VG-1 San Mai iiiWhen considering a new material or a perormance upgrade or the Cold Steel Tanto, we tested seven dierent grades o steel including

Shiro 2, V-SP-2, 10A, 440C, VG-10, ATS 34, and VG-1. Physical testing or sharpness, edge retention, point strength, shock, and ultimate bladestrength showed that while many o the steels had increased perormance in one or two testing categories, only one, VG-1, showed the greatestperormance increases in the most critical categories. With an outstanding ability to retain an edge and proven strength in point and bladetests, VG-1 will provide Cold Steel customers with superior perormance previously unavailable in a stainless steel blade.

San Mai iii

Our San Mai III blades are comprised o three layers o laminated steel. Laminated construction is important because it allows dierentgrades o steel to be combined in a single blade. A simple way to think o this type o construction is to imagin e a sandwich: The meat ce nteris hard, high carbon steel and the pieces o bread on either side are the lower-carbon, tough side panels. The edge o the blade should be hardto maximize edge holding ability, but i the entire blade was hard it could be damaged during the rigors o battle. For ultimate toughness thebody o the blade must be able to withstand impact and lateral stresses. Toughness is generally associated with sotness and exibilityin steel, so that, surprisingly, i a blade is made tough the edge wont be hard enough to oer superior edge holding. San Mai III provides ablade with hard (higher carbon) steel in the middle or a keen, long lasting edge and tougher (lower-carbon) steel along the sides or exibility.

aUS 8a StainleSSThe words stainless steel are mislea ding, because, in act, all stee l will stain or show discoloration i let in adverse cond itions or a su-

fcient time. Steel is made stainless by adding Chromium and reduci ng its Carbon content during th e smelting process. There is a seriousperormance trade-o with stain less steel. As the Chromium increases and the Carbon decreases, the steel becomes more stainless. But,it also becomes more and more difcult to sharpen, and the edge-holding potential is seriously impaired. This is usually why most stainless

knives are rarely razor-sharp and quickly lose what little edge they have.In contrast, at Cold Steel we use Japanese made AUS 8A Stainless, a high carbon, low chromium steel that has proven itsel to be theultimate compromise between toughness and strength, edge holding, and resistance to corrosion.

GerMan 4116German 4116 is a fne grained, stainless steel made in Germany and is used or hygienic applications (medical devices and the pharmaceuti-

cal industry) and ood processing which make it a superb material or kitchen cutlery. The balance o carbon and chromium content give ita high degree o corrosion resistance and also impressive physical character istics o strength and edge holding. Edge retention in actualcutting tests exceeded blades made o the 420 and 440 series o stainless steels. Other alloying elements contribute to grain refnement whichincrease blade strength and edge toughness and also allow or a fner, sharper edge.

SK-5 HiGH CarbonSK-5 is the Japanese equivalent o American 1080, a high carbon steel with carbon between 0.75%-0.85% and 0.60%-0.90% manganese. As

quenched, it has a hardness near Rc 65 and produces a mixture o carbon rich martensite with some small undissolved carbides. The excesscarbide increases abrasion resistance and allows the steel to achieve an ideal balance o very good blade toughness with superior edge holdingability. Due to these characteristics, this grade o steel has been used traditionally or making a variety o hand tools, including chisels andwoodcutting saws, and has stood the test o time and use over many years in many countries.

o-1 HiGH CarbonO-1 is a high carbon, oil hardening tool steel. The O stands or oil hardening. Popular with custom knie makers because o its versatility,

it can be used or stock removal as well as orged knives and is oten utilized or tomahawks and axes as well. With proper heat treatment, O-1will take and hold a very fne edge while remaining remarkably toug h and durable. Known or its ability to be dierentially heat treated, O-1 isan ideal steel or edged weapons and tools and while more costly than SK-5, it is a decided step-up in perormance.

1055 Carbon1055 steel is right on the border between a medium and a high carbon steel, with a carbon content between 0.50%-0.60% and with

manganese between 0.60%-0.90% as the only other component. The carbon content and lean alloy make this a shallow hardening steel with aquenched hardness between Rc 60-64 depending on exact carbon content. These combination o actors make this one o the toughest steels

available because, when quenched, it produces a near saturated lathe martensite with no excess carbides, avoiding the brittleness o highercarbon materials. This steel is particularly suited to applications where strength and impact resistance is valued above all other consider-ations and will produce blades o almost legendary toughness.

documented in our Proo DVD series. Weve made dierent variations o the Kukri over the years, some withlonger blades, and some with shorter, but never, until now, have we been able to oer one you can carry inyour pocket as a older.

rajaH ii: The Rajah II, designed by Andrew Demko, approximates the eel and het o afxed blade Kukri. For example, its broad, downward curved blade exh ibits the best o a Kukris characteris-tics as its unique shape presents the thin hollow ground edge at just the right angle so it naturally bitesdeep instead o bouncing or skidding o a target. And , its point is thick, wide, and sharp enough to piercethe toughest targets.

The handle o the Rajah II also shares some o the contours o a fxed blade Kukri with the addition ostrategically placed curves and fnger grooves. T hese eatures will acilitate 3 grip options. One; very closeto the cutting edge wher e you can really choke up on the handle or fne or delicate work. Two; by themiddle or ordinary cutting chores. And three; near the end or butt where you will have the maximum reachadvantage and the most leverage and weight orward balance or heavy cutting or chopping.

Carry the Rajah II as you would any older, using the ambidextrous clip to attach it to any reasonably sizedpocket or clip it in your waistband. In an emergency all you have to do is grab it and open it with one hand inthe conventional manner or snag its unique thumb plate on the edge o a pocket and snap it open.

The only suitable lock that ca n sustain the incredible impac t orces generated by chopping str okes with ourRajah II is our Tri-Ad lock (see page 4). Desi gned specifcally to take the pressure o the smaller, moreragile interloc king suraces o a conventi onal rocker lock and transer the m to a uniquely positioned stop pinthat will absorb and distribute them through the steel reinorced Griv-Ex handle.

rajaH iii:The Rajah III is basically a scaled down, more pocket riendly, version o its bigbrother. Designed by Andrew Demko, it shares almost all the major eatur es o the Rajah II including an AUS8A stainless blade, Tri-Ad lock, thumb plate opener, ambidextrous pocket clips, and a Griv-Ex handle withAluminum liners or extra strength and rigidity.

The Rajah IIIs handle oers a number o grip options due to its careully sculptured shape and cross sec-tion and is particularly well suited to the reverse grip thanks to a unique thumb shel built into the butt.

SPartanThe word Spartan conju res up the vivid history o the battle o Thermopylae,

a story o enormous courage in the ace o devastating odds. The Spartanswere a tough breed, trained rom childhood in the art o war and inured to mostprivations, both mental and physical. Engaging them at close quarters wassomething to be eared and avoided, as their amous Kopis swords struck oarms and legs like a scythe in a wheat feld!

Designed by Andrew Demko, the Cold Steel Spartan is a olding Kopis scaleddown to accommodate the demands o a tamer, more sophisticated world. The4 1/2" blade evokes the classic Kopis o the ancients with its characteristicrecurved edge, big belly and sharp, acute point. Its hollow ground rom Japa-nese AUS 8A stainless and has some similarities with a Kukri. Like the Kukri,the Spartan always presents its edge at an angle to the material being cut toproduce a deep sheering eect. However, since its point is narrower and moreacute than most Kukri blades, it stabs almost as well as it cuts.

The Spartan

also echoes the ancient Kopis in its handle. Its designed tohelp the hand resist the pull o centriugal orce and to retard orward momen-tum, when stabbing, or backward movement, when hammering or smashingwith its pommel. Injection molded out o Griv-Ex with steel liners or strength,its heavily contoured or comort and eatures irregular uting and a heavilytextured surace fnish or an exceptionally eective grip.

The Spartan has dual pocket clips to assure ambidextrous carry and orquick draw opening, it eatures a thumb plate that can be used to open theknie like a conventional one handed opener or be snagged on the edge oa pocket during the draw stroke and opened automatically. Additionally, itincorporates our Tri-Ad locking mechanism, which has proven, under torturetesting to be almost impervious to stress, strain and shock. aK- 47 SerieSIn 1947 Mikhail Kalashnikov, the legendary Russian gun designer, cre-

ated the AK-47 assault rie. Eventually adopted by the Red Army in 1949,it became amous as the Peoples Rie. Such renown was well deserved,as it was an utterly reliable weapon. It was rugged, simple to operate andmaintain, economical, and eective at reasonable ranges. T his weapon, andall it represents became the inspiration or our heavy-duty tactical knives,the AK-47 olders. Designed by Andrew Demko, the AK-47s possess all othe attributes o their namesake, and perhaps a ew more.

Theyre built or hard and rugge d use and are available in two sizes. Bothsizes have many eatures in common. For instance, both are equipped withG-10 handles that oer a vigorous grip that is remarkably tough, rigid andincomparably strong. Also, each size comes with a unique pommel made outo 6061 aluminum. The pommels eature a lanyard hole and can also serve asa less than lethal percussion tool in a sel-deense situation.

Additionally, the hollow ground blades are honed by hand until they reachlevels o sharpness only seen on a surgeons scalpel. Theyre made romJapanese AUS 8A Stainless steel, then vacuum heat-treated and sub zeroquenched or maximum toughness. The blades are coated with black Tu-Ex or corrosion resistance and to enhance cutting power and to improveedge retention by reducing riction.

The blades are supported by our state o the art Tri-Ad lock. In our test-ing, the Tri-Ad has proved to be superior to any other lock on the markettoday in terms o overall strength and resistance to shock induced by blowson the spine (eclipsing virtually all locks in short order) or the even moredevastating shock by over-strike that lands on the handle.

Finally, to assure easy access, the AK-47 s come with an ambidextrouspocket clip and our new patented thumb plate. The thumb plate has a dualpurpose, it allows the knie to be drawn and quickly opened by snagging it onthe edge o a pocket or it can be used like a conventional thumb stud or disc

or easy, one-handed opening.

and strong locking mechanisms, have had a certain mystiquesince they were frst popularized in the early 1980s. They werebeguilingly simple in construction, looked a little intimidating ina users hand, were relatively inexpensive, and there were many

ashy ways to open them with a ew det turns o the wrist. Inshort, they were a knie industry success story.

There was just one downside. In the early 1990s, Unite dStates Customs outlawed the importation o all buttery knivesunder, what can only be assumed to be, an arbitrary and unrea-sonable interpretation o the Switchblade Act. Many U.S. statessoon ollowed suit including Caliornia, where mere possessiono a Buttery knie is a FELONY.

But Cold Steel has produced a completely legal version othe buttery knie that we call The Paradox. Available in twosizes, its designed rom the ground up to specifcally mimic atraditional Balisong or Buttery knie in every respect but one it cant be opened with one hand! Well made blades deserve equally well-made grips. A lot o time and energy went into theproduction o our T shaped handles. KobUnThe Kobun is a lightweight Tanto styled boot knie. It takes

its namesake rom the Japanese Yakuza, or martial underworld,where the word Kobun is a kind o indicator o rank thatsuggests the word soldier, or one who takes orders romhis Oyabun or boss. Its a ftting name or a knie like theKobun, which was eectively designed to be a good soldier.

In profle it closely resembles our Master Tanto, but it sportsa thinner blade, and that supports its main unction; to be alight weight boot knie.

Like our Tantos, it eatures the Tanto styled reinorcedpoint. This contrasts sharply with most boot knives on the mar-ket today which are notorious or their paper thin points whichare easily broken or bent. In contrast, the Kobuns point ishighly resistant to bending or breaking because it is reinorcedby the ull thickness o the blades spine which runs almost tothe very tip o the blade.

The Kobuns deeply checkered Kray-Ex handle is designedto oer minimum bulk with maximum grip. Its cross sectionwas made as thin as possible (approximately 1/2 inch) , thencontoured to resist turning or shiting in the hand.

doUble aGentSerieSCold Steels Double Agent neck knives possess a signifcant

set o advantages worth noting. Designed by Zach Whitson, witheither a Karambit or Clip Point blade style, theyre thin, at, andsuper light (a little over 3 ounces including sheath). fttings. The Tsuba (guard), Fuc hi (collar), andKashira (pommel), are expertly made and fnelycrated in nickel-silver brass.

The Habaki (blade collar) is hand made outo nickel-silver brass and each hilt is coveredin Sam (ray skin) and tightly wrapped in thetraditional style with black silk cord. A beautiulMenuki (a small, ornamental sculpture thatsinserted between the ray skin and the cordwrappings on the handle) enhances the swordsaesthetic appearance and makes or a swordthat is as traditional looking as we can possiblymake it.

All o the Emperor swords eature ullysharpened 1055 carbon steel blades that are heattreated to a spring temper. The blade surace isthen given a careul, hand fnished polish, witha distinctive mirror polish applied to the uller(blood groove).

Most swords oered today are interpretive copies o antiquities rom eudal Japan. Theywere made or warriors o small stature who seldom rose above fve and a hal eet. Asskillully designed as these swords are, they may not be perectly suited or the twenty frstcentury warrior, who benefted rom contemporary advancesin childhood nutrition and healthcare and grew up to be asubstantially taller, stronger, and more athletic version o hishistorical counterpart.

As a way o compensating or this size disparity, Cold Steelhas created the Dragony Series. These swords eature thicker,wider and heavier blades, which mirror our Emperor Series inrespect to heat treatment, polish, quality o urnishings, andattention to detail, but with a ew new departures.

Most noticeable are the distinctive teal-green silk cord-wrapand black sam (ray skin) used on the handles and the black

swordbreAker The ancient Chinese Sword Breaker had a rectangular (oc-casionally hollow ground) cross section with sharp corners making it possible or it to ocus

a blow with maximum impact. Such a blow could, at the veryleast, beat an opponents blade aside or so ar out o line thatrecovery in time to mount a deense was virtually impossible.At the most, it could live up to its name and could break, bendor disable conventional swords and many other weapons with asingle blow! In either scenario, one is let powerless to avoid theSword Breakers imposingly erocious point. Luckily, there were
