Tech Prep: College credit or Apprenticeship programs

Tech Prep is an articulation agreement between the Anchorage School District and post-secondary education institutions such as the University of Alaska Anchorage (UAA), University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF) or various Apprenticeship Programs (*) . ASD students can earn lower division college credit when successfully completing high school tech/prep courses or other advancements with the Apprenticeship Programs . College credits provide a head start toward a post-secondary certification or degree and are transferable to other universities or colleges . Tech Prep agreements with other institutions or organizations may vary . The following King Career Center courses presently have Tech Prep agreements:• Advanced Health Career Pathways• Automotive Maintenance Technology• Aviation Maintenance• Aviation Technology• Carpentry*• Computer Information Technology• Construction Electricity*• Culinary Arts• Early Childhood Education• Electronics & Telecommunications• EMT• Fire & Rescue Services• Horticulture & Landscape Design• Natural Resources Management• Public Safety & Security• Welding*Tech Prep agreements are added periodically; please check the website (asdk12 .org/schools/KCC/pages) for the most up-to-date listings . 4* KCC is proud to have partnerships with

the following unions that may provide our students opportunities for on-the-job training and potential direct interview into apprenticeships: NECA/IBEW; Alaska Joint Electrical Apprenticeship and Training Trust; Alaska Laborers’ 341; Plumbers and Pipefitters; GCI; Sheet Metal Workers; NC Machinery; Southern Alaska Carpenters Union Training Center; Alaska Associated Builders and Contractors of Alaska, Inc.; Operating Engineers/Employers Training Trust; and Ironworkers Local Union 751.

* These post-secondary schools have articulation agreements: AVTEC; University of Alaska Anchorage; University of Alaska Fairbanks; and Kenai Peninsula College.

* A limited number of “direct interview” opportunities into apprenticeship programs for high performing KCC students is typical. The programs listed above as well as the IBEW, the Alaska Laborers Training School, NC Machinery, and Piledrivers, Bridge, Dock Builders and Divers Local 2520 have been regular partners with KCC.

Special education services

The Special Education staff at KCC work in collabora tion with a student’s home high school to provide services for students experiencing a disability . A special education teacher assistant is assigned to each KCC class . The teacher assistant, in collaboration with the KCC special education department chair, monitors student progress and provides individual assistance to students as needed . Students select a KCC class with help and assistance from their home high school Transition Specialist . Students may enter a regular vocational program or our Work Readiness program (page 11) depending on the student’s individual needs and goals .

KCC full day program

For a limited number of students staying at King Career Center, the all-day program is an excellent option . Students will earn academic credits through ASD iSchool and APEX online classes delivered in a computer lab for half the day, and take their KCC CTE class the other half of the day . Supported by a highly qualified certificated teacher in the lab, students will work on a variety of core requirements . Students will continue to be enrolled at their “home” schools, be eligible to participate in all extra-curricular activities, and ultimately graduate with their class .

On-the-job Training

Students who participate in OJT will work in a business practicing skills learned in their KCC class . It is a chance to “try on a career” before they leave high school and pay for training in technical school, college or apprenticeships . It can be taken for one or two semesters depending upon the class . Students in grades 11 or 12 must have completed one or more semesters of a KCC class and must meet the following criteria: good attendance, a grade of “A” or “B,” and a teacher recommendation for “professionalism .” Students with an Individual Education Plan (IEP) may access services from the Special Education Vocational Trainer if they meet the above criteria . Upon teacher recommendation, students may fill out appropriate paper work with the OJT Coor di na tor and begin the application process . Students go to work each day instead of coming to KCC and will earn KCC credit . Most OJT positions are non-paid . Students will receive valuable training that they normally would pay for in a technical school or college .

King Career Center Student Handbook 37Attendance

Good attendance and punctuality are two of the most important attributes to acquiring and maintaining a great career . Therefore both are extremely important to your success at the King Career Center .Please notify KCC about all student absences. Your home school does not contact us when you are absent . This means your parent must make two phone calls: one to your home high school and one to KCC . Courses at KCC include a professionalism component that is 25 percent of the total grade . This component includes attendance, punctuality, general work habits, and attitude in completing assigned projects .Attendance Phone Number: 742-8902Main Office Phone Number: 742-8900• A notification letter is given to students who have accumulated five

(5) absences . Teachers will call parent/guardians regarding this notice .

• When ten (10) absences are accumulated, the student is placed on attendance probation after a conference with an administrator and parent notification .

• When fifteen (15) absences are accumulated, the student is withdrawn from his/her KCC class and does not receive credit for the class . Doctor, dentist, orthodontic appointments and family vacation that are pre-arranged DO count toward the 15 absences .

• Students with poor attendance will not receive preferential treatment for scheduling into future KCC classes .

Blue Passes

Students who are issued blue passes to leave school are counted as an excused absence . This absence will count towards the maximum allowable before withdrawal (15 absences) for non-attendance . Please notify KCC if you Blue Pass from your home school and will miss your KCC class .

Chronic medical illness

Students who have recurring medical problems that prevent them from attending school can have more than 15 absences without being withdrawn . However, the following conditions apply: • A Chronic Medical Illness Form must be obtained from the KCC

office, signed by a parent or guardian, completed and signed by a doctor, and kept on file at KCC prior to the absences in question . The completed form should include a doctor’s statement that clearly describes the nature of the illness and the anticipated length of absence .

• Only those absences that are the result of a chronic medical illness

and for which there is appropriate documentation on file (Chronic Medical Illness form and doctor’s note) do not count towards KCC Center attendance withdrawal policy . All other absences do count towards the maximum . The only exceptions to this are emergency situations, such as surgery, accident, etc . which cannot be anticipated ahead of time . In these circumstances, a Chronic Medical Illness form can be obtained, signed, and placed on file in the office after the fact . However, proper documentation will have to be on file so that these absences will not count towards the attendance withdrawal policy .

Home school assemblies and activities

Students who attend a home school function during their KCC class without informing the office prior to their missing class will be counted as absent . This absence will count towards the maximum allowable before withdrawal (15 absences) for non-attendance . The only exceptions will be for those students who are required to attend the home-school function or the participation in a pre-acknowledged extracurricular activity with a list provided by the sponsor or coach . In those cases, students must secure permission of the Assistant Principal of KCC before the assembly or function .

Perfect Attendance Award

Those students at KCC who are able to complete the semester with perfect attendance are honored with a certificate and are recognized at the end of the semester . Attendance is a very important part of job performance, thus perfect attendance deserves special commendation .

Reminder: Under the Anchorage School District attendance policy, pre-arranged absences count towards total absences leading to withdrawal and non-granting of credit .

The professionalism component of each grade accounts for 25 percent of the total grade for the course . Punctuality is considered a critical job skill and will form a significant part of the professionalism

Truancies

A student is considered truant if he/she is away from the class without the teacher’s permission . Visiting other classes without the permission of both teachers is prohibited as it is disruptive to the instructional process . Students who attend their home school on a particular day but fail to attend KCC are counted as truant (the only exception is having a blue pass or an official school activity) . Truancies may be dealt with according to the following sanctions:
