Introduction
ne day a friend, Joe Hughes, came to me with a trip that he thought we should go on. “Route 66” he said. So we planned a trip to Joplin where we turned right on the old route. As we travelled Route 66 we thought we would find shops with Route 66 item’s. Finally in Adrian, TX we found just such a place. We looked for a book that would keep us on the route and found one from 1946 and another from the 1990’s but none that had complete and up to date information. As we traveled the “Mother Road” we talked about the type of publication that would be helpful and the sections that would be needed to complete a dream book for Route 66. As we traveled “The Mother Road” again the next year we thought we would remember where the turns would be but we still had a hard time staying on the old route. The need for a Route 66 travel guide became more apparent. Opening By: Dave Emerson

INTRODUCTION
Introduction Kind Words From a Fellow “Roadie” There are never a lack of ideas or projects when it comes to promot-ing Route 66. Most never get off the ground for a number of reasons but the number one reason is the person that came up with the idea gives up too soon. Or worst keeps going without the proper research to make the project add value to the road and the finish product is lacking in quality. When I first heard from Dave his idea sounded like it had merit and could fill a void that the road was missing. As time want by and it was obvious Dave was not giving up and was out on the road doing the proper research, as well as meeting and sharing his ideas with the right people. The Route 66 Community might be spread out from Chicago to Santa Monica but we have a way of sharing the good as well as the bad with each other. The over promise and under deliver just don’t work on Route 66, we protect each other. Dave has proven that one, he was a good guy and second, he had a good idea that would sup-port the future of the road. I do not give my endorsement very lightly and it can never be bought. If Dave’s finished product is as good as the drafts I have seen, then he has come up with a winner. One that will add one more element to the promotion of our beloved Route 66.Introduction By: Jim Conkle One question I get asked the most is this “What is it that makes Route 66 so popular?” There are many answers to that age old question but the best is, “The road is all about the people”. You might think it is about cars, motorcycles and the viewscape or the attractions you can find on the road. Yes they each add something to the experience but it truly is the PEOPLE that makes Route 66 the magical place it is. Stop to meet, spend some time with and get to know them. They come from all walks of life and from around the world, yet the road brings us all together. Yes there are issues that could come between us but we set them aside as we look for the commonality to bond us not divide us. When ever I am on the road, which in my case is just about all the time, I plan to see old friends and make new ones every day. That is not hard to do when you open your eyes, mind and heart to the rhythm of the road. This is not to say that everyone you meet is going to become your new best friend but they could if you let them. Many times there is a language barrier but even that becomes a small matter when you have the same passion and openness. Now with e-mails and the ability to transfer your message into most other languages no one is a stranger. Then add a digital camera, photo opportunities are always a way to break the ice. Sending your new friends the photos you took of them is easy and the cost is zero, but the return is priceless. Over the years I have met folks from every coun-try on the planet, some we have stayed in contact with and become good friends. So the term ‘roadie’ means more then just someone that travels or knows the road, it means you live and understand the road. The road belongs to all of us and we each play an important role in its success.
I was once asked how long should someone plan to take to travel the
road. My answer is a ‘LIFETIME’.Good Luck!Story By: Jim Conkle

History of the Mother RoadReturn to the Mother Road
At a Total length of 2,448 miles on opening day Route 66 became the most popular Highway in the world. In 1926 Route 66 was a dream come true for Americans all across the U.S. Starting in Chicago and ending in L. A., Route 66 connects these two Seaports together allowing the trucking industry to flourish. U.S. Highway 66 was commissioned on Nov. 11, 1926. Three years later “The Mother Road” stretched too it’s longest at 2,499 miles. Businessmen Cyrus Avery of Tulsa, Oklahoma, & John Woodruff of Springfield, Missouri deserve most of the credit for promoting the idea of linking these two seaports between Illinois & California. They lobbied until their dreams merged with the national program of highway and road development. “The Mother Road was created by connecting together Main Streets of towns and old trails started by Indians, Military and animal trackers of the time. Route 66 Gets a shot in the arm in the 1930’s “The New Deal”. This Federal Program From 1933 to 1938 put thousands of jobless men from back to work. These laborers worked on Route 66 by day and lived next to the road by night. Through these years they pave the final stretches of the road. Because of the hard work of these dedicated men, Route 66, “the Chicago to Los Angeles highway” was reported to be “continuously paved” in 1938. Alignment Changes on Route 66 Started in June 1935, extending from down-town Los Angeles to Santa Monica. The same day Route 66 was rerouted over the Chain of Rocks Bridge in north St. Louis. In September 1937, it was moved to include Santa Rosa to Albuquerque, NM, by passing Santa Fe. Two hard sections of paving on U.S. 66 was also completed in the 1930’s. These sections are located in Missouri between Rolla, and Lebanon which had been closed for a year during construction and re-opened on March 15, 1931. 8,000 people attend a celebration in Rolla, Mo. One of these sections is still referred to as “Hookers Cut”, which was at that time the largest limestone cut in U. S. Highway history. By mid-1938, paving is completed on the last unpaved section of Route 66. That section was in Oldham County, TX between Adrian and Glenrio. This completed the Chicago to Santa Monica Route 66 as we know it today. Illinois & Kansas was the 1st & 2nd State completely paved. Missouri was the 3rd to Finish its portion of Route 66 and they completed this state on January 5, 1931. Route 66 helped to start the single greatest wartime mobilization of manpower in our history. Between 1941 and 1945 our government invested approximately $70 billion in Federal Highway projects throughout California, and a large por-tion of the southwest. Also the southwest was selected to be home for several military bases which were in the Los Angeles, area and other areas of the southwest. This large amount of tax dollars served to start entirely new industries that created thousands of civilian jobs through out the U.S. After the war, Americans were more mobile than ever before. Thousands of former military personal who received military training in Arizona, California, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Texas moved to these areas to avoid the cold winters of the northeast for the warm dry weather of the Southwest. Route 66 provided an easy way to complete their move. Businessmen of this era recognized early on that travelers of Route 66 would need food, auto repair and place to stay. Most Americans who traveled “The Mother Road” did not stay in hotels in most cases. They stayed at motels which came from auto camps and the tourist homes. Auto camps and tourist homes gave way to motor courts which then became the Motel that we know today. Later they added restaurants, souvenir shops and even some with swimming pools. After World War II our economy was booming and the strain on our national highway system had left our roads in rough condition. Route 66 in the 1950’s brought many motorists to an already strained highway system. The new federal interstate system that lobbyists in Washington were talking about was supported and pushed by the White House.

ROUTE 66 HISTORY
History of the Mother Road The Federal Aid Highway Act of 1956 was voted in by Congress and thus the beginning of the demise of Route 66. Route 66 was passed by in the 70’s by the new federal interstate system. By this time the main flow of traffic had shifted to the new interstates. So, some small towns were by passed. This caused ghost towns in certain areas. The last section of Route 66 that was decommissioned happened in October 1984 when the final section of Interstate 40 at Williams, Arizona was completed. As Route 66 celebrates its 81st birthday and that this point we find about 85% of the old route is accessible and open for a great way to see America. As we think about Route 66, one might remember the “First Annual Interna-tional -Trans-Continental Foot Race”, or the “Bunion Derby” as it came to be known. The race started in Los Angeles on March 4, 1928, and covered the entire length of 66 to Chicago, and then went on to Madison Square Garden in New York, ending on May 26, 1928. The race, and the first prize of $25,000, is won by Andy Payne, a 20 year-old from Claremore, Oklahoma - a Route 66 town and the stomping ground of Will Rogers. He covers 3,422.3 miles in 84 days, with an actual running time of 573 hours, 4 minutes and 34 seconds. Early on Route 66 became apart of our American pop culture. Books, Movies, TV Shows and Songs glorified our national treasure. On June 22nd, 1952, the old Chain of Rocks Bridge in north St. Louis was the first of eight stops dedicat-ing U.S. 66 as the Will Rogers Highway, as part of a cross-country promotional tour for the movie “The Story of Will Rogers”. Who can ever forget John Steinbeck’s 1939 novel and 1940 movie, “The Grapes of Wrath”, which chronicles the forced westward migration of the “Ok-ies” from their bank-foreclosed farms through the eyes of the road family. Or Bobby Troup’s 1946 hit, “Get Your Kicks on Route 66” “Don’t forget Winona”, and the 1946 book by Jack Rittenhouse, “A Guide Book to Highway 66” which mile-by-mile describes gas stations, diners and places to see. Then, in the early 60s, another generation learned about Route 66 when Buz and Todd spent 116 TV episodes traveling America in their Corvette. Route 66 became a destination unto itself. With its caverns, scenic mountains, beautiful canyons and sparkling deserts being heavily promoted by the U.S. 66 Highway Association, Route 66 became the ultimate road trip. This spawned trading posts, full-service gas stations, grills with fried chicken, “blue plate specials” and home-made pie, mom and pop motor courts, Native American festivals and every other type of tourist traps known to man. Unfortunately, with the advent of the interstate system, Route 66 became a victim of its own success. The road was decommissioned piecemeal by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) as interstate construc-tion progressed. Route 66 was completely decertified the last 1,162 mile on June 27, 1985. The last section of old 66, 5.7 miles through Williams, Arizona was bypassed on October 13, 1984. Route 66 was “replaced” by Interstates 55, 44, 40, 15 and 10. As a side note, in December 1962, Missouri petitioned AASHTO, on behalf of all the Route 66 states, to have the interstates renumbered as I-66 from Chicago to Los Angeles. Needless to say, the request was refused. Route 66, however, like a stubborn maverick, refused to die. The old road is still with us today, and now is the time for another genera-tion to learn about and experience this great highway. To spearhead this effort, Route 66 Associations have been established and are active in all 8 Route 66 states, with a stated mission “to preserve, promote and develop old Route 66 - The Main Street of America”. In Missouri, the Route 66 Association of Missouri originated from the ef-forts of dedicated volunteers who, in the fall of 1989, realized old 66 de-served recognition and preservation. The Association is a qualified 501(c)(3) non-profit Missouri corporation, started on January 13, 1990. This History of the Mother Road has been assembled by Dave Emerson from several sources including History books, Street of towns that (AASHTO) & Assorted Route 66 Associations In each State. So i hope your next vacation takes your family and friends down “The Mother Road” to new adventures and old sites of our great nation. Have a great time on the Mother Road. . By Dave Emerson

History of the Mother RoadOrignial U.S. Highway
U.S. Route 66 (also known as the Will Rogers Highway after the humorist, and colloquially known as the “Main Street of America” or the “Mother Road”) was a highway in the Federal Highway System. One of the original U.S. highways, Route 66, US Highway 66, was established on November 11, 1926. However, road signs did not go up until the following year. The famous highway originally ran from Chicago, Illinois, through Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and California, before ending at Los Angeles, encompassing a total of 2,448 miles (3,940 km). It was recognized in popular culture by both a hit song (written by Bobby Troup in 1946 and performed by the Nat King Cole Trio and The Rolling Stones, among others) and the Route 66 television show in the 1960s. More recently, the 2006 Disney/Pixar film Cars featured U.S. 66. Route 66 underwent many improvements and realignments over its lifetime, changing its path and overall length. Many of the realignments gave travelers faster or safer routes, or detoured around city congestion. One realignment moved the western endpoint farther west from downtown Barstow to Santa Monica. Route 66 was a major path of the migrants who went west, especially during the Dust Bowl of the 1930s, and supported the economies of the communi-ties through which the road passed. People doing business along the route became prosperous due to the growing popularity of the highway, and those same people later fought to keep the highway alive even with the growing threat of being bypassed by the new Interstate Highway System. US 66 was officially removed from the United States Highway System on June 27, 1985 after it was decided the route was no longer relevant and had been replaced by the Interstate Highway System. Portions of the road that passed through Illinois, Missouri, New Mexico, and Arizona have been designated a National Scenic Byway of the name “Historic Route 66”. It has begun to return to maps in this form. Some portions of the road in southern California have been redesignated “State Route 66”, and others bear “Historic Route 66” signs and relevant historic information. Over the years, U.S. Route 66 received many nicknames. Right after Route 66 was commissioned, it was known as “The Great Diagonal Way” because the Chicago-to-Oklahoma City stretch ran northeast to the southwest. Later, Route 66 was advertised by the U.S. Highway 66 Association as “The Main Street of America”. The title had also been claimed by supporters of U.S. Route 40, but the Route 66 group was more successful. In the John Steinbeck novel The Grapes of Wrath, the highway is called “The Mother Road”, its prevailing title today. Lastly, Route 66 was unofficially named “The Will Rogers Highway” by the U.S. Highway 66 Association in 1952, although a sign along the road with that name appeared in the John Ford film, The Grapes of Wrath, which was released in 1940, twelve years before the association gave the road that name. A plaque dedicating the highway to Will Rogers is still located in Santa Monica, California. There are more plaques like this; one can be found in Galena, Kansas. It was originally located on the Kansas-Missouri state line, but moved to the Howard Litch Memorial Park in 2001.
Before the U.S. Highway system In 1857, Lt. Edward Fitzgerald Beale, a Naval officer in the service of the U.S. Army Topographical Corps, was ordered by the War Department to build a government-funded wagon road across the 35th Parallel. His secondary orders were to test the feasibility of the use of camels as pack animals in the southwestern desert. This road became part of U.S. Route 66.Before a nationwide network of numbered highways was adopted by the states, named auto trails were marked by private organizations. The route that would become Route 66 was covered by three highways. The Lone Star Route passed through St. Louis on its way from Chicago to Cameron, Louisiana, though US 66 would take a shorter route through Bloomington rather than Peoria. The transcontinental National Old Trails Road led via St. Louis to Los Angeles, but was not followed until New Mexico; instead US 66 used one of the main routes of the Ozark Trails system, which ended at the National Old Trails Road

History of the Mother Roadjust south of Las Vegas, New Mexico. Again, a shorter route was taken, here following the Postal Highway between Oklahoma City and Amarillo. Finally, the National Old Trails Road became the rest of the route to Los Angeles. Although entrepreneurs Cyrus Avery of Tulsa, Oklahoma, and John Wood-ruff of Springfield, Missouri deserve most of the credit for promoting the idea of an interregional link between Chicago and Los Angeles, their lobbying efforts were not realized until their dreams merged with the national program of highway and road development. While legislation for public highways first appeared in 1916, with revisions in 1921, it was not until Congress enacted an even more comprehensive version of the act in 1925 that the government executed its plan for national highway construction.Officially, the numerical designation 66 was assigned to the Chicago-to-Los Angeles route in the summer of 1926. With that designation came its ac-knowledgment as one of the nation’s principal east-west arteries. From the outset, public road planners intended U.S. 66 to connect the main streets of rural and urban communities along its course for the most practical of reasons: most small towns had no prior access to a major national thoroughfare.
Birth and rise of Route 66 A remnant of an original “STATE” right-of-way marker serves as a “ghost” of the early days of the road’s construction. This was part of the 1927 construc-tion of Route 66.Championed by Tulsa, Oklahoma businessman Cyrus Avery when the first talks about a national highway system began, US 66 was first signed into law in 1927 as one of the original U.S. Highways, although it was not completely paved until 1938. Avery was adamant that the highway have a round number and had proposed number 60 to identify it. A controversy erupted over the number 60, largely from delegates from Kentucky which wanted a Virginia Beach–Los Angeles highway to be US 60 and US 62 be-tween Chicago and Springfield, Missouri. Arguments and counter-arguments continued and the final conclusion was to have US 60 run between Virginia Beach, Virginia, and Springfield, Missouri, and the Chicago–L.A. route be US 62. Avery settled on “66” (which was unassigned) because he thought the double-digit number would be easy to remember as well as pleasant to say and hear. The state of Missouri released its 1926 state highway map with the highway labeled as U.S. Route 60. After the new federal highway system was officially created, Avery called for the establishment of the U.S. Highway 66 Association to promote the complete paving of the highway from end to end and to promote travel down the highway. In 1927, in Tulsa, the association was officially established with John T. Woodruff of Springfield, Missouri elected the first president. In 1928, the association made its first attempt at publicity, the “Bunion Derby”, a footrace from Los Angeles to New York City, of which the path from Los Angeles to Chicago would be on Route 66. The publicity worked: several dignitaries, including Will Rogers, greeted the runners at certain points on the route. The association went on to serve as a voice for businesses along the highway until it disbanded in 1976. When the highway was decommissioned, sections of the road were dis-posed of in various ways. Within many cities, the route became a “business loop” for the interstate. Some sections became state roads, local roads, private drives, or were abandoned completely. Although it is no longer possible to drive Route 66 uninterrupted all the way from Chicago to Los Angeles, much of the original route and alternate alignments are still drivable with careful planning. Some stretches are quite well preserved, including one between Springfield, Missouri, and Tulsa. Some sections of Route 66 still retain their historic eight-foot-wide “sidewalk highway” form, never having been resurfaced to make them into full-width highways. By Ron Hart

History of the Mother RoadThe Old Road With Many Names
The Old Road with many Names In reference to discussions regarding what kind of vehicle one would like to take on a Mother Road adventure, I conclude that it really makes no difference unless (and until) you learn the history of this highway. When the Route was commissioned in 1926, the most popular car of that time, and likely to have traveled on the first segment, was the Model T Ford. By the time U.S. Highway 66 was completed twelve years later, America had suffered through the Dust Bowl and the Great Depression, resulting in the greatest population shift ever, and 66 was then known as “the way west”, the “Road America took to the American Dream” and after Steinbeck’s 1939 novel (The Grapes of Wrath), it was often called “The Mother Road”. In the early 40’s, the Route was heavily used by the military to transport weapons and troops, and after the war it finally entered it’s “heyday”. People were finally using Highway 66 to take vacations, and the travel and tourist courts became flashy, sometimes funky art- deco places to spend the night. Filling stations were everywhere and the drive-in diners and drive-in theaters were all the rage. Those good times continued through the 1950’s, but sud-denly ended when the Interstates finally began to replace large portions of the Route, which then became service roads, city streets, county roads or second-ary state highways. To many, Route 66 was then known as the “Old Road” and the “Forgotten Road”, and it’s “de-commissioning” became official in 1985. It didn’t take long before certain visionaries and history buffs “adopted” the orphaned highway and began the restoration, preservation and promotional efforts that have continued to grow stronger, and reap more successes every year since. Today, I personally like to describe this famous and historic road as “Route 66...America’s Longest Attraction”, and no matter what kind of vehicle you use to travel on it, remember those who also made the trip these past eighty-two years. “It is said that when you travel this “Old Road”, and you find yourself on a lonely, deserted stretch, you should pull-over, get out of your car and sit in the grass. Close your eyes and listen...and in a few moments you will hear the sounds of those model-T’s, rickety trucks and sometimes the tears and laughter of those early travelers as they pass-by. You will never forget that sound for the rest of your life.” Ron Hart
Are you “promoting” the Mother Road? I often hear others say that driving cross country on Route 66 in the 1950’s was not as comfortable and safe as taking the interstate today. While that may be true, it was because those 50’s travelers on 66 were likely just as interested in getting to their “destination” as interstate drivers are today. Perhaps they, and their kids, grew up remembering those stops along the way, like the Indian trading posts, the unique eating establishments, the eye-catching Burma-Shave signs and funky at-tractions, and are today “reliving” those half-century old trips when they re-visit the old road and see those old tourist traps and other Icons being restored. The difference today is that the “journey” is more important than reaching a destination. Pulling onto Route 66 IS the “destination” for many. I encourage parents to take the extra time to travel with their children on portions of Route 66, and make that trip their “vaca-tion destination” . Besides being an opportunity to teach them

ROUTE 66 HISTORY
9
History of the Mother RoadAmerican history, everyone will learn lessons about economics, geography, math, human nature and more! Use the movie “CARS” as a teaching tool, and maybe the parents and kids will grow closer, and the headphones and DVD players will be ignored in favor of looking out the window for the next “Cool” place on the map. Are we Route-Roadies do-ing all we can to attract “new” visitors to the Mother Road? We, who are grandparents, can easily recall and long for those good old days, but those memories were somewhat “accidental” in nature. We can restore and protect what we can, but we need to attract others to take our place, and we need to start with the kids (and their parents). Here are some suggestions to get started:1. Route 66 Guidebooks, and other printed materials, should include a tutorial for parents on how to make finding icons a “game”. The more kids (and the parents) learn about what to look for, the more likely they will consider a Route 66 trip an “Adventure”.2. Offer to speak to your area schools about Route 66. I have done this a few times, and was amazed at the interest and feedback I received. I played clips from “Cars”, then explained what the meaning was, and the lesson learned. I always leave some handouts for the kids to take home, listing interesting websites to visit, and a note to the parents extrolling the fun to be had by visiting a “Route 66 near you”.3. Many Route 66 businesses of-fer something for the kids, but most cater to the person with the billfold or the purse. We need to make a fond memory for the kids so THEY will want to come back when they are
the parents. I took my daughter to Disney World several times when she was young, and she (and her husband) took their kids, and are going back again this summer. Disney, and other attractions work because they target the KIDS!. There is no reason why Route 66 should not become “Ameri-ca’s Longest Attraction”, but this will take action, not words. With the economy in recession, now is a good time to get the word out while gas prices are lower. The message... “Get Your “KIDS” on Route 66!” by Ron Hart
