Midwest Business Administration Association

HISTORY AND INTERESTING FACTSThe Midwest Business Administration (MBAA) was conceived at the1964 meeting of the American Economic Association in Chicago. TheMBAA’s inaugural meeting, in 1965, was planned by a committeeconsisting of Schuyler F. Otteson and L.L. Waters of Indiana Univer-sity and Charles Saunders and Sidney Feldman of the University ofKansas. Their immediate objective was to ensure that those whowanted to participate in the fledging disciplines of business adminis-tration would have a forum in which to do so. The first meeting washeld “on the occasion” of the Midwest Economic Association meetingin Kansas City, Missouri. About 200 attended that meeting and weretreated to eight sessions involving ten presenters. Topics includedeconomic development, marketing, quantitative decision making, transportation, and public utilities.

The MBAA has become successful beyond the wildest expectations ofits founders. Success was rooted in the philosophy espoused by them:“We are convinced that the organization should function as a coordi-nating body–a sort of holding company–that would not threaten theidentity or autonomy of organized groups in finance, accounting, marketing, etc. The MBAA should provide the forum for a singleunifying program in addition to any meetings offered by specializedgroups. The MBAA should offer a select number of speakers on topicsof equal interest and value to all conferees.” It is clear that from thestart the focus of the MBAA was on providing a multidisciplinaryexperience for the participants.

The MBAA experience is one of collegiality and fellowship, of renew-ing friendships and making new ones, and of continuing dialoguesabout teaching and research projects. It is the warm feeling associatedwith the annual return “home” to the Palmer House Hilton (since1978). It is the mixture of attendees from large and small, public andprivate, two and four year, and teaching and nonteaching institutions. It is Chicago! Chicago is a wonderful city with its many events, varieties of food, and excitement.

In 2003 eleven formal organizations make up the MBAA. The formalorganizations are: Academy of Finance, Marketing Management

7

Association, Midwest Academy of International Business, MidwestAcademy of Legal Studies in Business, Midwest Business Economics,Midwest Business and Health Administration, North AmericanManagement Society, North American Accounting Society, Opera-tions Management and Entrepreneurship Association, Society for CaseResearch, and the Society for the Advancement of InformationSystems. The officers of all organizations are listed near the back ofthis program, as are members of the MBAA Advisory Council, Presi-dents, Executive Directors, Exhibitors, and the Executive Board.

Primary registrations for the various MBAA organizations at the 2000,2001, and 2002 annual meetings were as follows:

2000 2001 2002Accounting ............................................................... 76 58 64Case Research ........................................................... 43 37 26Economics .................................................................. 37 27 46Finance and Insurance ............................................. 61 74 73Health Administration ............................................. 32 86 89Human Resources ..................................................... 22 24 17Information Systems .................................................. 32 43 47International Business .............................................. 30 37 37Legal Studies ............................................................ 63 50 33Management ............................................................. 38 32 33Marketing .................................................................. 148 118 129Operations Management and Entrepreneurship ..... 62 50 42MBAA ....................................................................... 44 28 19Total ........................................................................... 688 664 655

These registrations tell only part of the story as some participantssupport more than one organization through one or more secondaryregistrations. In 2000, there were 114 secondary registrants; in 2001,125; and in 2002, 108. The number of sessions in the program growseach year as more of them are scheduled on Wednesday afternoon, thefirst day of the conference.

Some ask whether the “Midwest” in MBAA is really indicative ofwhere participants reside? Since 1997, 47 states, plus foreign countries,
