GENERAL SCHOOL INFORMATIONWe are growing K – 5 liberal arts district school that serves the children and families of East Elmhurst, Queens. We are part of the District 30 family of schools. Students’ families should apply for kindergarten (in either the monolingual or dual language program). Once enrolled in kindergarten, students matriculate to the next grade (up to fifth grade). Siblings of currently enrolled students have priority for kindergarten seats. Each grade has 3 classes. Kindergarten classes have up to 25 students; grades 1 – 5 have up to 32 students.

MORNING DROP OFF The Astoria Boulevard doors to the school open at 7:30A.M. and a FREE healthy school breakfast is served from 7:30A.M. until 7:55A.M. The children are then picked up from the Cafeteria and brought up to their classroom by their respective teachers. The Astoria Boulevard door closes at 7:55A.M. Parents and children who arrive after the door closes will then have to come in through the door on 97th Street and will be considered late. Those parents and children who are late will need to go to the Main Office (Room 206) and get a late pass. Please be advised that parents are not allowed to go in the cafeteria during morning drop off.

SNACKThere is no designated snack time. Children will have the opportunity to eat both breakfast and lunch at school.

DISMISSALChildren will be dismissed at 2:20 pm into the school yard (between our school and St. Gabriel’s Church). Please wait for your child at the designated area for the class. Please wait for the classroom teacher and do not take your child off the class line.On days with extreme weather, families may pick up their child in the cafeteria at the designated area for the class. Please enter through Astoria Boulevard and exit with your child through the school yard.Should you need to pick up your child from school early, please send a note in your child’s backpack with the time you will be picking him/her up. You can pick up your child at that time in the main office (room 206).

LATE PICK-UPAll students must be picked up at the regular dismissal time. On rare occasions, if there is a delay in picking up a student, please call the main office to inform us. Students must be signed out in the main office before leaving the building.

BUS TRANSPORTATION & SAFETYChildren in kindergarten through 2nd grade who live at least a half-mile from school, and children in grades 3 through 5 who live at least one mile from school, are eligible for bus transportation. There are no exceptions.

If your child normally rides the school bus each day, expect the child to be placed on the bus at dismissal. If you pick your child up in person or make alternate arrangements on a given day, please make sure that the teacher is notified in writing at the beginning on the school day. No changes will be allowed to a child’s normal dismissal without having it in writing.

If your child rides a private bus and you make any changes in a given day, it is your responsibility to advise the private bus company. This includes the days that your child is absent from school.

BUS SAFETY

As always, our priorities are to ensure the health and safety of our children! It is IMPORTANT that parents of children who use the school bus review the following guidelines.

We ask your cooperation in discussing proper conduct on the bus with your child. Failure to adhere to these guidelines may result in a bus suspension. Continued failure to adhere to these guidelines may result in loss of the use of the bus permanently.

LOST & FOUNDPlease check the Lost and Found periodically for missing items. Please label your child’s clothing so that it would be easier to return. We will empty the Lost and Found once a month and items will be donated to charity. The Lost and Found is located in the back of the cafeteria.

ATTENDANCE & ABSENCESIt is important that a family member communicates with the school to report student absences. This helps keep us informed as well as helps ensure that our documentation is accurate and timely.  Keep in mind, along with the Department of Education closely monitors student absences and requires appropriate action in cases of excessive absence. We cannot take missed school days or lateness lightly, since regular attendance is critical in maintaining continuity in your child’s learning and is directly correlated with academic success.  One of the noticeable trends in our school is the significant dip in student attendance in the days prior to and after holidays. I strongly encourage you make sure your children are in attendance on those days as well. Teachers continue to provide solid instruction on those days and so it is important for all students to be in attendance. If a student is absent from class, he or she should do one of the following within two days of returning to school:1. Bring a note to the attendance office from a

parent or doctor stating the date(s) of the absence and the reason(s) for the absence.OR

2. Call the main office and give the date(s) of the absence and the reason(s) for the absence.

SCHOOL LUNCHEvery Single Family at East Elmhurst Community School Must Return School Lunch Forms ASAP!

Please note that the NYC Department of Education lunch forms which have been sent home MUST be filled out and returned by EVERY family as soon as possible, even if you are not signing up for free lunch.

If you are not applying for free lunch, you can leave the financial section of the form blank. The distribution and review of the “Application for Free and Reduced-price Meals” is required by the US Department of Agriculture in order for the DOE to receive federal Title I funding. If you have misplaced your copy of the form, please send a note in to your child’s teacher and we will make sure that you get a replacement form sent home to fill out right away. Thank you so much for complying with this DOE mandate as soon as possible.

School meals are priced as follows: breakfast – free; lunch - $1.75 per day.

We hope that more and more students will try out school breakfast and lunch. We think that you

will be pleasantly surprised by how healthy and delicious the meals served in the cafeteria really are! If you would like to see the school lunch menu it will be in the back of our school calendar every month. Students may also bring a lunch from home. This lunch should be healthy, such as a sandwich, rice, fruit, vegetables, or pasta. Please do not send only cookies, chips, or fruit snacks for your child’s lunch. They need nourishment to support their learning throughout the afternoon. If a child comes without a lunch or with a lunch bag that has only snacks, we will provide a school lunch (either hot lunch or a sandwich).Because of allergies and dietary restrictions, we ask children to NOT share their food during lunch. Please do not send food to share and speak with your child about eating only his/her own lunch.Proper behavior is expected from every child during the school day, including at lunchtime. We emphasize the following: remain seated, speak with indoor voices and keep your area clean. Children are responsible for cleaning up and dispensing of their own garbage.

EXTRA-CURRICULARSPlease check your child’s backpack for registration information for the very popular “Family Art” after school class. This weekly class is for students and their families. Students may not attend without a family member. The content is an extension of the work they do during their daytime art courses.

Students may participate in optional group or individual instrument courses offered on Saturdays by the Long Island City Academy for Music. Our school will subsidize a portion of the fee and provide the instruments. Students may also sign out an instrument to practice at home. Practice makes better – the more your child

practices and studies their instrument, the better they will be able to play.

The library is open to families daily. Students must be accompanied by a family member. Families may check out books, get help with homework (English or Spanish), use the computers, or listen to the read aloud of the day. All books must be returned by their due dates. Please speak with parent volunteers for help in finding the perfect books for your child!

STUDENT BEHAVIORAL CONTRACTStudents have a right to:

Be in a safe school, free from discrimination, harassment and bigotry;

Know what is correct behavior and what behaviors may result in disciplinary actions;

Counseling by staff about my behavior and how it affects my education and welfare in school;

Due process of law when I violate school regulations for which I may be suspended or removed from class;

Students agree to: Come to school on time with the

assistance of my parents, prepared to work;

Use courteous and polite language Participation in class/community meetings

to acknowledge a person’s thoughtfulness, assistance or courtesy;

Resolve conflicts peacefully and express my feelings in words;

Dress in a clean, neat and safe manner; Take care of my personal belongings and

respect other people’s belongings;

Tell my parents what I learned in school each day;

Complete my homework every day and show it to my parent(s)/guardian(s);

Follow the rules in the Disciplinary Code.Parent Section:As per the Discipline Code and Bill of Student Rights and Responsibilities, I understand the behavior that is required of my child. I understand that my participation in my child’s education will help him/her be successful in school. I have read this agreement and will carry out the following responsibilities to the best of my ability.

Encourage my child to be a respectful and peaceful member of the school community.

Discuss the Disciplinary Code and the Bill of Rights and Responsibilities with my child.

Participate in parent conferences, class programs and other activities in which my child is involved.

Assure that my child will arrive at school on time everyday.

Provide a quiet place for my child to do his/her homework.

Spend at least 15 minutes per day reading with my child.

Listen to my child retelling of his/her school day experiences.

Provide the school with current telephone numbers and emergency contact information.

Alert the school if there are any significant changes in child’s health or well being that affects his/her ability to perform in school.

SLEEPChildren should get at least 8 hours of sleep every night. It is very difficult for children to learn and be at their best when tired. Please set up a routine for your child to do homework, play, have dinner, spend time with

family, take a bath, read, and go to bed by 9 pm each night.

PROHIBITED ITEMSStudents may not possess the following items on school property or at school events without the explicit permission of a teacher or administrator:

Cell phones, music players, cameras, television sets, electronic items of distraction and toys (including dolls, action figures, cars, and games)

These items can be a great distraction to children’s learning. All prohibited items will be taken and held by the classroom teacher or principal and returned to the parent at the end of the school day.

PARENT-TEACHER CONFERENCES/REPORT CARDSReport cards are distributed three times a year: November, March and June. Parents will have the opportunity to discuss their child’s progress at the November and March Parent/Teacher Conferences.

Parent Teacher Conferences are held twice per school year. The dates and times of these conferences will be announced by the school as the date nears. There will be two sessions per conference, one afternoon session and one evening session to accommodate parents with conflicting schedules. Teachers will reach out and make appointments with parents on these dates.

HAVING A PROBLEM OR QUESTIONHere is the appropriate chain of command:

1) Speak to your child’s teacher. Write a note detailing the problem or request an appointment to discuss the problem

2) Still not satisfied? Speak to the Parent Coordinator or Principal. Again, write a note or call the office for appointment. We’re here to help!

APPOINTMENTS WITH STAFFParents are encouraged to communicate with staff on a regular basis. If you wish to meet with a teacher, or service provider, please request an appointment in writing or by calling the main office. Parents may send notes in to the classroom teacher or leave a message for staff members with the school secretary or parent coordinator. It is important to adhere to this request in order to minimize the unnecessary interruption of classroom instruction and to enable the scheduling of sufficient time for your discussion. Scheduled conferences will be held in November and March.

HOMEWORK A homework packet will be sent home each Monday. The homework packet must be completed and returned on the following Monday, including the daily reading log. Homework serves to reinforce the concepts learned in school so make sure you help your child with homework everyday. Please assist your child but do not do the work for him/her. We also encourage you to read with your child in whatever language you prefer. Children in the dual language program will have to complete homework in both English and Spanish.

UNIFORM POLICYOur families believe that wearing a school uniform encourages a sense of pride in school and creates a sense of equity. We hope that all parents/guardians are aware of the advantages of the school uniform and that all parents/guardians will do their best to support this dress code for the benefit of all the pupils in our school. Please be advised that the uniform is:AN ORANGE POLO SHIRT (EITHER LONG OR SHORT SLEEVE) WITH GRAY SLACKS, SKIRT, OR JUMPER. FLIP FLOPS AND SANDALS THAT CAN FALL OFF EASILY ARE NOT PREMITTED, AS THEY ARE UNSAFE FOR YOUR CHILD. SNEAKERS OR RUBBER SOLED SHOES ARE RECOMMENDED.Students are required to wear the uniform Monday through Thursday. Friday is “Freedom Friday” and uniform is optional. If you need to purchase a uniform feel free to call the main office.

EMERGENCY CARDSPlease be sure to accurately and completely fill out the Emergency Cards and return them with your child to the school. Please list multiple numbers for emergency contact information. These are confidential student records and will not be released to anyone other than staff. List any adult (18 years and older) that your child can be dismissed to. If a person is not listed on the Emergency Card, the child will not be released to them. Should you have a court order please submit a copy with the blue card. Report any changes to contact information as soon as

possible. It is very important to keep this information up to date.

HEALTH AND IMMUNIZATIONIn accordance with the New York State Public Health Law, all students attending New York City Public Schools must be immunized against the following diseases: diphtheria, pertussis, tetanus, polio, measles, mumps, rubella, varicella, Hepatitis B and Haemophilus influenza type B (Hib).Studies have shown that a student who has not been vaccinated is more likely to contract a vaccine preventable disease. Since no vaccine is 100% effective, some children who have been vaccinated may also be infected through contact with a child who has not been immunized. Schools with students who have not been immunized are much more likely to suffer and outbreak of one of these illnesses. In the event that a case of a vaccine preventable disease occurs in your child’s school and your child has not obtained the required immunization, the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene has the right to require that your child be excluded from school for at least one incubation period after the onset of the last case. MEDICATION Epinephrine (Epi-Pen)About 1% of students are at risk of severe (life threatening) allergic reaction to foods (especially tree nuts) and insect stings. Such reactions are best treated with injectable epinephrine (in the form of an Epi-Pen). The DOHMH stocks Epi-pen in its medical rooms for emergency administration by its staff. The OSH will train teachers, paraprofessionals assigned to work with

students with severe allergies, and other staff in the use of the Epi-pen on request.Other MedicationMedication may be administered in school if it is needed to permit the student to participate in his/her educational program. A health care provider (physician, nurse practitioner, or physician assistant with physician signoff) licensed to prescribe in New York, New Jersey, or Connecticut must complete a Medication Administration Form (MAF), prescribing the medications to be administered during the school day. This form may be obtained by parents at their child’s schools or on the DOE website. Any changes to the MAF must be in writing and signed by a licensed health care provider. A new MAF must be supplied at the start of the school year.All medications must be hand-delivered to the school in the original pharmacy container. The school nurse will store the medication in a locked cabinet or refrigerator. The nurse or school designee will maintain a medication log (and other documentation as indicated) for each student approved to receive medication in school.

SCHOOL SAFETYParents are to enter and exit by the Main Door on 97th only. Families must present their photo ID and sign in with our Safety Agent. Strollers are not permitted beyond the lobby at 97th Street. As a courtesy we have created a small “stroller parking lot” next to the safety desk in the main lobby. During school hours, parent-teacher conferences, and Tuesday parent meetings, all strollers must be folded up and parked there. If you are picking up your child in the yard but want to meet with the teacher, and you have a stroller, please kindly walk around to our 97th street entrance. If the door is closed, please ring the bell and we will let you in. For PTA events, we welcome you to have strollers in the multipurpose room, but they must be kept at your side or parked along the back blue wall, so they are not

blocking any exits. Our school has a video monitoring security system for the safety of students and staff. Your cooperation is greatly appreciated.

The safety of our students is of utmost concern. Parents are not permitted to escort their child into the school building. School staff and monitors will direct the students at the start and end of the day. Parents are NOT permitted to go to their child’s classroom unless they have previously scheduled an appointment to do so with the teacher in advance.

FIRE DRILLSFire drills are held throughout the school year to prepare students and staff for an emergency situation. Each year the school should conduct at least 8 fire drills. During a fire drill it is expected that all students remain quiet and follow the directives of the teacher. All students are to quickly and quietly exit the building. Please stress to your child the importance of these rules and review them at home.

LOCKDOWN DRILLSLockdown drills are held throughout the school year as part of the General Response Protocol (GRP). Each year the school will conduct at least 2 lockdown drills. These drills help to prepare students and staff for a threat within the school building. During a lockdown drill all students and staff are required to be in a locked location and remain quiet and out of the “line of vision”. Advanced notice of these drills is given to parents so that you can speak with your child at home and stress the importance of these drills.

PARENT INVOLVEMENTAt East Elmhurst Community School we welcome all parents who want to get involved in their child’s education. If you want to find out how you can volunteer your time you can always contact Parent Coordinator Karolhyn Obando. Parent Teacher Association (PTA)As a parent/guardian of a child at East Elmhurst Community School you are automatically a part of the PTA. We encourage you to take an active role in the PTA by volunteering your talents and time any way you can. Our PTA has an active board that helps to raise funds for our school, support school wide initiatives and positively contribute to the overall well being of our community. PTA general meetings are held monthly and translation will be available at all meetings. If you have any questions of would like to become more involved with the PTA please feel free to contact them at the school.Learning LeadersLearning Leaders’ mission is to help New York City public school students succeed by training volunteers to provide individualized instructional support and other school-based support, and by empowering parents to foster their children’s educational development. We love having our families take an active and collaborative role in their child’s education. We learn so much from each of you! Family volunteers bridge the space between home and school and we come to rely on your support each day. As such, we have guidelines to support the consistency of this initiative. Each volunteer opportunity has a defined set of expectations. All volunteers must follow the set schedule and be willing to fully participate in the activity. Trainings will be provided during the school year. In order to continue, volunteers should not miss more than 5 days. If you are unable to make it, please phone the office to let us know.

School Leadership Team (SLT)School Leadership Teams (SLT’s) are vehicles for developing school-based educational policies, and ensuring that resources are aligned to implement those policies. SLTs assist in the evaluation and assessment of a school’s educational programs and their effects on student achievement. An SLT is responsible for developing a school’s Comprehensive Educational Plan (CEP). The SLT consists of the principal, 6 teachers and 7 parent members. The parent members are chosen at random. SLT meets once a month during the school year on the first Monday of the month.

SNOW DAYSIn the case of a day with Citywide emergency conditions or a major storm day the Chancellor will make an announcement or all public schools

in the city on whether to close schools or delay their opening. This announcement is made in consultation with other City officials. All authorized delayed openings will result in the regular starting time being two hours later. By 6:00a.m. the decision is announced on the 311 information line, on the Department of Education website home page (which can be accessed at http://schools.nyc.gov) and on the following radio stations in the city:WINS(1010AM), WCBS(880AM), WABC(770AM), WLIB(1190AM), WADO(1280AM), WBLS(107.5FM), WNYE(91.5FM)You can also check the following television stations:WCBS (Channel 2), WNBC (Channel 4), WNYW (Fox Channel 5), WABC (Channel 7), WNYE (Channel 25), Univision (Channel 41) and “NY1” (Channel 1 on cable television).When there is an authorized citywide school closing or delayed school opening, the following will be cancelled unless the Chancellor makes an announcement to the contrary: all field trips, all after school programs (including Community Based Organization sites). It is expected that when there is a delayed opening, students will be in school until their regular dismissal time. However, if citywide emergency conditions or a storm worsens, the Chancellor may have to announce an early dismissal. The Chancellor will notify bus services of the earlier dismissal schedule.

BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONSWe welcome families to celebrate their child’s birthday in their classroom. Celebrations must be set up in advance with the classroom teacher. Birthday celebrations are important in the lives and cultures of many of our school community members. This is an awesome opportunity to not only learn about and tolerate the cultures of

FIELD TRIPSField trips within our school district and to nearby points of interest are scheduled by classroom teachers. Trips are not privileges or rewards for good behavior. They are part of the classroom curriculum and introduce students to the resources in the community. Parents will receive notice of field trips in advance of the trip date and will be asked to sign a field trip permission form for each trip their child attends. Please notify the classroom teacher if you are interested in chaperoning. We love having families join us on our excursions. Unfortunately, we cannot permit younger siblings to be part of class trips. A small amount of money may be requested from each student to defray the cost. Permission slips and money must be given to the teacher before the day of the trip.

WALKING FIELD TRIPSOur students will participate in many walking field trips throughout the school year. Walking field trips are defined as places of educational relevance within walking distance from our school building. Our students will walk to the Queens Public Library, around the school block, and to other neighborhood sites of interest and relevance to our curriculum.Whenever possible, the individual teachers will give prior notice of any upcoming walking field

trips. On occasion, you may be asked to accompany your child’s class on a walking field trip.

RECESSAccording to the Health Department recommendations and the current New York City Department of Education policy, children benefit from vigorous exercise and should be given the opportunity to play outside. The Health Department encourages outdoor play during winter days. We also know that, as a result of vigorous play, our children are better able to focus and learn during the afternoon.

NYC Department of Education policy states, “Outdoor play is permitted regardless of temperature so long as weather conditions are appropriate.” In our community, unless it is snowing, raining, or there is ice on the playground, and if it is not unreasonably cold, children will be going outside for recess. Please dress your child to play outside for the cold weather with a heavy coat, hat, scarf, and mittens.

RELATED SERVICESBased upon a student’s needs and the extent to which those needs affect educational performance, the IEP Team may recommend that related services be provided. Related services are defined as “developmental, corrective and other support services” required to assist a student to benefit from instruction. They are intended to assist a student in meeting the objectives of his or her instructional program, to be involved in the general education curriculum, to experience success in his or her classroom setting and to be educated with their peers. When Related Services

are provided to students whose primary program is general education they are considered a supplementary aid and service. Related Services may also be a support of students in special classes.

East Elmhurst Community School strives to service all children with special needs and we provide the following Related Services:

counseling; occupational therapy (OT); physical therapy (PT); speech/language therapy and other support services.

Counseling

The purpose and focus of the counseling provided is determined by an evaluation of the student’s needs and the extent to which they interfere with educational performance. Counseling is an interpersonal activity which addresses specific school related counseling goals in order to enable students to succeed in school. It is designed to improve students’ social and emotional school functioning in the areas of appropriate school behavior and discipline, social skills, self-control, conflict resolution, problem solving skills, self-esteem, decision-making skills and vocational and transition planning. Counseling may be provided in combination with the development of an individual behavior intervention plan.

Counseling is provided by licensed and/or certified school guidance counselors, school social workers and/or school psychologists.

Occupational Therapy (OT)

Occupational Therapy (OT) emphasizes independence in activities of daily living, skill acquisition, and school participation in various settings including the classroom, cafeteria, bathroom, and playground. Occupational Therapy is designed to maintain, improve or restore function of students in all educationally related activities including neuromusculoskeletal function, motor function, sensory and perceptual function, cognitive function, and psychological function. Occupational Therapy maintains and promotes function through the use of purposeful activities and development of compensatory strategies that enhance school performance. Occupational Therapy provides and maintains adaptive equipment and assistive technology.

Occupational Therapy may be recommended for a student whose physical needs and/or learning problems requires such services and/or impedes access to his/her educational program. These students may demonstrate skills that are below expectations commensurate with the student’s total profile including cognitive development which adversely affects school performance. A physician’s referral is required for a student to receive OT and OT is provided by state licensed Occupational Therapists.

Physical Therapy (PT)

Physical Therapy emphasizes physical function and independence in various settings including the classroom, gym, staircase, playground, and transitions between settings. PT uses manual/handling techniques, exercise and sensory processing activities to maintain, improve or restore function including gross motor development, neuromotor status, motor planning, and negotiating the environment. PT also promotes function by adapting the environment, providing and maintaining seating, positioning, assistive technology and mobility equipment and by monitoring and managing orthoses and prostheses. PT may be recommended for a student whose physical needs require such services and/or impede access to their educational program. These students may demonstrate skills that are below expectations commensurate with the student’s total profile including cognitive development, which adversely affects school performance. A physician’s referral is required for a student to receive PT and PT is provided by a state licensed Physical Therapist.

Speech/Language Therapy

Speech/Language Therapy is designed to address deficits in a student’s auditory processing, articulation/phonological skills, comprehension and use of semantics, syntax, pragmatics, voice production and fluency. Speech/Language Therapy may be recommended for a student with a communication problem, including problems of language comprehension and expressive language which adversely affect school performance. In addition, it may be recommended for students with speech production skills whose speech is unintelligible or not commensurate with the student’s total profile, including cognitive

development which adversely affects his or her educational performance. Students who function below a six month old cognitive level may not be ready for speech/language therapy as a related service but rather should receive sensory or language stimulation as part of their primary program.

Other Support Services

Some students may require “Other Support Services” of a paraprofessional either in the general education classroom or in a special class to address specific management needs related to behavior, health, communication or vision needs. The paraprofessional provides assistance and support to the student during the instructional period(s) as described in the IEP and as directed by teachers.

COMMUNICATIONHere at East Elmhurst Community School we want all parents to feel like they have a direct line to the school. We have several ways with which you can keep an open line of communication with the school.

Homework Folder- Please check your child’s backpack and homework folder daily for communication from school. Teachers will send home event flyers, student work, and results of student assessments (such as reading levels). You may also send communication with the teacher in this folder. Please place any money in an envelope with your child’s name and the teacher’s name. Place the envelope in the homework folder. Teachers check these folders each day. Please do not hand money to staff members during arrival/dismissal. Placing it in the homework folder is the best way to ensure it will arrive safely to the teacher.

Newsletter-The East Elmhurst Community School Newsletter goes out at the beginning of each month. It has fun articles and picture collages of the activities that took place during

the month. It also contains important reminders of upcoming events.

School Calendar- The school calendar goes out on the first of every month. It contains important reminders of upcoming events as well as the school lunch menu on the back.

Breakfast with the Principal- Once a month, our school principal Ms. Rachel Staroba will hold a breakfast where parents can come and talk directly about any questions or concerns that they might have.

Open School- Each fall, families are invited to visit their child’s classroom to see instruction. Please check the School Calendar for specific dates and times for your child’s teacher.

Meetings with the Teacher- Each Tuesday, teachers offer a space for parents to visit the classroom, learn more about the current units of study, check on their child’s progress, and discuss ways to support your child at home. Every Tuesday from 2:30pm-3:30pm you can visit your child’s teacher and you don’t need an appointment to come in.

CURRICULUMAt East Elmhurst Community School, we provide rigorous, arts-infused instruction that prepares students for high performing middle schools and to be independent critical thinkers throughout all aspects of their lives.

Reading- All children (beginning in December for kindergarten) have a book baggie filled with books at his/her independent reading level. The books must be returned to school each morning and go home each afternoon. Children read

independently each day during the Readers Workshop and should read each evening at home. Early childhood students (K – 2) also should practice their Magic Words each night. Your children will learn reading skills in both fiction and non-fiction through teacher modeling, shared reading, reading groups, and phonics instruction. Children also read a new poem each week. Those poems are send home in a Shared Reading Notebook and should be rehearsed daily. Children have Readers Workshop each day.

Writing- Our motto is “Writers never stop writing!” Children are expected to draw first, label their drawings, write sentences, write paragraphs and, finally, to write essays/narratives. Children will also write across multiple genres to expand their repertoire (letters, poetry, persuasive, informational, small moments, etc.). Children use their knowledge of phonics to improve their spelling skills. We teach your child the rules of spelling in English and Spanish (for dual classes). Children should not be memorizing word lists. The only words your child should memorize are the Dolch Magic Words (sent home nightly in the Book Baggies). Children have Writers Workshop each day.

Math- Children learn by doing. In mathematics, teachers continuously are refining the curriculum to challenge your child to solve real life problems. Please attend as many of the monthly roundtables as possible to stay acquainted with the “new math” strategies. Children should still memorize their basic facts (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division) by the fourth grade to develop fluency with mathematical problem solving. Children study mathematics 6 times per week.

Lyric Study- To promote oral language and explicitly learn idiomatic language, as well as culture and history of music, students study a song each week. They learn about the artist/composer, develop fluency in reading the lyrics, and study the meaning behind the words. They build vocabulary and expand their liberal arts knowledge.

Visual Thinking Strategies- Students also study 2 paintings each week around a common theme. Students discuss their observations and back up their ideas with evidence from the painting.

Please check your child’s homework packet and the school website to discuss the paintings with your child at home.

Social Studies- Students study social studies 3 times per week. They study social studies concepts through the Forever Factors. The Forever Factors are the 5 elements that are present in any established, on-going social group, from a classroom or a school up to a city or a country. They are (1) geography / climate; (2) politics (who has power and gets to make the rules/laws); (3) economics (how humans' basic needs for shelter and food are met); (4) science / technology; and (5) culture (the traditions, practices and beliefs that shape people's everyday lives, including traditional clothing and houses, food, holidays, language, music, dance, and religion). Together, the Forever Factors provide a lens through which we can study any human society. Science- Students study science with their classroom teacher twice a week. We use a program called Sangari Active Science. Active Science is an investigation-centered, K-5 science program. It provides experiences, experiments, discussions, and challenges that encourage students to develop the problem solving skills that will enable them to participate and interact in the scientific and technological environment of the modern world. Scientific knowledge is increasing rapidly in all fields. Active Science prepares future citizens of the world to be prepared to ask and answer why, as well as to enable them to apply scientific information in order to solve new and complex problems.

Music- Students receive music class once per week. Kindergarten studies Dalcroze Eurhythmics, Dalcroze Eurhythmics teaches concepts of rhythm, structure, and musical expression using movement. It focuses on allowing the student to gain physical awareness and the experience of music through training that takes place through all of the senses, particularly kinesthetic. First graders deepen their understanding of music through study of musical theory and chorus. Both classes are taught by teaching musicians from the Long Island City Academy for Music.

Technology- Students work with a technology teacher once per week. They learn not only the basics of using computers, but how use technology with a purpose; students use iPads to create educational videos, to update our school website, to research areas of interest, to communicate with others, and as a platform for their voice.

Town Hall- Students meet as a school community once per week for many purposes. Students celebrate the arts, share their learning, reflect on the week’s lyric and painting studies, and discuss school rules and core values. Families also visit to share their knowledge and experiences with the community. We have an open invitation for our families. If you would like to present on a topic (your work, your studies, your country, a holiday, your hobby, etc.), please contact the main office and leave a message for Ms. Zappala or Ms. Cullaj (who coordinate Town Hall) who will set up a date for your presentation.

READING LEVELSReading provides the pathway to access of information and supports children’s writing.

We use a balanced literacy approach, where children read small texts at their independent reading level. Those levels are labeled with letters using a system called “Fountas and Pinnell.”

In kindergarten, children begin retelling “star books,” or books that the teacher has read aloud with stories that the children know very well. Children use the pictures to retell the story. They also learn “concepts of print.” This means that they can distinguish between text and pictures. They should also know the front and back of the book and how to find the author and illustrator’s name.

By January of kindergarten, most children are reading level A books or higher. These texts have repeating patterns. The children are taught to point to each word as they read and use the

initial letter plus the picture to figure out new words.

As our readers grow, they master their Magic Words and learn how to sound out new words by “tapping” them out, using what they learned from Fundations and Estrellita phonics programs.

As the books grow in level (letter), there are more words and more sentences on each page.

We carefully monitor your child’s reading level to support their development. In the dual classes, we monitor in both languages. We believe each child has his/her own journey as a reader and we work with each family to support each child’s individual journey. Below are the benchmarks that children should strive for to remain on grade level. Second grade is a pivotal year; as students move from levels L to M, the reading shifts from learning to read, to reading to learn.

DUAL LANGUAGEEntry into a dual language program is a multi-year commitment involving the family as well as

the student. Students learn to become multi-cultural, bilingual and bi-literate. Dual language is an option for interested families and for some of our students. Participation in the program is a six year commitment and the decision should be discussed with the principal and/or classroom teacher. We want all of our students to be in a space where they can experience the greatest possible success.

What is a Dual Language Program (DLP)?

A bilingual program where students learn in two languages.

An approach to instruction for Spanish-speaking students to increase English proficiency and English-speaking students to increase Spanish proficiency. 

Students learning in one classroom, with 50% of the instruction in Spanish and 50% in English.

An opportunity for students to use home language to master a second language and new content (referred to as “translanguaging.”)

What are the goals for students in the DLP?

How does instruction differ in a DLP?

Students in the DLP receive the same content-area instruction and follow the same units of study in all subjects as do other classes in our school. 

We follow a 50%/50% model in grades K -2, where students have one classroom teacher for all core subjects.  Grades 3 and above follow a side-by-side model, with students switching between the "English" and "Spanish" classrooms

alternate days, according to a schedule.  In all cases, half the daily instructional time is conducted in English, half in Spanish. 

Literacy and Social Studies are taught in Spanish and in English.

Math and Science are taught in English and Spanish

No instructional content is repeated in translation.

Specialty subjects (Art and Music) are taught in English by our specialty teachers. Music teachers introduce Spanish songs and composers.

ResearchResearch has shown that bilinguals tend to be more creative, more flexible, are better able to multi-task and are significantly less likely to develop Alzheimer’s disease in their later years. Children in dual language programs also outperform their monolingual peers on standardized tests and are in a position for more career opportunities after university. New York State now awards high school graduates with 13 years of bilingual education a “seal of bilingualism,” which is a higher honor that supports a stronger application for university. We are honored to partner with Dr. Patricia Velasco from CUNY Queens College. A nationally known expert on bilingual education and bilingualism, we collaborate with her department to ensure your children receive the highest caliber of bilingual education with access to the latest in research and best practices.

FUNDATIONSFundations is a research-based program used to instruct students in word study in grades kindergarten through third grade as part of our balanced literacy approach to reading (and writing) instruction. It serves as a prevention program to help ensure reading and spelling success. Teachers incorporate a daily Fundations lesson into their literacy instruction block. Fundations lessons focus on carefully sequenced skills that include print knowledge, alphabet

awareness, phonological awareness, phonemic awareness, decoding, vocabulary, fluency, and spelling. Critical thinking, speaking and listening skills are practiced during Storytime activities.

ESTRELLITAEstrellita is a supplementary, accelerated, beginning Spanish reading program for Pre-K through 1st grade students in Bilingual and Dual Language classrooms. Based on scientific learning and reading principles, Estrellita provides multisensory, in depth instruction in phonemic awareness, phonics and fluency. Because it was designed to meet the needs of children at all skill levels, layers of differentiated instruction are built into the program.

ENTREGA EN LA MAÑANALas puertas de Astoria Boulevard se abrirán a las 7:30a.m. y un desayuno escolar sano GRATUITO se sirve desde las 7:30a.m. hasta las 7:50a.m. Los niños serán recogidos de la Cafetería y traídos hasta su aula por sus profesores respectivos. Vaciaremos la caja de objetos desaparecidos una vez al mes y los artículos serán donados a obras de caridad. La caja de objetos desparecidos se encuentra en la parte trasera de la cafetería.

ASISTENCIA & AUSENCIASEs importante que un miembro de familia se comunique con la escuela para reporar ausencias estudiantiles. Esto ayuda a mantenernos informados así como ayuda a asegurar que nuestra documentación sea precisa.

Tenga presente, el Departamento de Educación estrictamente supervisa ausencias estudiantiles y requiere la acción apropiada en casos de ausencia excesiva. No podemos tomar ausencias o retrasos ligeramente, ya que la asistencia regular es importante en el mantenimiento de la continuidad en el aprendizaje de su hijo y directamente se correlaciona con el aprovechamiento académico.

Esta clase semanal es para los estudiantes y sus familias. Los estudiantes no pueden asistir sin un miembro de la familia. El contenido es una extensión del trabajo que hacen durante el día durante la clase de arte.

Los alumnos podrán participar en clases de música en grupo o individualmente los sábados que son dados por la Academia de Música de Long Island City. Nuestra escuela cubrirá una parte de la tarifa y proporcionará los instrumentos. Los estudiantes también pueden llevar prestado un instrumento para practicar en casa. La práctica hace al maestro - mientra más su hijo práctica y estudia su instrumento, mejor podrá tocar.

La biblioteca está abierta para las familias cada día. Los estudiantes deben ser acompañados por un miembro de la familia. DORMIRLos niños deben tener por lo menos 8 horas de sueño cada noche. Es muy difícil para los niños aprender y estar en su mejor momento cuando estaban cansados. CONFERENCIAS DE PADRES Y MAESTROS/REPORTESLos Reportes de Progreso son distribuidos tres veces por año escolar en Noviembre, Marzo y Junio. Los padres tendran oportunidad para hablar sobre el progreso de sus hijos/as durante las conferencias de Noviembre y Marzo.Las conferencias de padres y maestros se llevaran a cabo dos veces por año escolar. Las fechas y las horas de estas conferencias serán anunciadas por la escuela cuando la fecha se acerca. Habrá dos períodos de sesiones por conferencia, una sesión de la tarde y una sesión de noche para acomodar horarios conflictivos con los padres. Los profesores se pondrán en contacto y concertar citas con los padres en estas fechas.

CITAS CON EL PERSONALAnimamos a los padres a que se comuniquen con nuestro personal en una base regular. Si desea reunirse con un profesor o proveedor de servicios, por favor solicite una cita por escrito. Los padres pueden enviar notas al profesor de su hijo con su hijo o dejar notas para nuestro personal con la secretaria escolar o coordinadora de padres. Es importante seguir esta solicitud con el fin de minimizar la interrupción innecesaria de la instrucción del aula y permitir la programación de tiempo suficiente para su discusión. TARJETAS DE EMERGENCIAPor favor asegúrese de llenar completamente las tarjetas de emergencia y devolverlas con su hijo a la escuela. Por favor escriba varios números en caso de emergencia. SALUD Y IMMUNIZACIÓNConforme a la ley de salud pública del estado de Nueva York, todos los estudiantes que asisten a las escuelas públicas de la ciudad de Nueva York deben ser vacunados contra las siguientes enfermedades: difteria, tos ferina, tétanos, poliomielitis, sarampión, paperas, rubéola, varicela, Hepatitis B y Haemophilus influenza tipo B(Hib).Estudios demuestran que un estudiante que no ha sido vacunado tiene más probabilidad de contraer una enfermedad prevenible con vacunas. Puesto que ninguna vacuna es 100% efectiva, algunos niños que han sido vacunados pueden también pinfectarse a través del contacto con un niño que no ha sido vacunado. Las escuelas con alumnos que no han sido inmunizados son mucho más propensos a sufrir un brote de una de estas enfermedades. En caso de que una enfermedad prevenible se produce en la escuela de su hijo y su hijo no ha obtenido la inmunización, el Departamento de Salud e Higiene Mental tiene derecho a exigir que su hijo sea excluido de la escuela por lo menos durante un período de incubación después de la aparición del último caso. MEDICAMENTOS Epinephrine (Epi-Pen)Alrededor del 1% de los estudiantes corren el riesgo de graves (potencialmente mortales) reacciónes alérgicas a los alimentos (especialmente nueces) y a las picaduras de insectos. Tales reacciones son mejor tratadas con epinefrina inyectable (en la forma de un Epi-Pen). El DOHMH tiene Epi-pen en sus salas médicas para administración de urgencia por su personal. La OSH capacitará a maestros, paraprofesionales asignados para trabajar con estudiantes con alergias severas y otros miembros del personal en

el uso del Epi-Pen bajo petición.Otros medicamentos Medicamentos pueden ser administrados en la escuela si es necesario para permitir al estudiante participar en su programa educativo. Un proveedor de cuidado de la salud (médico, enfermera o asistente médico con la firma del médico) con licencia para prescribir en Nueva York, Nueva Jersey o Connecticut debe completar un Formulario de Administración de Medicación (MAF), recetando a los medicamentos que se deben administrar durante el día escolar. Este formulario puede obtenerse por los padres en las escuelas de sus hijos o en el sitio web DOE. Cualquier cambio en el MAF debe ser por escrito y firmado por un médico con licencia. Un nuevo MAF debe suministrarse al inicio del año escolar.Todos los medicamentos deben ser entregados a la escuela en el envase original de la farmacia. La enfermera de la escuela almacenará el medicamento en un gabinete cerrado o refrigerador. SEGURIDAD ESCOLARLos padres deben entrar y salir por la Puerta Principal en la 97 calle. Las familias deben presentar su identificación con foto y firmar con nuestro agente de seguridad. No se permiten cochecitos más allá de la zona designada por la puerta de la 97 calle. Como cortesía hemos creado un pequeño "estacionamiento para coches de bebé" junto al mostrador de seguridad en el vestíbulo principal. Durante horas escolares, conferencias con los maestros y las reuniones de padres todos los martes, todos los coches deben ser doblados y estacionados allí. Si recogen a su hijo en el patio pero quiere reunirse con el maestro, y tiene un cochecito, por favor entre por nuestra entrada en 97th street. Si la puerta está cerrada, por favor, toque el timbre y le dejaremos entrar. Durante los eventos de PTA, pueden traer los coches al salón multiusos, pero deben

mantenerse a su lado o estacionados a lo largo de la pared azul de atrás, de tal manera de que no bloqueen las salidas. Nuestra escuela tiene un sistema de seguridad de vídeo vigilancia por la seguridad de los estudiantes y el personal. Su cooperación es muy apreciada. La seguridad de nuestros estudiantes es de suma preocupación. A los padres no se les permite acompañar a sus hijos dentro de la escuela. Monitores y personal de la Escuela, están encargados de dirigir a los estudiantes durante el inicio y al final del día. A los padres NO se les permite ir al salón de su hijo/a a menos que previamente haya programado una cita para hacerlo con la maestra.

SIMULACROS DE INCENDIOSe llevan a cabo simulacros de incendio durante el año escolar para preparar a los estudiantes y el personal para una situación de emergencia. Cada año la escuela debe realizar por lo menos 8 simulacros de incendio. Durante un simulacro de incendio se espera que todos los estudiantes permanezcan tranquilos y sigan las directivas del maestro. Todos los estudiantes deben de caminar en forma rápida y silenciosamente al salir del edificio. Por favor hable con su hijo sobre la importancia de estas normas y repase estas normas con su hijo/a en casa.

PRACTICA DE AISLAMIENTO EN CASO DE EMERGENCIAPracticas de aislamiento se llevan a cabo durante el año escolar como parte de nuestro Protocolo de Respuesta General (GRP). Cada año la escuela debe realizar por lo menos 2 practicas de aislamiento. Estas practicas ayudan a preparar estudiantes y el personal en caso de emergencia de amenaza en el edificio de la escuela. Durante una practica de aislamiento todos los estudiantes y el personal deben de estar en un lugar cerrado y permanecer tranquilo y fuera de la "línea de visión". Notificación de estos ejercicios es dada a

los padres para que usted pueda hablar con su hijo en casa sobre la importancia de estas practicas.

PARTICIPACIÓN DE LOS PADRESEn East Elmhurst Community School damos la bienvenida a todos los padres que quieran involucrarse en la educación de sus hijos. Nos encanta que nuestras familias tengan un papel activo y colaborativo en la educación de sus hijos. Hemos aprendido mucho de cada uno de ustedes. Los voluntarios son el puente entre el hogar y la escuela y nos ayudan con su apoyo cada día. En este sentido, hemos creado guías para apoyar la coherencia de esta iniciativa. Cada oportunidad de voluntariado tiene definido un conjunto de expectativas. Todos los voluntarios deben seguir el horario establecido y estar dispuestos a participar plenamente en la actividad. Los cursos se ofrecen durante el año escolar. A fin de continuar, los voluntarios no deben perder más de 5 días. celebraciones deberán ser coordinadas por adelantado con el maestro.Las celebraciones de cumpleaños son importantes en la vida y las culturas de muchos de nuestros miembros de la comunidad escolar. Esta es una oportunidad increíble para no sólo conocer y tolerar las culturas de los demás, sino para comprenderlas verdaderamente.Algunas familias tienen otras fiestas o eventos de vida que celebran y damos la bienvenida a todos a compartir con nuestra comunidad. Por favor coordine con el maestro para establecer una fecha, de 1:50pm – 2:20pm, para visitar el salón de su hijo.

PASEOSPaseos dentro de nuestro distrito escolar y a puntos de interés cercanos serán programados por los maestros. Estos paseos están diseñados para complementar el currículo del aula y para introducir a los alumnos a los recursos en la comunidad. Los padres recibirán notificación del paseo antes de la fecha del paseo y se pedirá que firme un formulario de permiso para cada viaje al cual su hijo/a asista. Una pequeña cantidad de dinero puede solicitarse de cada estudiante para ayudar con el costo. Permisos y dinero deben prestarse a la maestra antes del día del paseo.

PERMISO DE EXCURSIÓNES A PIENuestros alumnos participarán en muchas excursiones a pie a lo largo del año escolar. Estas excursiones se llevaran a cabo en lugares de relevancia educativa a poca distancia de nuestro edificio escolar. Nuestros estudiantes caminarán a la biblioteca pública de Queens, alrededor de la cuadra de la escuela y a otros sitios de interés y relevancia para nuestro plan de estudios.Siempre que sea posible, los maestros les darán previo aviso cuando van a tener estas excursiones a pie. RECREOSegún las recomendaciones del Departamento de Salud y lo póliza del Departamento de Educación del Estado de Nueva York, los niños se benefician de ejercicio vigoroso y deben tener la oportunidad de jugar afuera. El Departamento de Salud incentiva el juego al aire libre durante días de invierno. Nosotros también sabemos que, como resultado de juego vigoroso, nuestros niños están en mejores condiciones para concentrarse y aprender durante la tarde.

SERVICIOS RELACIONADOSBasado en las necesidades del estudiante y la medida en que esas necesidades afectan desempeño educativo, el equipo del IEP puede recomendar que se proporcionen servicios relacionados. Servicios relacionados se definen como "desarrollo, correctiva y otros servicios de apoyo" necesarios para ayudar a un estudiante para beneficiarse de la instrucción. Terapia Física (PT)

Terapia física hace resalta la función física y la independencia en diversos ámbientes, incluyendo aula, gimnasio, escalera, patio de recreo y las transiciones entre aulas. Estudiantes que funcionan por debajo de un nivel cognitivo puede que no esten listos para la terapia del habla/lenguaje como un servicio relacionado, pero más bien debería recibir estimulación del lenguaje durante seis meses como parte de su programa principal.

Otros Servicios de ApoyoAlgunos estudiantes pueden requerir "Otros servicios de apoyo" de un paraprofesional en el aula de educación general o en una clase especial para abordar las necesidades específicas relacionadas con el comportamiento, la salud, comunicación o visión. Escritura - Nuestro lema es “¡Escritores nunca dejan de escribir! ” Se espera que los niños dibujen primero, pongan etiqueta a sus dibujos, escriban oraciones, escriban párrafos y, finalmente, escriban narrativas. Los niños también escribirán a través de géneros múltiples para ampliar su repertorio (cartas, poesía, momentos persuasivos, informativos, pequeños, etc.). Matemáticas - los niños aprenden haciendo. En matemáticas, los profesores están refinando continuamente el currículo para desafiar a su niño a resolver los problemas de la vida real. Favor de asistir todas las mesas redondas mensuales que sean posibles para poder mantenerse informado de las estrategias de "matemáticas". Los niños todavía deben memorizar sus datos básicos (suma, resta, multiplicación y división) hasta el cuarto grado para desarrollar fluidez con resolución de problemas matemáticos. Juntos, los Forever Factors proporcionan un lente a través del cual podemos estudiar cualquier sociedad humana.

Dalcroze, gimnasia rítmica Dalcroze enseña conceptos de ritmo, estructura y expresión musical usando el movimiento. LENGUAJE DUALEntrada en un programa de lenguaje dual es un compromiso de varios años que implica a la familia así como al estudiante. Los estudiantes aprenden a ser multiculturales, bilingües y bi-alfabetizados. El lenguaje dual es una opción para las familias interesadas y para algunos de nuestros estudiantes. Participación en el programa es un compromiso de seis años y la decisión debe discutirse con la directora o con la maestra de su hijo/a. Queremos que todos nuestros estudiantes esten en un espacio donde puedan experimentar el mayor éxito posible.

¿Qué es un Programa de la Lenguaje Dual(DLP)?

Un programa bilingüe, donde los estudiantes aprenden en dos idiomas.

Un enfoque de instrucción para estudiantes de habla hispana para aumentar el nivel de Inglés y estudiantes de habla inglesa para aumentar la competencia en Español.

Los estudiantes aprenden en un aula, con 50% de la instrucción en Español y en Inglés un 50%.

Una oportunidad para que los alumnos utilizen su lengua materna para dominar un segundo idioma y nuevos contenidos (denominado "translanguaging.")

¿Cómo se diferencia la instrucción en un DLP?

Los estudiantes en el DLP reciben instrucción en la misma área de contenido y siguen las mismas unidades de estudio en todos los temas que otras clases en nuestra escuela.

Seguimos un modelo 50% / 50% en los grados K -2, donde los estudiantes tienen una maestra para todas las materias. Desde el 3er grado los estudiantes siguen un modelo de lado-a-lado, con estudiantes que cambian entre las aulas en 'Inglés' y en 'Español' alternando días, según un calendario. En todos los casos, la mitad del tiempo de instrucción diaria se lleva a cabo en Inglés, mitad en Español.

Los niños en un DLP también superan a los niños monolingües en los exámenes estandarizados, y están en una posición para obtener más oportunidades de carrera después de la universidad.
