Choosing & Fitting a Last Lisa Sorrell$125W163, Sheridan Community College

Drawing original patterns need not be difficult. This workshop, intended for beginner or low-intermediate levels, will look at the components that make up designs for leather carving. It will start with the most basic elements and build on them to create your own original patterns. Pattern development will start with the line and flow of a pattern and build on this. Each step will be drawn on paper and then be repeated on leather. You will learn to draw your own flowers and leaves in a simple, logical manner by following a sequence of easy steps. As you learn this on paper you will apply it to leather. This will help to relate the pattern to the medium as well as improve your proficiency with your swivel knife and other tools. Patterns drawn on paper will be shaded with a pencil to learn the effects of shading. Various techniques can be used to give different effects to your leather carving. This can, over time, lead to developing your own original style. It all begins with the basics. Leather donated by Hermann Oak Leather Co.Materials to Bring: Pencil (soft lead), eraser, paper, swivel knife, strop, various stamping tools (beveler, shader, mule track, veiner, backgrounder), stamping surface and a mallet.

Saddle Fit-Up Al Gould$100Sheridan Room, Holiday Inn

This year’s workshop will approach the fit of the saddle tree to a horse from a different perspective than in previous years. It will look at the fit for both western and English saddles, their differences and their similarities. The focus will be on the weight bearing portion of the horse’s back and the distribution of pressure over the contact area of the tree bar to the horse. There will be a discussion of the anatomy of the horse: the skeletal and muscular structure, the skin, and the nerves and reflex points that lie under the skin. It will look at the effects of pressure as it is applied to the horse’s back. There will also be a discussion of the type and placement of the saddle rigging and how this can effect the bar pressure to the horse. The balance of the rider is another consideration that will be covered. A tree may be a good fit for the horse, but an improperly balanced rider can be the cause of a sore back for both horse and rider. The first 2-1/2 hours will be classroom discussion, followed by fitting various saddle trees to a live horse. Please dress for the outdoors.Materials to Bring: Notebook and pen/pencil. Cameras are welcome.
