdeen and Grampian
Chamber of Commerce, which represents businesses in the city and
region. Its chief executive, Russell Borthwick, said: “Clearly there
are challenges associated with whatever type of Brexit outcome we
see but we are hopeful that the technology, skills and innovation for
which this area is renowned will stand us in good stead to see this
as an opportunity rather than a threat.”
Dundee
The Brexit Advisory Team, made up of six of the council’s most
senior officials, will monitor Brexit developments and work to
assess its impact on the city. Council leader John Alexander, the
driving force behind a new impact report and the advisory team
proposal, said Dundee had to be ahead of the game in navigating
the “minefield” of Brexit.
Following the most recent round of EU funding for 2014-2020,
Dundee City Council had secured £6.9 million to spend on a variety
of programmes in the city. A report prepared by the office of chief
executive David Martin suggests such funding is unlikely to be
available in future and that Brexit will have a “detrimental” impact.
Inverness
HIGHLAND economist Tony Mackay has declared the region’s
tourism as being one of a few bright spots for the region’s
economy. In his latest monthly round-up, Inverness-based Mr
Mackay suggested the local tourism industry is booming. “One of

SMALLER BUSINESSES’ FSB
Wales - As part of their work on
Brexit, FSB has published four UK-
wide reports covering the key
aspects of Brexit and beyond for
small businesses and the self-
employed. These areas were access
to markets, skills and labour, EU
funding and what next, and finally
the future of EU regulations in the
UK post-Brexit.
There may be uncertainty around
Brexit, but the Welsh Government
is committed to supporting business
growth across Wales with the
launch of the new Development
Bank of Wales.
Business School, argues the
Welsh economy is best
protected by retaining full
access to the European Single
Market and membership of a
customs union.
The paper sets out the severe
impact a hard Brexit would
have on Welsh jobs and the
economy. If the UK were to
move to World Trade
Organisation (WTO) rules, the
Welsh economy could shrink by
8% - 10%, which would be the
equivalent of between £1,500
and £2,000 per person in Wales.

The Hub was initially
established to host projects
funded by the ESRC’s UK in a
Changing Europe Initiative
ahead of the 2016 EU
referendum. Work undertaken
by the Hub team now examines
the implications of Brexit for
Wales as a devolved nation.
Believe that, as this is still a
possibility, there is a need for the
Welsh Government to be doing
more in terms of scenario
planning, including for a ‘no
deal’, to prepare Wales.
Found that people across the
public, private and third sectors in
Wales need a stronger steer from
the Welsh Government about how
they should be preparing for
Brexit. In particular businesses,
like manufacturing and farming,
would welcome more information
on the potential impacts of Brexit.
In terms of engagement, we found
that – whilst there are pockets of
good practice – more needs to be
done to ensure that information is
filtering down through
organisations to the staff and
service providers on the frontline.

EDINBURGH Council is to publish a plan on how the local authority will support EU citizens during the uncertainty of the Brexit
process. The council’s Corporate Policy and Strategy Committee also agreed that council leader Adam McVey will write to the UK
Government setting out opposition to any erosion of EU citizens’ employment rights within the UK after Brexit and opposing
measures such as the register of EU nationals.
The financial services industry in Edinburgh is significantly smaller than its London equivalent. But 13 per cent of all of Britain’s
banking jobs are in Edinburgh, nearly a quarter of the country’s life assurance employees are based there, and advocates for
Scotland’s capital suggest that the diversity of Edinburgh’s financial services activities will make it resilient when the UK leaves the
EU.

UK Fisheries Policy after Brexit: Challenges and Opportunities
Written by the Centre for Cities and the Centre for Economic Performance at the London School Economics, the report predicts
Aberdeen’s economic output will shrink by up to 3.7%. Centre for Cities chief executive Andrew Carter said: “The challenge for
Aberdeen will be to diversify its industrial structure in the years ahead, so that it is less reliant on one sector (oil and gas). “This will
be crucial for the city to thrive after we leave the EU.”
Aberdeen City Council leader, Cllr Jenny Laing, admitted there were “huge challenges” ahead, but said positive strides are being
taken. She said: “In the past year, we have signed the £250 million Aberdeen City Region Deal, which we estimate will be worth a
total of £826m when wider private investment and our own contribution are factored in. “This funding is already being put to use to
foster innovation and diversification.”
The mood was similarly upbeat at Aberdeen and Grampian Chamber of Commerce, which represents businesses in the city and
region. Its chief executive, Russell Borthwick, said: “Clearly there are challenges associated with whatever type of Brexit outcome
we see but we are hopeful that the technology, skills and innovation for which this area is renowned will stand us in good stead to
see this as an opportunity rather than a threat.”

The Brexit Advisory Team, made up of six of the council’s most senior officials, will monitor Brexit developments and work to
assess its impact on the city. Council leader John Alexander, the driving force behind a new impact report and the advisory team

Following the most recent round of EU funding for 2014-2020, Dundee City Council had secured £6.9 million to spend on a variety
of programmes in the city. A report prepared by the office of chief executive David Martin suggests such funding is unlikely to be
